How does Apple Watch Sleep tracking work?
The Apple Watch Sleep app integrates with the Sleep feature in the Health App and the Apple Watch app for iPhone.
If you wear your Apple Watch to bed and turn on sleep mode, the Sleep app will track your sleep duration, which includes the average time you spend in bed and the average time you spend asleep.
Quick tip: With the watchOS 8 update, your Apple Watch also tracks your breathing rate (also known as respiratory rate) while you sleep.
One of the main features of the Sleep app is bedtime schedules, which can help you achieve your sleep goals during the week and even on weekends.
Once you set a schedule, your Apple Watch will gather data during these time frames. You can set multiple sleep schedules, which is helpful if your sleep habits differ throughout the week.
How Sleep helps you attain sleep goals
When creating sleep schedules, you can set a sleep goal (for the number of hours you want to sleep), the time you want to go to bed and wake up, an alarm tone to wake you up in the morning, and when to turn on sleep mode.
When it’s almost time for bed, the Sleep app will activate Wind Down, a feature that turns on sleep mode. Sleep mode turns off your Apple Watch display and turns on Do Not Disturb, which silences your notifications, in an effort to reduce distractions before bedtime.
Note: Alarms in the Clock app will automatically be set to match the sleep schedule you set.
Where to set up and change Sleep tracking
Here’s a guide of what you can do to track sleep in the apps on your Apple Watch and iPhone:
How to set up Apple Watch Sleep tracking
1. Open the Health app on iPhone. Tap Browse on the bottom-right of the screen, then Sleep.
2. Under Set Up Sleep, tap Get Started.
3. Tap Next. Use the plus and minus buttons to set a sleep goal, then tap Next.
4. Use the circular slider to set a sleep schedule. Tap the weekdays you want the schedule to apply to, then tap Add.
5. Tap Add Schedule to add another sleep schedule. When you’re finished, tap Next.
6. Follow the on-screen prompts to enable or skip Sleep app features like Sleep Screen (simplifies your lock screen to reduce distractions before bedtime), Wind Down, and enabling sleep tracking. When you’re finished, tap Done.
How to view Sleep history
To see the sleep data that your Apple Watch collected, open the Health app on iPhone and tap Sleep in the Summary tab or Browse tab.
Here, you’ll find metrics on the amount of time you spent in bed and the amount of time you were asleep for each night, with graphs displaying trends over the week, month, and even six months.
Third-party sleep tracking apps
Apple’s built-in Sleep app is free and convenient to use, but as far as sleep data goes it’s fairly limited. Below are some notable third-party sleep tracking apps on the market.
- AutoSleep ($4.99): For a one-time charge of $4.99, you get access to all of the features on AutoSleep. The app analyzes your sleep quality based on measurements it takes on the amount of time you’re asleep, restlessness, the amount of time you’re awake, and your heart rate.
- Sleep++ (Free, with in-app purchases): This sleep tracker has an automatic mode and a manual mode. For the manual mode, you can tell the app when you start sleeping and when you wake up to more precisely control when data is being collected.
- Sleep Cycle (Free, $29.99/year for a premium subscription): Sleep Cycle has a smart alarm clock that gently wakes you up when you’re in a light sleep phase. It detects things like snoring, sleep talking, coughing, and other things that can decrease your quality of sleep. Premium features include relaxing sleep sounds and a story library. Since Sleep Cycle uses sound analysis, you don’t even need to wear your Apple Watch to bed.
- SleepWatch (Free, $3.99/month or $29.99/year for a premium membership): This sleep tracking app measures total sleep time, total restful sleep time, average sleeping heart rate, sleep rhythm, sleep disruptions, and more. It uses AI to offer personalized insights to help you get a better night’s sleep. Premium membership unlocks features like an advanced tracking mode, which estimates the time it takes you to fall asleep each night.
Sleep tracking is natively enabled on all Apple Watches Series 3 and later. It is an automatic function that tracks the data when you lie down while wearing the smart watch, but you must configure it. We show you how to set up sleep tracking on your Apple Watch.
Even though you can set up sleep tracking on your Apple Watch, it is much easier to do it on your iPhone. First, make sure your iPhone is running iOS 14 the superior, and your Apple Watch is running watchOS 7 the superior. Opposite case, sleep tracking settings will not be available.

