How to transfer vr videos to your oculus go from your pc (and play them)

The Oculus Go is a great VR headset, but it doesn’t have a lot of storage. All your videos and movies are on your PC, so rather than copy them to your Oculus, why not just stream them? Here’s how to do that.

Watching a movie in a VR headset is a very cool experience—you can basically watch a movie in a huge virtual theater that makes it feel like you are really there. But that’s just the start, because you can get 3D movies that display in VR, and you can also get full VR videos that let you look all around and really feel like you’re there.

Do You Have a Plex Server? Just Use the Plex Client

How to transfer vr videos to your oculus go from your pc (and play them)

If you’re a serious media-watching type person, you probably have a Plex server all running and organized. If so, you can simply grab the Plex client from the Oculus Store. Open it up, connect to your Plex server, and you’re ready to go. It’s definitely our preferred solution overall for organizing your movies and watching them anywhere.

No Plex Server, or Want to Watch Videos Not in Plex? Use Skybox VR Player

Maybe you don’t want to put your more embarrassing stuff—like all of your linux fan club videos—onto your Plex server. Or maybe you don’t want to set up something as full-featured as Plex, and just want to quickly watch some videos to see what they are all about. It’s a heck of a lot easier to download stuff on your PC and stream them to your Oculus Go, rather than trying to clean up deleted files on the headset itself. Plus, it’s not like there’s a ton of space on your Oculus Go.

If you’ve got a bunch of videos that you downloaded to your PC and you just want to stream them over to the Oculus Go headset, the easiest solution is Skybox VR Player. This works by running a small server piece on your actual PC or Mac. You add the videos to it, and then you can access them using the viewer piece on the actual headset.

This works for any type of video, whether it’s a full VR video experience, a 3D movie, or even just a regular 2D movie that you want to watch in a virtual theater. Keep reading for how to set it up, but it’s really easy.

Setup Your PC or Mac with the Skybox Server

How to transfer vr videos to your oculus go from your pc (and play them)

Setting up the Skybox server on your PC or Mac is incredibly easy—just download and install the server application. After it’s installed, fire it up, and click the “Open” button. You can add movie files individually, or you can add an entire folder full of movies at once. Skybox even searches subfolders, as well.

When the movies are all added, they should show up neatly in the list using the file names as the name of the video. You’ll probably need to wait a few minutes for it to generate thumbnails for everything, but when those are finished, you’re done.

Install the Skybox VR Client on Your Headset

Now that you have the server up and running, it’s time to install the client on your Oculus Go. This is also easy—just head to the Oculus Store, find Skybox VR Player, and install it.

When it’s installed, open the application, look on the left-hand menu for the Airscreen option, and then you can search for and connect to your server—which should show up as your PC’s name.

How to transfer vr videos to your oculus go from your pc (and play them)

Once you’ve connected, you should be able to see all of your videos. Just click one to start playback.

How to Fix Movies If They Don’t Play in the Right Format

If you’ve got a 3D or VR video that isn’t playing in 3D or VR, you can fix that by pulling up the controls. Just click once, and then click the little cube on the far right of the menu. This pops up a window with options for playing in 2D, 3D, or VR mode (and for switching between VR 180 and VR 360). If you’re not sure of the exact format of your video, just keep testing until it looks right.

How to transfer vr videos to your oculus go from your pc (and play them)

It’s worth noting that Skybox can also play videos that are local on the device, so if you download something directly on the headset, it’s going to show up in Skybox as well under All Files instead of Airscreen. Just make sure that you’re using private browsing mode and you know how to delete downloaded files. Otherwise you’ll have to clear your browser history, and nobody wants that.

Now that the Oculus Quest is out you might be enjoying the wonders of wireless, untethered, standalone VR in wide open spaces without any external tracking sensors. It’s a wonderful thing.

Luckily, the Quest makes it very easy to take screenshots and record video directly inside the headset and transferring those files to your PC for editing and sharing is simple as well as long as you know what to look out for. That’s where this guide comes in handy!

