Locking your iPhone’s SIM card adds yet another layer of security, meaning that even if someone can get into your phone, they still can’t use it to call, text, or access your data plan.

Locking a phone’s SIM card isn’t a new concept. It’s a basic security feature on pretty much all phones, including Android ones. After you enable it, your phone will ask for a special SIM PIN every time you start it up–without it, you won’t be able to make calls, text, and use the device’s data plan. A SIM card lock won’t prevent a thief from swapping out your old card for a new one but that’s okay, at least you know they can’t use your phone or your precious data.

With that in mind, we’re willing to bet that many users aren’t even aware they can lock their iPhone’s SIM card, so today we want to show you how.

To lock your iPhone’s SIM card, first open the Settings and tap “Phone”.

If these codes don’t work, you can either call your carrier or do some Googling. Just make sure you don’t try blindly guessing because if you don’t get it right in three attempts, your SIM card will be disabled.

Tapping “Unlock” will allow you to enter your SIM PIN.

Just be warned, you will get three tries to enter the correct SIM PIN, after which your SIM will be disabled and you will need to contact your carrier for a new one. Make sure you set up a PIN you can remember, but is difficult to guess.

Obviously, adding a SIM PIN gives you another layer of security. In addition to the lock you have on your screen, to actually access the device, you need to enter another code to be able to properly use it. For many, this can kind of peace of mind will let you breathe easier especially when a mobile phone is so easy to lose to or can be stolen.

To protect your SIM card from others using it for phone calls or cellular data, you can use a SIM PIN. Then, every time you restart your device or remove the SIM card, your SIM card will automatically lock and you’ll see “Locked SIM” in the status bar.

Turn your SIM PIN on or off

  1. If you have an iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular > SIM PIN. If you have an iPad, go to Settings > Mobile Data > SIM PIN.
  2. Turn on your SIM PIN or turn it off.
  3. If asked, enter your SIM PIN. If you’ve never used one, enter the default SIM PIN from your carrier. If you don’t know the default SIM PIN, don’t try to guess it. Check your carrier’s customer service page or the documents that came with your wireless plan. Or you can contact your carrier.
  4. Tap Done.

If you forgot or don’t know your SIM PIN

  1. Contact the carrier that gave you the SIM card. If you aren’t sure which carrier to call, remove your iPhone SIM card or iPad SIM card and check the card for the carrier’s name or logo.

All cellular phones, including your iPhone and cellular iPad, require a subscriber identity module (SIM) card in order to use cellular services on GSM and some CDMA networks. With the new Nano-SIM that phones currently use, a CDMA device can connect to GSM networks when roaming, which is useful if you travel a lot.

When you purchase a new iPhone 12 or iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular, the device should come with a SIM card for you to use with your chosen cellular provider. If you purchased it as an unlocked device, or if it did not come with a SIM card, you can usually buy one from a store that provides cellular service plans.

Usually, SIM cards can be transferred from device-to-device, so if your iPhone becomes unusable, you can just take the SIM card out of the tray and pop it into another device and still be able to make calls and send SMS.

But did you know that you can also set a SIM PIN with iOS 12 and later so that each time you restart your device or remove the SIM card, the SIM card is locked and unusable until you input the SIM PIN? This is done to prevent others from taking your SIM card and using it for phone calls or cellular data.

How to eject the SIM card tray on your iPhone

Should you ever need to switch devices or SIM cards, here’s how to take your existing one out:

  1. Insert a paper clip or SIM eject tool (older iPhones always came with these) into the small hole of the SIM card tray. This is found on the right side of your iPhone.
  2. Press the paper clip or SIM eject tool firmly into the hole.

The tray should now eject from the side, and you can remove it with your fingers.

  • Remove the old SIM card.
  • Place the new SIM card into the tray. The angled corner determines the proper orientation.
  • Insert the tray back into the iPhone until it’s flush with the side.
  • Protect your SIM card

SIM cards are a vital part of keeping us connected, and we don’t want them to fall into the wrong hands. Adding a SIM PIN is a great way to make sure that no one can take your SIM card and use it as their own, so it helps give you some peace of mind. Just make sure to remember that SIM PIN, because otherwise, you may lock yourself out of your own phone!