– Now you can track your sleep with the watchOS 7 update
(Pocket-lint) – In the latest watchOS 7 update Apple enables you to track sleep using the Apple Watch. watchOS 7 works with Apple Watch Series 3, 4, 5 and the new Apple Watch Series 6 we’re expecting. It isn’t compatible with Series 1 or 2.
Sleep tracking has been a much-wanted feature for the Apple Watch and has been available previously in third-party apps.
Now though, there is a Sleep app on the watch and it uses motion to detect your sleep time. You obviously need to be wearing your Apple Watch to track your sleep, so you’ll need to change your charging behaviour and juice up in the day. If you don’t, you’ll end up with no charge at 10am the next morning.
The good thing about Apple Watch sleep tracking is that it is set-and-forget, so your sleep will be tracked without you having to do anything. But it’s fully configurable as you’ll see.
How Apple Watch Sleep tracking works
Apple’s sleep tracking integrates with the existing Bedtime feature on the iPhone’s Clock app (that feature is now called Sleep), so you turn it on and create a schedule.
Before your allocated bedtime you’ll be ‘prepared’ for sleep with a wind-down time (we’ve set it for 45 minutes here) while your Apple Watch becomes dimmed and locked – your Watch is now in ‘Sleep Mode’.
Do Not Disturb is automatically turned on but you can disable this either when you set up Sleep or afterwards.
You can also choose whether or not to have charging reminders – the watch will warn you within an hour of bedtime if you have less than 30 percent charge.
If you have a Series 4 or 5 you’ll almost certainly be OK to go through the night if you charged for a bit during the day at some point. With Series 3, you will need to fully charge in the day to last the night.
In Sleep Mode, you need to turn the digital crown to unlock the watch just as you do when you step out of water after swimming. We actually find this a bit irritating when we need to get up in the night and use the torch, for example.
You can disable Sleep Mode if you want, but this won’t track sleep. You can also opt out of sleep tracking entirely, even if you have Sleep Mode enabled.
You can access Sleep options and tracking in various places, which is somewhat confusing at first but does make sense because it ties several things together. So:
- You can set up and configure Sleep in the Sleep app on your Apple Watch, the Health app on iPhone and the Sleep section of the Apple Watch app on iPhone).
- You can edit all Sleep Settings in the Sleep section of the Apple Watch app on iPhone or the Health app on iPhone.
- You can edit the Sleep schedule and alarm on Apple Watch as well as in the Clock app on iPhone.
The results you get
Apple’s sleep tracking concentrates on the amount of time spent in bed and as such its a little less nuanced than some sleep tracking like Fitbit’s – or Jawbone’s excellent sleep tracking if you used that in the distant past. It’ll know you’re not asleep if you’re awake in bed and on your iPhone.
If you want to look at the results of your sleep, go to Browse > Sleep in the Health app. You can then tap any of the options at the bottom to see graphics that reflect that goal or result. You can also broaden out the graph to view a month at a time.
You can zone in on a particular day’s result and find out more details – although this will only give you time in bed and time asleep which appear at the top of the screen above the column in question along with the date.
How to set up sleep tracking on Apple Watch
1. Ensure your Apple Watch is on watchOS 7 or later and your iPhone is running iOS 14 or later.
2. In the Health app on your iPhone, set up Sleep. You can also go through this process on the Apple Watch itself in the Sleep app.
3. Firstly, choose the duration of sleep – this is a Sleep goal but it isn’t tracked in the iPhone Activity app like your rings (you can view it in the Health app on iPhone). We’ve chosen eight hours.
4. Next, you set when bedtime begins and when you need to wake up. There are actually a bunch of options here, so go through them carefully. Do you need to set it for every day, or just weekdays.
5. You’ll need to set a relaxation time before you go to bed – you can also choose to link this to a Siri Shortcut to do other automation such as turning off a light at home, for example. Wind Down can also be linked to a music playlist, for example.
6. You can decide whether or not to set an alarm and how you want it to sound. Note that this won’t replace your existing alarms on Apple Watch (or your iPhone – you need to turn those off manually).
Your alarm will sound on your iPhone if you don’t have your Apple Watch on and on your Watch if you do have it on. You can fully configure the alarm sound as well. If your Watch is set to silent, it will just vibrate.
7. You can see your sleep patterns in the Health app on iPhone – view by week or month. You can definitely see the gaps in my sleep here. As you can see, a small child is not conducive to meeting your sleep goal!

Interestingly, sleep tracking was only introduced natively to the Apple Watch with watchOS 7 last year. Apple has pioneered a number of features on the Watch but it was relatively late to the sleep tracking game, with a number of other sleep tracking apps for the Apple Watch having picked up the slack. However, when functionality arrived, it used the Apple Watch’s high-quality accelerometer to detect micro-movements during sleep, including respiration. This means it can offer a good sleep tracking solution.
The Sleep app on the Apple Watch allows users to capture when they go to sleep and wake up as well as how much sleep they get during the night. This is tracked over time to show users their weekly sleep trends. This information, in turn, can be used to help users set sleep goals and schedules, functionalities that are also offered by the Apple Watch.
Setting Up Apple Watch Sleep Tracking
To begin with, users just need to open the Sleep app, which is represented by a bed icon. Once in the app, they can set up their preferred bedtime and wake-up time, with the option of setting an alarm for the latter. Tapping ‘Full Schedule’ then allows users to add a new sleep schedule or change an existing one by setting a sleep goal for the desired amount of sleep and setting the amount of ‘Wind Down’ time in which the Apple Watch goes into sleep mode by turning off its display and enabling Do Not Disturb mode. Schedules can be set for particular days and adjusted when required. Sleep history can be viewed by scrolling down from the home screen of the app, with the previous night’s sleep shown and an average over the past 14 days.
There are a number of settings that can be adjusted to do with sleep tracking on the iPhone, including whether or not the time is shown when the Apple Watch is in sleep mode, whether and when charging reminders should be given to ensure the Watch is adequately for sleep tracking, and whether to wake up to an alarm or haptic taps. These and more can be accessed via the Settings app of the Apple Watch. There is also a version of the Sleep app for the iPhone to which a user’s sleep data can be synced, as well as a Night Shift feature that reduces blue light.

You’ll need to set what time you want to wake up and go to bed, set if you want an alarm, and what sound that alarm will make, and you’ll need to set up if you want sleep tracking and Wind Down enabled. - Launch the Sleep app on your Apple Watch.
- Tap Next. You’ll need to scroll down to the bottom of the screen.

How to turn off your sleep schedule on Apple Watch in watchOS 7
Sometimes you may not want to use the sleep schedule or sleep tracking abilities of the Apple Watch — like on vacation — so you’ll want to turn off your sleep schedule so it shuts the whole thing down.
- Launch the Sleep app on your Apple Watch.
- Tap Full Schedule.
Tap the Sleep Schedule On/Off switch. When the switch is gray, your sleep schedule will be disabled.

