How to setup your new chromecast

Various casting devices allow you to stream media files from mobile phones and tablets to your TV or PC, but Google Chromecast is one of the most portable devices amongst them. You can take it everywhere, but there’s a small catch—it can remember only one Wi-Fi network at a time.

How to setup your new chromecast

If you take your Chromecast everywhere or you have more than one Wi-Fi source inside the house, you’ll need to change its Wi-Fi regularly. The process can be straightforward or a bit tricky, depending on the reason for the change.

Two Primary Reasons to Change Wi-Fi Networks

Reason 1: Network Changes

Usually, the reason to change Chromecast to a new Wi-Fi connection is a simple switch between networks, such as going from broadband to mobile hot spot or when traveling. The steps are a piece of cake, and all you need to do is ensure that your mobile device is close to the streaming one.

Reason 2: Network is No Longer Active

If the Wi-Fi network to which you connected your Chromecast is not active anymore, things will get a bit tricky. That will happen when you change your router. You’ve set up your Chromecast for the network that doesn’t exist anymore, so your Google Home app on your mobile device won’t be able to recognize it.

There is a solution for both, and this article provides a step-by-step guide to get you up and running again.

How to setup your new chromecast

Perform a Simple Network Switch

If your existing network is active, you’re merely switching Chromecast from one to another.

  1. Make sure that Chromecast and the HDTV are on and functional. Then open the Google Home app from your Android or iPhone.
How to setup your new chromecast
  2. There’s a three-bar menu icon at the top-left corner of your screen—tap on it and choose “Devices” from the menu.
How to setup your new chromecast
  3. There will be another ellipsis (three-dots) menu icon on the “Device settings” screen, and you need to select “Settings” from the drop-down menu to bring up the “Chromecast Wi-Fi” menu.
How to setup your new chromecast
  4. Select “New Network,” and then choose the one you want and connect to it.
How to setup your new chromecast

Keep in mind that the Wi-Fi network on Chromecast needs to match with the one on your phone. If you get the error message, this could be the only possible issue.

Change Modem or Router

If you have changed your network, your Android phone or iPhone won’t connect to your Chromecast.

If this is the case, your best bet is to reset Chromecast manually. That will erase the old Wi-Fi network, and allow you to use the new Wi-Fi network.

The button next to the micro USB port on Chromecast is the Reset button. Press it and hold down for 15 seconds.

The light on the device will flash while you’re holding the button down, so you’ll know to release when the light stops flashing and remains lit.

Now Chromecast will reboot and reset itself to default factory settings afterward. It will erase the old Wi-Fi network, as well as all the settings. Therefore, you’ll need to go through the setup again and connect it to the new Wi-Fi network.

If you’ve forgotten the steps or had someone else do it, follow the guide below.

Setup Up Chromecast in Android or iPhone After the Reset

Setting up Chromecast is the same for iPhones and Android phones, and it’s a pretty straightforward process.

  1. Plug the Chromecast device into your TV’s HDMI port. Then take the remote and set the input to the one you used to plug in your Chromecast.

  2. Since you already have the Google Home app installed on your mobile device, tap on the “Set up 1 device” option on the Home Screen. Choose a Home for your device and hit “Next.”

  3. The app will search for nearby devices. After it locates your Chromecast, tap “Yes” to move on. You’ll see a code on your phone, as well as on your TV screen. Tap “Yes” again to confirm you can see it and follow the prompts.

  4. Choose the location where your Chromecast will be. Tap “Next” and follow the prompts to connect to the new network.

Possible Solutions to Failed Chromecast Connection

If you’re facing some difficulties during the setup process, there are a few things you need to check on your Android or iPhone.

Solution 1: Ensure Both Devices are in The Same Network

First, you need to make sure that both Chromecast and your mobile device are on the same Wi-Fi network. To do this, navigate to “Settings” and choose “Wi-Fi.”

Solution 2: Ensure Bluetooth is On

Your Bluetooth option also needs to be turned on. To check this, navigate to “Settings” and choose “Bluetooth.”

Solution 3: Reconnect to Network

After you’ve made sure that your smartphone and Chromecast are on the same Wi-Fi network and that Bluetooth is on, visit “Settings” again, and choose “Wi-Fi,” then tap on Chromecast’s open Wi-Fi network to connect to it.

How to setup your new chromecast

In closing, the setup process depends on whether you’re switching networks, or you’ve changed your router or modem. In the first case, the steps are quite simple. The second scenario will require you to reset the Chromecast and go through the setup process again.

One of the safest ways to fix many problems with your Chromecast is to optimize it well.

Each Chromecast — whether you own a legacy stick, a second- or third-generation Chromecast, or a 4K-connected Chromecast Ultra, has a factory-reloading button located near the power port. The steps for restarting the Chromecast Factory are the same no matter which version you own.

  • Insert your Chromecast into the power supply, including the USB cable: power supply.
  • Hold down the factory reset button for 25 seconds.
  • The LED light on your Chromecast will leave the orange to indicate that it is self-transforming. When it turns solid white, you can release the button.

Chromecast will not stay connected to Wi-Fi. Reload guide

Here’s how to restart your Chromecast if it doesn’t stay connected to your Wi-Fi connection.

  • Make sure the power light (white) on your Chromecast is on, that the Wi-Fi lights on your router are on, are working.
  • Hold down the restart button on your Chromecast device for twenty-five seconds.
  • Restart your router. Different models are different, but there is usually a small button to reset it, use a pin, hold it until the router resets.
  • Disconnect your broadband router from the network and connect it. Wait for it to be fully initialed.
  • Connect your Chromecast to your TV again with an HDMI cable.
  • Connect the power cord to your Chromecast, as well as the network.
  • Make sure your router is not too far from your Chromecast device (within 10–15 feet).
  • If your router is in another room, you can purchase a Wi-Fi amplifier to amplify the signal.
  • If you use dual Wi-Fi and first-generation Chromecasts, be sure to connect your Chromecast to a 2.4GHz Wifi network, not 5GHz.
  • Check for any updates to your router; if so, contact your ISP for assistance.

If those options don’t work, try connecting your Chromecast device to another network (for example, your phone’s mobile hotspot) and TV (if you have another one at home). The fault may be in the device itself and you may need to replace it.

10. Assign a name to your Chromecast – make sure it’s something you can easily distinguish from other devices you may have on the Google Home app.

11. Next, choose which room your Chromecast is in on the app. This, too, is important if you have multiple devices on your Google Home app, especially multiple Chromecast devices. You can also choose a custom room name, if you prefer.

12. Choose whether or not to send crash reports to Google when something goes wrong with your device – these reports help Google learn and improve their devices.

13. Choose whether to enable Guest Mode, which allows guests to control the Chromecast if they have a special code, which you can get under the device’s settings on the Home app, or on the TV screen. When you’re finished, tap “Continue.”

14. Enter the credentials for the Wi-Fi network you want to connect your Chromecast to.

Optional: Link your Google account to your Chromecast. This isn’t necessary, but doing so allows you to access extra features, like displaying your own photos as the screensaver image.