How to transfer vr videos to your oculus go from your pc (and play them)

This screenshot from Journey of the Gods was taken directly inside the Oculus Quest.

How To Take Screenshots And Record Videos In Oculus Quest

When you’re using your Oculus Quest taking a screenshot or recording a gameplay video is super simple. All you have to do is press the Oculus Home button on the right Touch controller, navigate to the Sharing section of the Home menu, and then click either Take Photo or Record Video.

If you clicked Take Photo then your Quest will switch back to whatever app you were in and blink a red dot in the upper right corner of your view for a few seconds before snapping the image. And if you record a video that red dot will stay there as long as you’re recording as a reminder. To stop recording just go back to the menu and click on Record Video again.

How To Transfer Screenshots And Videos From Oculus Quest

Transferring the files off of the Quest onto your PC for editing and sharing is simple as well, albeit a tiny bit more complicated. First and foremost, make sure your Quest is notin Developer mode. You can do this by opening the mobile app you used to setup your Quest, clicking on the headset in the Settings menu, click More Settings, and then make sure the “Developer Mode” toggle is off.

Then all you have to do is plug your Oculus Quest into your PC via a USB-C to USB cable and put it on quickly to accept the prompt asking for access.

From there, open up your File Explorer on your PC and you should see the Quest listed under “Devices and Drivers” alongside hard drives and other storage media. If you did the other steps correctly you should be able to open it up and see a directory that’s very similar to Android devices. If you left it in Developer mode then it’ll be blank.

To find your screenshots and videos navigate to Oculus > Screenshots or Oculus > VideoShots and just drag and drop. That’s it.

Other Tips

A few things to keep in mind:

  • All screenshots and videos are taken at 1024 x 1024 resolution,
  • Due to the variable refresh rate in videos, audio will frequently desynchronize from the video footage. This means most all Quest gameplay videos are borderline unusable in their raw form and you’ll need to edit them in a video editing program to make the audio line up correctly,
  • Video recordings will not record your microphone input, there is no option for this currently.

Everybody knows VR gaming is cool. That much is a given. But what about VR video? Do you know how to watch VR videos on Oculus headsets?

Wouldn’t it be nice to use a device designed to immerse you and allow you to view content meant for that all-surrounding environment, like 360 video, 3D Panoramic video, or even truly virtual reality video? Well, it’s not hard, and the Oculus series of VR headsets are well suited to the task.

Do you know how to watch VR videos on Oculus headsets?

What Is Oculus?

How to transfer vr videos to your oculus go from your pc (and play them)

In case you’re new to Oculus VR, they made waves in 2012 by raising $2.5 million on Kickstarter for their VR headset project and were promptly bought by Facebook in 2014. They released their first publicly available headsets in 2016, and they haven’t looked back. Now, Oculus is arguably at the top of the field in VR headsets.

Oculus headsets come in three flavors: The first is the tethered Oculus Rift S (descendant from the now-discontinued Oculus Rift), which requires a high-end gaming PC to run. Second and third are the standalone Oculus Go and Oculus Quest, both of which boast completely wire-free operation and include headphones.

The Quest is the latest incarnation, and as such, it boasts a smoother OLED lens versus Go’s LEDs, and it weighs a little more. The Quest only comes in 64GB, whereas the Go also has a cheaper 32GB model.

The sets are decently priced, with the Quest at the top of the heap, and the Go being Oculus’s more budget model. But they all come in right around the middle of the range for VR headsets. The Quest is a bit more expensive but well-loved by critics, earning a best in class nod from Tom’s Guide and PC Magazine.

More Than Just Games

How to transfer vr videos to your oculus go from your pc (and play them)

You probably already figured out that Oculus VR provides a fantastic gaming experience. Gaming in this immersive environment is more than just fun. It’s downright satisfying. But did you ever wonder about how to watch VR videos on Oculus headsets?