Apple finally added the long-awaited sleep-tracking feature to Apple Watch with WatchOS 7. It’s pretty simple to use, too. Just set a bedtime and wake-up time, and the Apple Watch will help you get a good night’s rest. We all know sleep hygiene is important, and the Wind Down feature helps to minimize distractions before bedtime, such as switching your iPhone to Do Not Disturb and changing the lock screen to a less-distracting interface. As soon as it’s your scheduled bedtime, the Apple Watch starts automatically tracking sleep. Make sure your watch is set to a comfortable fit — if it’s too loose on your wrist, it may register too much movement during the night.
Your sleep data tracked through the Apple Watch integrates with the Apple Health app, and through the app, you can see statistics based on how much shut-eye you’re getting and receive tips for better sleep. Each morning when you wake up, your Apple Watch provides you with a summary of your night’s sleep — as well as a battery indicator to remind you to charge your device.
Think about the battery
Here’s where sleep tracking with the Apple Watch falls down somewhat. The battery needs charging on a daily basis, so there won’t be any time for that if you’re wearing it all day and night. Of course, you could set aside a different time to charge your Watch, if that works for your schedule. If you don’t want to wear your Watch in bed, or if you have an older device, you could use a third-party sleep-tracking app. Bear in mind that some apps may require you to have your iPhone on the bed with you, which is also an undesirable (and probably quite unsafe) place to charge it.
Sleep tracking using the iPhone is possible, but it comes with many compromises.
There are plenty of third-party sleep-tracking options available from the App Store. Most of these apps require your iPhone to be used in addition to your Apple Watch. Here are four options to consider trying out.
There is no absolute requirement to wear your Apple Watch in bed with the AutoSleep app. If you do, it uses the Watch’s sensors to establish when you sleep and will then monitor movement and heart rate to provide a sleep score in the morning. If you decide not to wear the Watch while sleeping, the app operates using your iPhone and will only record the amount of time you sleep.
The app costs $4, has consistently good ratings in the App Store, and is one of the most popular sleep-tracking apps to download. However, to provide meaningful metrics, you’ll have to wear your Apple Watch and find another time to charge it — so, if you have a Series 3 Watch or later, you may as well use the built-in sleep-tracking feature.
Pillow also uses your iPhone and Apple Watch together to track sleep. If you decide not to wear your Watch to bed, you have to put your iPhone on the bed with you. This way, it can more effectively monitor nightly activities, including snoring and REM sleep. Pillow also makes use of the phone’s microphone to record noises during the night. If you wear the Watch, heart-rate tracking is introduced. There’s even a Sleep Aid feature that lets you listen to your favorite tracks from Apple Music or your local iTunes library to help you drift off, as well as a library of meditations, sleep stories, and soundscapes designed to make it easier to unwind and sleep soundly.
Some features require an in-app purchase to unlock, and a subscription starts from $7 per month — but many of the features are free, and there is a smart alarm clock, too, ready to wake you up at exactly the right time for your body. Just remember not to charge your phone while it’s in bed with you.
Promoted as a smart alarm clock, Sleepzy also tracks sleep if you wear the Apple Watch. It sets goals to meet with sleeping time, will monitor sleep patterns, and provides white noise and sounds to help you fall asleep. There is a subscription package that starts at $7 per month, and it’s needed to remove ads and to introduce features like data monitoring over time. Using the iPhone works like other sleep apps and records sounds, measures sleep quality, and provides feedback on how to sleep better.
Sleep Watch is another app that can use both your iPhone and the Apple Watch to monitor sleep. If you wear the Watch to bed, it’ll automatically start tracking when you fall asleep and has a comprehensive list of features onboard. I first wrote about this a couple years back, and in light of the above news, this seemed the ideal time for an update. If nothing else, now you know that you needn’t hinge any Apple Watch purchase or upgrade plans on sleep-tracking alone.
It all started when I was feeling unusually tired, which led me to ask my doctor what might be causing it. His first question: “Are you getting enough sleep?” Why, of course I’m getting enough. hmm, wait a second, am I?

There’s a related question: Am I getting good sleep? Well, I have an Apple Watch, and it can track my steps, heart rate, time spent standing and all that — so maybe I’ll just start wearing it to bed and get some answers.
You know the punchline: The Apple Watch still doesn’t do sleep-tracking, at least not out of the box. But there are many third-party apps that can fill in this gap, keeping tabs on how long you sleep and how well.
Sleep-tracking considerations: Bulk, brightness and battery
Before we dive into the apps, let’s look at a few key considerations. The first is that you’ll need to wear your watch to bed, which can pose a couple problems. Never mind that it’s a little uncomfortable until you get used to it, there’s also the matter of the watch face lighting up when you make any upward arm movements. And if you think that face isn’t bright when it’s pitch-black, think again.
The fix: Turn off the Wake Screen on Wrist Raise feature, which you can do by swiping up on your watch face and enabling Theater Mode. This disables raise-to-wake as well as notifications.
Put your Apple Watch into Theater Mode before you go to sleep.
A little tougher to manage is the battery issue. My watch usually has only about 30-40% remaining at the end of the day. If I don’t top it off, I’ll wake up with very little power left — not nearly enough to get me through the day.
The fix: When you wake up in the morning, toss the watch on the charger while you shower, eat breakfast and so on. After 30 minutes or so, it should have enough juice for the next 24 hours. Alternately, consider charging it while you’re getting ready for bed, reading or whatever. The only catch is you have to remember to put it back on before nodding off.