Secure iPhone: How to Set Up a SIM Card Lock? [2021]

SIM Card Lock is really important than you think. SIM cards are a popular way to classify phone users all over the world. They’re tiny plastic objects with embedded chips that inform mobile operators who you are and what you’re paying for. An eSim is a revamped and advanced version of a sim that requires a QR code to enable.

The one and only security feature of a SIM card that we can monitor, despite the fact that it is important to many of us, is its PIN code. It is an integral feature and could mitigate the risk of potential cybersecurity to an acceptable level. However, it can be backed with cell phone security measures.

Efani walks you through setting up a SIM Card Lock PIN to help avoid unauthorized access to your account details or use of your data plan.

How can I add an extra security layer to my iPhone?

A pre-emptive step would be to secure your SIM card with a lock. Sounds fancy, but this lesser-known feature goes long especially when the cyber threats landscape has grown.

For instance, if a bad actor “tries” to break into your phone (which is impossible with Efani, btw) this feature can save you from the hassle.

They cannot utilize your sim to call, text, or access your data plan. After you implement this feature (the steps will be shared in the next section), your phone will request a SIM PIN each time. A SIM card lock will not keep a criminal from trading out your old card for another one yet that is alright, in any event, you realize they cannot use your phone or your valuable information. Privacy matters and should be prioritized.

How to Set a Sim Card Lock on an iPhone?

It is common among iPhone users that they don’t know how to lock their iPhone’s, SIM Card. Don’t worry. We got you covered.

Follow these steps and you will be successful in locking your SIM Card.

Step 1: So, in order to put a SIM Card lock, open Settings and tap “Phone”.

Step 2: From there, tap on “SIM PIN” to get access to this feature.

Step 3: Tap on “SIM PIN” again to enable it.

Step 4: SIM comes with a default PIN code directly from your mobile carrier. These codes vary company by company but for Sprint and T-Mobile, it is 1234, and for AT&T and Verizon, you can try 1111. Don’t worry if these codes don’t work. You can either Google about these codes or call your carrier support and ask the codes. Please never keep trying wrong PINS, it could be problematic. If your attempts fail thrice, your SIM Card will be disabled.

Step 5: After you are successful with the default PIN, the security SIM Card Lock will be active. All you need is to change the default PIN to your preferred PIN because default is easiest to guess! Tap “Change PIN” to change.

Step 6: Now enter the default PIN in order to access the security and now you can enter your preferred New PIN, and confirm.

Step 7: Restart the phone. You will get a pop-up here that your SIM Card is locked. If you tap “OK”, your SIM will be temporarily unavailable until you unlock it again with the pop-up message. You will get it again once you try calling or messaging someone.

    Summary:

Settings> Phone> SIM PIN (refer to step 4)> Enter Default PIN> Change PIN> Restart Device

    Warning

Remember this very clearly that if you entered the SIM PIN incorrectly three times, your SIM will be deactivated and you will need to contact your carrier for a new SIM card. Set a PIN that is easier for you to remember to avoid this inconvenience, yet not too easy to be guessed by a criminal. Be artistic but in a unique way.

    Take-Home Message

Privacy and cybersecurity go hand-in-hand. You’re always responsible for your freedom from such culprits and you’ve to fight these bad actors by recognizing your role in the game of cyberwars! Smartphone users usually protect the data stored on their devices by setting up a biometric lock, PIN or passcode. But what about the data stored in SIM memory? What if someone takes out the SIM card and starts using it on another phone? Remember, it contains a lot more information other than just phone numbers. This includes billing information and transaction OTPs too come through SIM card.

Simply put, a smartphone’s lock screen does not lock the SIM card inside it or even setting up app lock or encrypting the entire smartphone or using the boot-time password on your smartphone does not protect the SIM card or its data.

Well, then how to protect the SIM card and the data stored on it. The answer is SIM PIN , which is also the only way that adds an additional layer of protection to the SIM. Once the SIM PIN lock is enabled, each time you’ll restart the smartphone or swap the SIM to some other smartphone, it will ask you to enter your SIM PIN and without the authentication, SIM card will not be accessible at all.