Another perk: a “smart” alarm can wake you up when the app detects you’re in a light sleep phase, as opposed to your bedside alarm that might wrestle you from a deep slumber — and leave you feeling groggy and angry. (No? Just me?)
Bodymatter’s Sleep Watch wins the “most improved” award, not only because it now does a much better job presenting sleep data, but also because it’s now free. (It previously cost $5.)
Well, “freemium”: If you want access to premium features, there’s a $2.99-per-month subscription option. Thankfully, you don’t need that to squeeze plenty of helpful sleep data from the app. It measures not only total sleep time, but also restful sleep time, sleep rhythm, sleep disruptions, heart rate and more.

We would also like to note that watchOS 7 is available on an Apple Watch Series 3 and later and also requires an iPhone 6s running iOS 14. Therefore, this feature should work on devices released in 2015 and later.
Set Up Sleep Tracking on Your iPhone and Apple Watch
Sleep tracking in iOS 14 works best when you pair your smartphone with an Apple Watch. However, to start this process, you need to turn to the Health app on your iPhone.
1. Launch the Health app and make sure to tap on the “Browse” tab (bottom-right corner). Scroll down and tap on “Sleep.” Again, scroll down a bit and tap on “Get Started” (found within the “Set Up Sleep” card).
2. Your iPhone will now show you a quick overview of how sleep tracking works. Feel free to tap on “Next” to proceed to the first step. This is where you’ll need to set up your sleep goal. By tapping on the plus and minus icons, set the desired time interval. Tap “Next.”
3. This is where you can set up your first schedule. Start by selecting (or deselecting) days that you’ll include in your schedule. For example, if you have the same schedule from Monday through Friday, make sure to select those days only. Later on, you can create a weekend schedule, for example.
4. Depending on the sleep goal you’ve previously chosen, your iPhone will show you a recommended bedtime and wake-up time. Feel free to adjust this time interval by dragging either the bed or alarm icon. Lastly, tap “Add” once you’re happy with your schedule.
5. You are now free to tap “Next” to continue or add another schedule by tapping on “Add a Schedule for Other Days.”
6. At this moment, you’ll see a prompt to enable the recently introduced “Sleep Mode.” This mode allows you to eliminate notifications or other distractions, letting you relax and begin your bedtime routine. You’re free to choose whether you’d like to use this mode or whether you don’t want to make any modifications. To proceed, tap on “Enable Sleep Mode.” If you’d like to skip this feature, tap on “Skip.”
7. If you’ve chosen to set up your own “Sleep Mode,” you’ll see prompts to edit a “Wind Down” time which enables the “Do Not Disturb” mode. You’ll need to set the duration of this interval, which will begin before your previously set bedtime interval. Use the plus and minus icons, then tap on “Enable Wind Down.” Of course, you can skip this step by tapping on “Skip.”
8. You can decide whether you’d like to access particular functions of your iPhone while the “Sleep Mode” is active (done via “Wind Down Shortcuts”). You can enable this feature by tapping on “Set Up Shortcuts -> Add a Shortcut,” then choosing any shortcut(s) you see on your screen. Tap Next once you’re done.
9. At this moment, you’ll see a message saying that you can use your Apple Watch to track your sleep. Therefore, to get the most precise results, make sure to charge your Apple Watch on time and wear it while sleeping. To enable this option, tap on “Enable.” There’s no need to adjust anything else, as your Apple Watch will now start to track your sleep automatically.
10. Finally, review your schedule and make sure everything is set correctly. You can always go back to the previous steps if there’s something you want to adjust. To finalize this procedure, tap on “Done.”

3] Get your Sleep Summary
Open the Sleep app for Apple Watch and scroll down to get the summary of your sleep time along with the number of times you woke up.

How to Set Up Apple Watch Sleep Tracking

Later, you can edit your wake schedule and settings by returning to the Health app, or you can do it on the Apple Watch:
On your watch, press the Digital Crown and tap Sleep from the list of apps.

How Apple Watch Sleep Tracking Works
Once you have set up your sleep schedule, your Apple Watch and iPhone work together to track your sleep and help you wake.
Depending upon which watch model you own, you might need to charge it in the evening to get through the night. If you have turned on Charging Reminders in the Sleep section of the Watch app, you’ll get a reminder on your watch to charge it if the battery level is too low to make it through the night.
If you have a Series 3, you will probably need to ensure your watch is close to fully charged, while the Series 4 or higher should have no trouble making it to morning with as little as 30 percent battery at bedtime.
Here is what else you can expect from sleep tracking:
Shortly before your specified bedtime, Wind Down will begin. Wind Down turns on Do Not Disturb mode and displays the Good Evening wind down screen on your iPhone which hides most iPhone features. To start any shortcuts you have specified for the window down period, tap Shortcuts to see a pop-up window with the shortcuts you specified.
At bedtime, your watch’s display will go dark, both to minimize distractions and conserve battery. You can tap the display to see the time, or spin the digital crown to unlock the display and temporarily return it to normal. After you stop using the display, it will go dark again until morning.
At the same time, your iPhone display will change to its Sleep Well page, which hides most iPhone features (though you can still launch your Wind Down shortcuts).
When morning comes, your watch will vibrate to wake you and your selected wake up alarm will sound. You can tap Snooze or turn the alarm off either from the iPhone’s screen or from your Apple Watch.
On your phone, you will see a welcome screen you can dismiss to use your phone normally.

While devices like the Garmin Venu 2 use movement, heart rate, and heart rate variability — the time between each heartbeat — to distinguish REM sleep from non-REM sleep, the Apple Sleep app does not offer any breakdown of how much time you spend in each sleep stage (light, deep or REM). Many other wearables on the market also include sleep stage tracking, so we hope Apple adds this feature to future releases.
Are you tossing and turning all night long or clocking real, restorative rest? Many wearables, including newer devices from Fitbit, provide a daily sleep score, summarizing your sleep in a helpful and actionable way. Who doesn’t find motivation in a grading system? Without tracking sleep stages, the Sleep app can’t offer this level of insight or data interpretation.
The Apple Watch can’t diagnose sleep conditions, so you’ll still need to visit the doctor if you notice anything off. The Withings ScanWatch is one of only a few wearables that can detect signs of sleep apnea or any serious AFib with a medical-grade ECG and pulse oximeter. Your Apple Watch might be able to clue you into some irregularities, but it’s not approved as a medical device.

The Apple Watch Series 4 is a fantastic upgrade to Apple’s wrist-wearable accessory, but it’s still missing a key competitive feature: sleep tracking. Each year, we hope the new version of watchOS will add integrated sleep tracking, and each year we’re disappointed.
Fortunately, a number of third-party applications pick up the slack. After trying quite a few, we think the best two are AutoSleep and Pillow. They’re reliable, attractive, informative, and best of all, they track sleep automatically. All you need to do is wear your Apple Watch to bed.
AutoSleep’s primary purpose is right there in the name: automatic sleep tracking. It’s made exclusively for your Apple Watch, and it really doesn’t work at all without it.
Just wear your Apple Watch while you sleep—you’ll probably want to enable Theater Mode to keep it from lighting up—and you’ll get a notification with your sleep report the following day.
If you want to charge your Watch overnight, just put it on the charger right when you go to bed and stop charging it immediately when you wake up. AutoSleep will use the charge time as a proxy for sleep time, but you won’t get any details about your quality of sleep or heart rate.
The AutoSleep app interface is a little confusing at first, but is full of useful data.
The interface is a little hard to figure out thanks to excessive mimicry of Apple’s activity rings, but you’ll find a lot of great information once you poke around.
You’ll get information on when you went to sleep and when you woke up, total sleep time, amount of time spent in deep sleep, how much “quality” sleep you got, and your heart rate.

AutoSleep’s Watch interface is clear, but doesn’t quite look like a standard Apple Watch app.
Setup requires completing a wizard that asks about your sleep habits, including the time at which you want to start recording a new day’s sleep. After all, you don’t want to go to bed at 10 p.m., sleep for eight hours, then have the app count the first two hours of sleep on one day and the next six hours on the next.
I found that I had to fiddle with the sleep tracking sensitivity a bit to get readings that I thought were accurate, but that’s easy enough to do. You get five settings from “Very Still” to “Very Restless,” and one of them is bound to match your average sleep activity level.
AutoSleep provides a nice watch complication that supports the new Series 4 watch faces (including corner complications), but it does not support the new large center complication on the Infograph Modular face. The watch app itself is clear and easy to read, and the rings interface makes a little more sense there. There’s even a handy “Lights off” button that works with HomeKit-enabled lights.
It’s a good deal at $2.99, and for a long time was my favorite sleep tracking app for Apple Watch.
AutoSleep’s top spot has been slightly edged out by Pillow, thanks to a few features added in recent updates. Pillow is made to track sleep for anyone with an iPhone—by placing it on your mattress, an iffy proposition if you share a bed—but we’ll focus on its Apple Watch functionality here.
Pillow’s main interface shows a couple of sleep activity rings, followed by a simplified chart of your last night’s sleep. Tap that chart and you get more detailed info, including your total time asleep and a measurement of your sleep quality. You can see what percentage of your sleep time was spent awake, in light sleep, in REM sleep, and in deep sleep.
Pillow’s app interface is more friendly than AutoSleep’s, but it doesn’t provide as much data.
Turning your phone sideways to landscape orientation changes the view to show detailed information about a bunch of your sleep data over time. It’s all presented in simple and clear vertical bar charts.
Pillow’s got a few other handy features, too. It will record noises at night while you sleep, and you can listen to them later in order to see if you’ve been snoring or if it was the cat that woke you up. It can suggest times to go to bed based on your sleep stats to make sure you get enough quality sleep, and play sounds that might help you fall asleep. It has an alarm mode that will wake you up during the most opportune part of your sleep cycle before you have to get up.
Some of these features don’t work when you’re using the Apple Watch’s auto-detection mode, which is a shame. But even without them, it is more or less a feature-for-feature match for AutoSleep.
Pillow’s Watch app looks almost like something Apple would make.
The Watch app does a little bit better job than AutoSleep of matching the aesthetic of Apple’s own watch apps. A recent update also added support for the whole range of Series 4 complications, including corner complications for the Infograph face and the large center graph on the Infograph Modular face.
Pillow is technically free, but it’s really not of much use without the $4.99 in-app purchase. Without that, you get a very limited sleep history, which really defeats the purpose of knowing if you got a better night’s sleep than usual.
Which app is best?
AutoSleep and Pillow are both excellent choices. Neither one is free (Pillow’s in-app purchase is all but required), but neither is expensive. Perhaps most importantly, both AutoSleep and Pillow are one-time purchases; in this age of subscription-based apps, it’s nice to just buy something and own it.
Both apps gave me similar data about total sleep time, but their reports for how much “good” sleep I got or how long I spent in deep sleep were often wildly different. I get the feeling that they simply have different definitions of these things. What is more important is that they’re both pretty consistent, at least once you set them up properly and you’ve given the learning heuristics a week or two to figure out your sleep patterns.
I found Pillow’s basic information to be presented in a more appealing and easy to understand format, and its Apple Watch app and notifications are great. I like AutoSleep’s charts for detailed information, but I honestly rarely drill down that deep. Pillow’s daily sleep summary notification includes a little graph, which I appreciate.
Fortunately, there’s no real reason not to run both of them. The impact on battery life is minimal—the apps are basically just taking the Watch’s history of movement and heart rate data and processing that—so it’s not as if either app has to be “active” while you sleep. I successfully used both for several weeks, and never had any problem with battery life on my 40mm Series 4. A couple hours of charging in the evening is all I needed to track sleep that night and use my watch the following day.
We still think Apple should provide its own sleep tracking in watchOS 6. Given all the ways Apple is using machine learning to build activity profiles, fall detection, and more, it seems like a natural fit. But until then, you can get a great third-party alternative for just a few bucks with either AutoSleep or Pillow.