Do note that in case you forget your SIM PIN and you will need to call customer care. As it will ask for PUK (PIN Unlock Key) code to unlock the SIM.

A PUK code (Personal Unlocking Key) is a second level of security on your SIM card. It’s an eight-digit sequence of numbers unique to your SIM card.

Why do I need to know my PUK code?

There are a few reasons why you might want to know your PUK code:

    • You’re moving from one network service provider to another but want tokeep your number. If you’re moving to 2degrees, you will need the PUK code from your old provider. Whether you’re already with us and changing to a new 022 number or leaving us sadly, we can help you find your PUK code.
    • You’ve incorrectly entered the SIM PIN on your phone more than three times. If you have activated SIM Security on your phone, you’ll need to enter a PIN to unlock the SIM card each time you start your phone. This is different to the screen-lock PIN. If you incorrectly enter the SIM PIN more than three times, both SIM card and the phone will be locked. They can be unlocked by entering your PUK code.

How do I find my PUK code?

There are a few ways to locate the PUK code for your 2degrees SIM:

    • Log in to Your 2degrees (easiest) and click settings
    • If you’ve recently purchased your 2degrees SIM card, you’ll find the PUK code printed on the label of the packaging
    • Calling 200 and follow the prompts
    • Calling Customer Care

Find your PUK code via Your 2degrees

Follow these steps to find your PUK code using Your 2degrees.

    1. Log in to Your 2degrees
    2. Click the Settings tab
    3. Click View PUK
    4. Select the phone number which you need the PUK for
    5. You will then see your:
      • SIM number
      • PUK code

I’ve got my PUK code, how do I unlock my SIM?

If you’ve had to find your PUK code because you’d incorrectly entered the PIN code, enter the PUK code then input a new PIN for the SIM card.

    • Carefully enter the PUK code into your mobile phone. If you incorrectly enter your PUK code more than 10 times, your SIM will be permanently disabled.
    • Enter a new SIM PIN code – and write that number down somewhere safe and secure so you don’t need to do this again. Your phone should be unlocked, and you’ll be able to text, stream and scroll as per usual.

My phone says my PUK is blocked

Oh drat. If your phone is displaying a ‘PUK Blocked’ message, you’ve incorrectly entered your PUK code too many times and the SIM is now permanently disabled. It’s not a major problem, though, just pick up a new blank SIM and get a SIM swap done.

Almost everybody uses a passcode to secure their iPhones these days, but did you know that you can lock your SIM card with a PIN too? This further prevents other people from using your device by requiring a pin before the device can access a cellular network, including to make calls. If this sounds appealing to you, it is really not that hard to setup.

The passcode you use to unlock your iPhone protects all your valuable data stored on the device itself. However, the physical SIM card that’s installed on your iPhone can be taken out and accessed by anyone to make phone calls from any other phone. This can be prevented by using a SIM Lock. Consider this as sort of like two-factor authentication required to access your SIM card.

How to Set a SIM Pin on iPhone to Lock SIM Card

Before you get started with the following procedure, you’ll need to find out the default PIN for your SIM card since it’ll be required to enable this feature. The default SIM PIN varies depending on your network provider. For instance, if you’re on AT&T or Verizon, the default PIN is 1111.

Head over to “Settings” from the home screen of your iPhone.

In the settings menu, tap on “Cellular” located just below the Bluetooth option as shown in the screenshot below.

Next, you’ll find the “SIM PIN” option under Carrier Services in the Cellular settings menu. Tap on it to proceed.

Now, tap on the toggle to enable “SIM PIN”.

You’ll now be prompted to enter your default SIM PIN to lock your SIM card. Type in the four-digit PIN and tap on “Done” located at the top-right corner of the screen.

  • Now that you’ve locked the SIM, you’ll need to set a custom PIN. To do this, tap on “Change PIN”, type the current PIN which is the default PIN, and then enter your preferred PIN.
  • There you go. You’ve successfully managed to lock the SIM card that you’re using on your iPhone.

From now on, every time you reboot your iPhone or remove and install the SIM card on a different phone, you will be prompted to enter your SIM PIN before you’re allowed to connect to the cellular network.