One of the most requested features for Apple Watch is sleep tracking, and with watchOS 7 and iOS 14, Apple is finally bringing it to the table. In true Apple style, it does much more than track when you start and stop sleeping.
It would be easy enough for Apple to create an app that detects the start and stop point of your sleep. Apple has a tendency to go the extra mile on features, however, thinking about the implementation as a whole, and not just what users anticipate.
For watchOS 7 and iOS 14, Apple thought about the entire sleeping experience for users. That includes keeping a consistent routine, settling down before bed, gently waking up, and analyzing the data that is collected.
So that’s what Apple did by introducing the Sleep app for Apple Watch, sleep mode for iPhone and Apple Watch, revamping the Bedtime feature found in iOS 13, and introducing Wind Down.
Starting sleep tracking with Apple Watch
To get started with sleep tracking for watchOS, users can jump into the new Sleep app on the wrist-worn computer or into the Health app of their iOS 14-equipped iPhone. We opted for the latter.
When you go to the sleep category of the Health app, there is a new option to set your bedtime schedule. First, you can enable sleep mode. Sleep mode simplifies your Lock Screen at your scheduled Bedtime and will turn on Do Not Disturb to reduce interruptions.
The app will then suggest you enable Wind Down. The idea is that your nighttime routine can begin prior to your bedtime, before you go to sleep. Sleep mode is when you’re actually sleeping and Wind Down is everything leading up to that. You choose how much before your bedtime you want to start Wind Down. This can be between 15 minutes and three hours.
What Wind Down will do is help with those routines as you get ready for bed while reducing the screen time on your phone. It simplifies your Lock Screen, just showing the time, your alarm and any Shortcuts or apps you may use. Create a Shortcut to listen to a relaxing podcast, play your nighttime music playlist, or start your two-minute teeth brushing timer. Whatever you do before bed can be added here.
Finally, Health will ask if you want to track your sleep with Apple Watch. You then get your summary of everything you set up including your schedule and features enabled.
Apple Watch details
Once everything is set up, you can start tracking sleep. Almost everything happens in the background. Your phone will go into Wind Down mode before it Watch go into sleep mode.
Sleep mode is able to be manually set, too, on both the watch and phone. Just go into Control Center on each device and toggle it on.
When the Apple Watch is in sleep mode, the display stays black as you move your wrist about, preventing it from inadvertently lighting up while you are trying to sleep. And tapping the screen causes is it to light up very dimly with the time and when your alarm is set.
If you want to use your watch, it makes you rotate the Digital Crown, similar to expelling water after swimming. This too stops the watching from waking by accident.
Once you wake up, your Apple Watch will greet you with a “good morning” summary that lets you know how long you slept, what the weather looks like for the rest of the day, and what your battery life is for your watch.
You can revisit your sleep history by checking out the Sleep app your Apple Watch or by visiting the Health app on your iPhone. It will show you how long you slept, how many times you woke up, and how consistent you’ve been.
Keep up with your battery
Speaking of battery, this is likely one of user’s biggest concerns. Apple doesn’t have a way to magically extend your watch’s battery life but it does try to help you manage it.
When it is almost time for bed, if your battery life is less than 30 percent, your phone will notify you that you need to charge. And when your watch is charging, your phone will get an alert letting you know when it hits a full charge so you can go grab it.
Apple Watch does charge quick and in our time testing, we haven’t had much issue keeping the watch juiced up — even on a beta. We top it off while we are in the shower and maybe a few minutes in the morning before work and it makes it through the day and night.

Together, the new features cover the entire experience of sleeping and helps you better your sleep patterns. You slowly wind down your day by reducing distractions and getting into your bedtime routine. Your phone stays silent on Do Not Disturb mode while you sleep and your Apple Watch tracks you at the same time and doesn’t turn on and blind you. When you wake up, your watch greets you, as does your iPhone, to start your day.
It has been a long time coming, but Apple’s implementation is well thought out, unique, and a phenomenal example of Apple’s ecosystem working together.

Apple seems to be hard at work on new features for its wearable. Yesterday, news broke that the company is planning on integrating a feature that will detect low blood oxygen levels in a user, which could help prevent heart and lung complications. Further leaks obtained by 9to5Mac show that Apple could soon introduce a way for parents to use their iPhones to set usage limitations on their kids’ Watches, as well as some frequently-requested sleep tracking features.
Currently, a single iPhone can be paired to multiple Apple Watches, but only one can be used at a time. Plus, any Watch paired to the iPhone has to use the same Apple account. This is fine for a single person that has several Apple Watches, but it doesn’t work well for families — kids may not have an iPhone to pair their Apple Watch to, which is required for setting up and taking full advantage of the device. The new feature discovered by 9to5Mac will allow parents to set up a child’s Apple Watch, as well as set trusted contacts. Additionally, a new “Schooltime” setting will allow parents to limit the Apple Watches’ features during certain hours. For example, a parent could turn off texting apps while the child is in school.
Despite having been working on sleep tracking integration for years, Apple Watch users still don’t have a first-party way to measure their sleep health. That might finally change with watchOS 7, though. The same leaks obtained by 9to5Mac show the ability for users to set sleep goals on their iPhone, indicating that the Apple Watch would keep tracking sleeping patterns. Current Apple Watch models shouldn’t have a problem detecting when a user goes to bed, if they wake up during the night and when they wake up. But whether or not they can differentiate between REM and non-REM sleep remains to be seen.
These new features would hit Apple Series 6 and watchOS 7. It’s not clear whether or not they’ll need the new hardware presumably found in the next generation of the Apple Watch to function or if they’ll be available to current users. It would make sense if additional sensors were needed for detecting blood oxygen levels and certain aspects of sleep, but hopefully the parental controls simply come with a firmware update. We may have to wait a while to find out — new models of the Apple Watch usually aren’t announced until the late summer or early fall.
Last year, with the introduction of watchOS 7, Apple added the ability to track your sleep metrics using the Apple Watch. Now, with watchOS 8, you can also track your respiratory rate throughout the night, which could help to detect early signs of medical conditions like sleep apnea, and chronic lung disease, among others.
Using its built-in accelerometer, the Apple Watch can track the number of breaths you take per minute while asleep. The results are then recorded in the Health app, which also gives you deeper insight into the data on a daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly basis.
Here’s how to monitor your breathing rate while you sleep with Apple Watch.
First, let’s make sure your Apple Watch is compatible
Before you get too excited, it’s important to make sure your Apple Watch is compatible with watchOS 8, which was launched on Sept. 20, 2021. Here’s a list of models that play nicely with the new operating system:

Set up and turn on “Sleep Mode” at night
To enable Sleep Mode, you have two options:
Manually turn it on every night
Swipe up to the Control Center on your Apple Watch, tap on the Do Not Disturb icon, and then tap on the “Sleep” tab.
You can also do this on your iPhone, which will then automatically put your Apple Watch into Sleep Mode, too. To do this, swipe down to the Control Center, tap on the Focus tab, and then tap the Sleep icon.
Set it to automatically turn on
If you’re the type to forget to turn Sleep Mode on before going to bed, it can be set to turn on automatically, too. On your Apple Watch, tap on the Sleep app, choose your Wake Up time and Bedtime, and then set the specific days you’d like for it to kick in.
Sleep Mode can also be set up on your iPhone.
Go to the Health app > Browse > Sleep and scroll down to “Your Schedule.” Tap on the “Full Schedule & Options” tab, and then “Edit” to set your Bedtime and Wake Up time.
Open the Health app in the morning
When you wake up, you can check on your breathing rate via the Health app. Open the app and scroll down until you see the Respiratory Rate section, and then tap on it. You can also access it using the app by tapping on the Browse tab followed by the Respiratory tab.
Check your stats
At the top, the Respiratory Rate section includes a chart that shows your range of breaths per minute based on the hour, day, week, month, and year. Additional data and information on the topic will appear as you scroll down.
To see your breaths per minute while asleep, tap on “Show More Respiratory Rate Data.” At the bottom is a dedicated Sleep section that displays your specific number of breaths per minute.
As you continue to wear the Apple Watch to bed and monitor your breathing, the Health app will be able to identify more in-depth and useful trends over time.

As popular as the Apple Watch has been, it’s never had the battery life of some other personal tracking devices. This has limited its usefulness as a sleep tracker. But now that Apple is adding sleep, what does that say about the battery? We have some thoughts.