Although you can lock an eSIM, this method is mostly for people who’re using physical SIM cards on their iPhones. In case if someone steals your iPhone, they won’t able to access your SIM card and make phone calls even if they install it on a different device. Also, if someone manages to breaks into your iPhone after guessing your passcode, the SIM Lock will serve as a second layer of protection.

If you forget your SIM PIN or enter the wrong PIN 10 times, the SIM card will be blocked and the only way to get back access to your network is by using the PUK (Personal Unblocking Key). It’s an 8-digit code that’s usually printed on the back of your SIM card’s packaging. In case you don’t have it, you’ll need to contact your network provider and verify with them that you’re the owner of the card.

Did you ever think to lock your SIM? You will be using Passcode/Touch ID/Face ID to keep your iPhone secure and prevent from unauthorized access. But never think about locking SIM with a passcode. Just like protecting your iPhone with Passcode, SIM Protection is also important to avoid any unauthorized use of your SIM (phone number). All the text messages and calls are may reach to the hand of an anonymous guy, if he can access your SIM.

We highly recommended to lock SIM with a PIN and let’s discuss how to protect your SIM with a strong PIN.

    Why Should I Lock SIM?

Now, let’s assume that your iPhone is lost or stolen by someone. Of course, the hacker will not be able to use your iPhone right away as it is locked. However, he/she can just take out your SIM card, put that on their device and start using immediately without any issues. How to avoid this? Another security threat for your SIM is the SIM Swap, using which the hackers can even steal money from your bank accounts. If you are using T-Mobile, you should have received a warning from T-Mobile about SIM Swap scams.

What is a SIM Lock Code (PIN)?

It is nothing but a combination of digits which can protect your SIM card from unauthorized access. If this feature is enabled, it will prevent a hacker or someone from using your SIM on any phone, as it will be locked immediately after it is taken out from your device.

For example, let’s assume that you have created a PIN for your SIM card on your iPhone. Let’s imagine that someone has stolen your device and tries to put your SIM card on an Android device. Do you think it will work? No. Irrespective of whatever device, a locked SIM can be unlocked only by entering the right PIN, or in a worst case scenario, by getting support from your carrier.

    Find Default SIM Lock PIN

Before you can start creating a new PIN for your SIM card, you need to find out the default PIN code for your SIM. How will you find that? Some carriers like Verizon provide a default SIM PIN which can be found by logging to your account page. Alternatively, if your carrier doesn’t provide a default PIN, then you can try entering 0000 or 1111.

Do remember that you have only 3 attempts to enter the right PIN. Otherwise, your SIM will be locked and you need to contact the carrier to get PUK (PIN Unlocking Key) to unlock your SIM card. You can do a search on Google to find the default PIN based on your carrier. If that doesn’t work out, contact your carrier via chat/email/phone to get the default. Don’t try your luck and get yourself into trouble by entering random values for the PIN.

Set Up SIM Lock on iPhone

Now, let’s see how to create a new PIN for your SIM card on your iPhone which involves two steps.

Step 1: Enter your default PIN

    1. Tap Settings->Mobile Data
    2. By default, the PIN is disabled. To enable that, tap the position of the switch titled SIM PIN to the right.
    3. Here, you will see a message like “Enter PIN to lock SIM, 3 attempts remaining”. If you are creating a PIN for the first time on your device, then you need to enter the default PIN for your SIM card. (You need to contact your mobile carrier to get that PIN)
    4. Next, enter the default PIN and tap Done button on the top right of the page. If you had entered the right PIN, the switch will be shown in Green color with its position toggled to the right.

    Step 2: Create New PIN

    1. Then, tap Change PIN located just below the PIN switch.
    2. Next, enter your Current PIN and tap Done button.
    3. Then, enter your New PIN and tap Done button.
    4. Next, enter your New PIN once again for confirmation and tap Done button.

That’s it. Now, you have successfully created a PIN for your SIM card to add an extra layer of protection. Don’t forget to store this PIN on a piece of paper so that you can refer that in case you had forgotten the PIN.

In case you would like to change the PIN later, you can just follow the 4 steps mentioned on the above section.

What happens after you set a PIN for your SIM card?