The Apple Watch and sleep tracking. They seem they should go together like oatmeal and peanut butter (hey, it’s good — try it). But there’s always been a concern about battery life. The Apple Watch does not have a week-long battery life like some of its competitors, so the question of sleep tracking has gone hand in hand with the battery life question.
This limitation has generally been the reason Apple hasn’t included a sleep tracking app with the Watch — until now. At WWDC 2020, Apple’s Health Software Engineering manager, Vera Carr, gave an overview of the new sleep-related functions.
These features include Wind Down, a timing feature to help remind you to get ready for bed. It even includes shortcuts to meditation and music playing apps to help you drift off. The Watch is gaining a sleep mode which functions like Do Not Disturb with a dimmed screen. In the morning, it can wake you with an audible alarm or a silent one that taps on your wrist.
And here’s where we don’t think there’s been much battery life improvement. Carr said, “It also shows your battery level so you can remember to charge in the morning.” As she said this, an image of the watch was shown with a 45% capacity.
In fact, when setting up sleep tracking, the new Watch OS 7 will ask if you want charge reminders, specifically so you can top off your watch’s battery so it can make it through the night.
Beyond the basic features above, the Watch apparently uses machine learning to analyze behaviors that indicate sleep, including the “micro-movements caused by the rise and fall” of your breathing.
There’s also a new sleep section in the Health app that provides trends over time.
This is all nothing new
Sleep tracking on this level is nothing new for the Apple Watch. I’ve been tracking my sleep every night since November, when I bought my Apple Watch Series 4 refurb. I haven’t used an Apple-issued app, but I have been using AutoSleep, a four dollar app on the App Store.
AutoSleep works great. It has a Watch app that you set and forget. The app on the watch does the sleep tracking and reports back to a far more comprehensive app on the iPhone. AutoSleep on the iPhone captures a ton of metrics, and provides you with lots of ways of slicing and dicing the data.
I, personally, look at the total sleep time after I’ve had coffee in the morning. If I’ve had enough sleep (which for me is about five hours and above), I don’t take a nap during the day. But if I got less than four hours of sleep overnight, I try to allocate time for a power nap sometime in the middle of the day.
Okay, but what about the battery?
I have had absolutely no trouble with battery life, but I set up a relatively strict but easy charging routine to make sure my Watch always has a charge. It goes like this.
At night, when I sit down on the couch with my wife and pup to watch a little TV, I put my watch on its charger. The Watch charges in less than an hour, so as long as I leave it on the charger for a little while, I get a full charge and I’m once again good to go.
Really, the only thing necessary is the added discipline of remembering to charge it for a short time. You could charge it while in the shower. You could charge it when you first sit down at your desk at work. Or you could charge it while you watch Star Trek reruns. No matter, it’s not hard as long as you incorporate charging into your daily schedule.
What about Apple’s next Watch?
That is the question, isn’t it? Apple’s Sleep Tracking for the current Apple Watch is nothing special. You have to go through the protocol I described above (or something similar) to make sure your Watch stays charged.
Apple seemed to imply the same would be the case for the Series 6 Watch coming in the fall. But I don’t know. Apple doesn’t typically like releasing mediocre solutions with mediocre hardware. They’re usually content to let app developers fill in the blanks when Apple itself can’t provide a stellar offering.
There is no doubt that the Apple sleep features of WatchOS 7 are not stellar. So why did Apple do it?
Now, this is purely speculation, but I’d be willing to bet half a grilled cheese sandwich that the Apple Watch Series 6 will have substantially better battery life. Again, it’s a guess. But it would explain why a sleep app will be able to be part of WatchOS 7.

How does the ‘Sleep Tracking’ feature work?
According to Apple, the Sleep Tracking feature leverages Machine Learning Algorithms to analyze your sleep motion from your wrist using sensors and photodiodes.
Apart from this, your Apple Watch will also keep an eye on any micro-movements such as rise or fall in the pulse rate, breathing pattern, and so on. These stats will help in evaluating your sleep quality and can in turn assist you in improving your sleep.
From WatchOS 8 onwards, the sleep tracking feature will also track your respiratory rate or the number of breaths you take while you’re asleep. All these insights can be seen on your account in the Health app.
How to enable the Sleep Tracking in watchOS 8
The Sleep Tracking feature was officially introduced in WatchOS 7 as a part of the Sleep App. WatchOS 8 will strengthen this feature by making several improvements.
You have the flexibility to plan your routines and resting periods. The Sleep Tracking feature also lets you set up and achieve your goals and monitor your sleep quality. Here’s how to do all this on your Apple Watch running on WatchOS 8:

- Open the Sleep App and set up your first-ever sleeping schedule. You’ll have options to allow Watch to track your sleep every day or only specific days or just weekends.
- After setting up your sleep schedule, it’s time to specify your Wakeup Time. You can also choose whether you want an alarm to wake you up in the morning or not.
- Next, set up the time to go to bed and finally press the Next button.
Similarly, you can also set up the sleeping schedules for other days and other times as well. For instance, you can have a different sleeping schedule for weekends and weekdays.
As soon as Bedtime approaches, the Sleeping Tracking Mode is enabled automatically. The Sleep Tracking feature in turn activates the Do Not Disturb Mode so that there is no distraction and you can relax your mind in Wind Down.
Apple Watch’s Wind Down Mode
In the Wind Down Mode, the distractions are minimized so that you can reach your bed at the time set up by you.
This is achieved by creating a relaxing and peaceful environment around you in the evening by playing some soothing music or letting you meditate.
Before Bedtime approaches, Wind Time mode will gradually modify your iPhone and Apple Watch screens to help you sleep at the right time. It takes the help of the following features:
Wind Down Screen
The Wind Down Screen helps you smoothly transit from a hectic and stressful day to a relaxed mindset before the night turns in. Your iPhone screen is dimmed and night mode is enabled to minimize the blue light.

Do Not Disturb Mode
In the Wind Down Mode, Do Not Disturb is automatically enabled on your iPhone so that your screen is not illuminated with notifications. This will help you calm down and prepare for sleep without any obstacles.
Apple Watch Sleep Mode
Your Apple Watch screen will also be dimmed just like your iPhone in the Wind Down. The display will be off and the sleep timer will appear when you’ll tap the screen.
You can also set up a gentle alarm to wake you up the next morning. If you don’t want to do that, the hepatic touch will wake you up without disturbing anyone sleeping next to you.
The next morning, you will be greeted on the Watch Screen and you will also be prompted to charge your Apple Watch if needed. If your Apple Watch’s battery is too low before bedtime, you will be prompted to charge it. This is so that the Sleep Tracking feature can monitor your sleep without any interruptions.
That’s all about the Sleep Tracking feature on your Apple Watch. After you wake up you will see a summary of your sleep data such as sleep duration, respiratory rate, and so on.