Once you have enabled the PIN for your SIM card, your SIM will get locked whenever you restart the device or remove your SIM card. And, you will see the message “SIM is locked” with a text box. To unlock your SIM card, enter the correct PIN and tap OK button. Now, your SIM is unlocked and the iOS will not ask you to enter the PIN till your device is restarted.

If you had entered a wrong PIN for three times, then your SIM will get locked. To unlock your SIM card, you need to contact your carrier and get the PUK for your SIM.

    Disable SIM PIN on iPhone

Are you finding it difficult to remember and enter the right PIN every time your device is restarted? Then, you can turn off that feature completely so that your iOS will not ask for PIN anymore.

    1. Tap Settings->Mobile Data.
    2. Tap the position of the switch SIM PIN to the left, to turn off the feature.
    3. Now, your screen will prompt to enter the current PIN for your SIM card. After entering that, tap Done button on the top right of the screen.

Now, the extra protection for your SIM card has been disabled successfully.

    Forgot your SIM PIN?

Unfortunately, there is no option to reset or recover the PIN for your SIM card, in case you had forgotten the same. The only thing you can do is to contact your mobile carrier, get the PUK key or default PIN to unlock your SIM card.

Have you protected SIM with a PIN? If not, we highly recommend you to lock your SIM right away. Just you need to make sure that you remember the PIN or note down somewhere so that you will not be locked out from using your own phone.

If you have a SIM card PIN enabled on your phone to access data on the SIM card, but you repeatedly enter it incorrectly, the SIM card may lock you out from further attempts. You can reset the SIM card, using what’s called a personal unlock code, or PUK code, which you can usually obtain from your phone carrier.

    Locking a SIM Card

You can set a SIM PIN code to prevent people from accessing data such as contacts stored on the SIM card without your permission, even if they physically have your phone and then steal the card. This is separate from a passcode or a biometric lock you might set on the phone itself, since it’s designed to protect the data on the SIM, not the phone.

On an Android phone, you can set a SIM PIN, using the Settings menu. Tap the Settings app on your home screen, then tap to go to the “Security” or “Fingerprints and Security” submenu. Tap “Set up SM Card Lock” and select “Lock SIM Card” to lock the card. Generally, you’ll have to enter the existing default SIM lock PIN, which you can obtain from your phone maker or carrier, although you can change it afterward, through the same menu.

On an iPhone, tap “Settings,” then “Phone,” then “SIM PIN” to turn the lock PIN on or off. If you don’t know the existing PIN, contact your carrier for help.

    Getting a PUK Code

If you enter the wrong SIM card PIN repeatedly, your SIM card will lock as an added security measure. This prevents someone from simply guessing every possible PIN to access your data if they steal your phone or SIM card.

Once the SIM card is locked, you will need to use a separate code called a PUK code to unlock it. Your carrier can provide you with the PUK code for your SIM card. You can sometimes find this on your carrier’s website after you log in, and you can usually also obtain it by calling customer service or taking the phone to a carrier store. Once you have the PUK code, you can enter it and reset your SIM PIN to one you know.

If you don’t know the SIM card’s PUK code, don’t try to guess it. The SIM card can become permanently locked and need to be replaced, potentially losing your data, if you repeatedly enter an incorrect PUK code.

How to set up sim card lock for a more secure iphone

How to set up sim card lock for a more secure iphone

    iPhone SIM Locked pop up.

SIM Lock is an additional layer of security that you can use, along with the classic iOS Passcode and more recent Touch ID sensor. Every smartphone needs a SIM card in order to be able to connect to the carrier and receive an allotted phone number. Each SIM has its own Passcode, called PIN code. Whenever you buy a new SIM Card, it comes with a default PIN code, used for activating it.

    How To Enable/Disable SIM Lock
How to set up sim card lock for a more secure iphone You can opt that your iPhone requests the PIN code whenever it’s rebooted, or not. Failing to provide the 4-digit string results in a temporary Sim Lock, which can be lifted by entering the SIM card’s PIN. This might prove itself annoying. However, if you type the wrong PIN more than 3 times, your SIM card is permanently locked and can be recovered only with the PUK code.

You can remove PIN code requests by disabling SIM Lock from the Settings app. However, this espouses your SIM cards info in case of thefts. If an unauthorized person gets his hand your iPhone and extracts the SIM card, you might experience a data leak, because the SIM can be used with another smarptohne, if SIM lock isn’t available.
Fact: To teak this feature On/Off please browse to: Settings -> Phone Cellular (or Mobile Data) -> SIM PIN. Tweak the toggle next to SIM PIN to activate or deactivate this security element.

How To Unlock iPhone SIM Card
How to set up sim card lock for a more secure iphone If the SIM card security setting is active, you’re asked to insert the PIN code whenever the iPhone restarts. If you fail to do so, the SIM locks, and you aren’t able to receive or dial Cellular data calls or send messages. Your iPhone can remain connected to the web as long as you’re in the range oft a Wi-Fi hotspot. This means that you can use FaceTime and iMessage.

To Unlock the SIM card, open the Phone app and tap on the Recents tab, available in the bottom-left area of the screen. The SIM Locked pop up will show up on your screen to notify you that you aren’t able to dial calls, until you don’t type the 4-digit PIN code. Enter it and you’re iPhone unlocks!
How to set up sim card lock for a more secure iphone Fact: Be careful what security code you use! You have only 3 attempts. If you fail to enter the correct PIN, your SIM will lock permanently and can only be unlocked with the help of the PUK (PIN Unlock Code).

Tip: All SIM cards come with Default PIN codes. The most common 4-digit combinations are: “0000” or “1234”. If you want to use the SIM lock, I strongly recommend you to modify the default password and keep your iPhone safe.

How To Change SIM card PIN
Grab your iPhone and open the same Settings app. Tap Phone and scroll for SIM PIN. Next, hit Change PIN. You’re asked to type the current code. Once confirmed, you can proceed with adding your new SIM security code. Confirm it by entering it for a second time and you’re ready to go!

    2. Update Your Software

Enable auto updates for your operating system. These updates often include critical patches and protections against security threats. Make sure your apps also auto-update.

    Back it up

If you’re going to upgrade, sell, give away, or recycle your phone, the first thing you should do is back up your data.

    Remove SIM and SD cards

If your phone has a SIM card, it may store your personal information. Remove the SIM card. If you’re going to keep the same phone number, you may be able to transfer your SIM card to your new phone. If you’re not going to re-use the SIM card, destroy it.

If your phone has an SD memory card for storage, remove it.

    Erase your personal information

    Disconnect from accounts and devices

After you erase the information on your phone, make sure you’ve disconnected it from devices and accounts.

    • Confirm that your account or Wi-Fi passwords aren’t still stored on the phone.
    • Check that your phone isn’t paired with other devices, like a watch or a vehicle.
    • If you use you 2-step verification or multi-factor authentication to log in to any accounts, remove your phone from the list of trusted devices.
    • If you’re not keeping your phone number, change the number on file with any accounts or services that may be using it to identify you.

    Recycling Your Phone

How to set up sim card lock for a more secure iphone

Smartphone lock screens do not shield your SIM card, thus follow this step by step guide to enhance your SIM-security settings and protect your smartphone from defaulters.

How to set up sim card lock for a more secure iphone

    Key Highlights

    • Smartphone lock screens do not protect the data stored on your SIM card.
    • You can create a lock PIN for your SIM card to protect the data stored on it.
    • After you set your SIM PIN, make sure you remember the same because every time you restart your smartphone, you will be asked to enter the same.

There are various ways for you to protect the data on your phone. The lock system varies from pattern locks to codes to fingerprints etc. You can use the security and privacy locking system built-in your smartphone or you can install any third-party app to do the same.

Now many of us use these third-party apps or biometrics patterns to protect someone from accessing information and data inside our phone. What we usually forget is that in case a person wants to access our data, they can simply remove the SIM card and have access to our data plan, our billing information, the contacts that are saved and most importantly the OTPs that we receive on that SIM number. Thus it is important to keep the SIM also protected as password lock or file encryption system only protects the information inside your smartphone.

In case you want to add an additional layer of protection for the data stored on your SIM card, you can set up a SIM PIN for the same. Thus every time you restart your device or put your SIM in another device, you will be asked to add the SIM PIN; failure to do so will make your SIM inaccessible to you.