As it turns out, it’s relatively easy to watch 360 videos, entirely VR videos, 3D videos, and even plain old regular 2D videos on Oculus headsets. It may seem counter-intuitive to watch an ordinary movie in a VR set, but it can be pretty cool. Of course, there’s no substitute for a headset for truly VR video, and 360 and 3D videos are amazing in that space.

There’s a slightly different procedure for checking out videos on each of the sets, and the main distinction to be aware of is that you’ll need to physically put the video files on the standalone units (that’s the Quest and the Go). With the Rift, you can actually paste a YouTube or other streaming URL into the app and stream videos right in the headset.

Let’s go over each in turn, starting with the two standalone headsets.

How To Watch VR Videos On Oculus Quest And Oculus Go

There are two options when learning how to watch VR videos on Oculus Quest or Go. You can download certain content directly from your headset, or you can transfer your own files to the headset, much like you would any other USB device.

Get The app

To watch videos, you’ll have to get the Oculus Video app first. Then you can download videos directly to your device or watch videos you’ve transferred. To get the app, simply follow these steps:

  1. Put on your headset and power up.
  2. Select “Search” from the bottom right of the home screen toolbar.
  3. Type “Video” into the search field and hit “Go.”
  4. Select “Oculus Video” and then “Download.”

Once you’ve got the app, there are a bunch of categories of curated content to choose from like news, entertainment, travel and nature, documentary, horror, thrills, and “editor’s choice,” or you can watch your own.

Watch What You Want

To actually watch videos on Oculus Quest or Go, put on the headset and select “Library” from your home screen toolbar. Pick the Oculus Video app, and on the left side menu, you should be able to pick a category. If you select “My Videos,” that’s where you’ll find videos you’ve transferred to the device. (Scroll down for how to do that.)

Things To Know

To start the steps of how to watch VR videos on Oculus standalone headsets, you’ll need a Wi-Fi connection. In order to watch videos that aren’t already stored on the headset, purchased videos only stream (i.e., you can’t download them), and some mp4s have an audio format that won’t work in Oculus Video.

For reference, video formats that work with Oculus Video are mp4, m4v, 3gp, 3g2, webm, mkv, wmv, and avi. Audio formats that DO work are mp3 and aac.

If you want to put your own videos on your headset, it’s not a hard thing to do. Just follow these steps:

The Oculus Go does not contain extremely strong hardware, but because the hardware is exclusively used to run VR, without the overhead of a phone, it is capable of some pretty impressive video playback (read: up to 4096×[email protected] HEVC videos). This article explains how you can easily transfer your 360º videos to your Oculus Go.

Transferring 360º video to Oculus Go

  • Connect your Oculus Go to your computer using USB
  • Put your Oculus Go headset on to give your computer permission to access the Go’s storage
  • Now copy your 360º videos to the Movies folder on the Oculus Go (on Mac you need Android File Transfer for this)
    • For 360º monoscopic videos, your file should be named filename_360.mp4
    • For 360º stereoscopic videos, your file should be name filename_360_TB.mp4
    • Regular videos can also be uploaded and will be displayed in a virtual movie theatre, no filename conventions required for this (filename.mp4)

You should now see the videos you uploaded, and you can click one to start playing it. Easy peasy.

TIP: Make sure you have turned OFF developer mode in your Oculus Go app, or else your computer might not recognize the device for some weird reason and you won’t be able to transfer any files.

Let us know if you have any questions or comments about transferring photos and videos from your Oculus Quest to your PC down below!

Due to the meager storage capacity of the Oculus Go, being able to stream video files over WiFi using a portable device is a real game-changer when traveling away from home. Historically, my portable streaming device of choice was the RAVPower RP-WD04. However, I found streaming the generally larger VR files to be problematic using this device. Fortunately, RAVPower has a new version, the RP-WD09, which handles them nicely. I’ll refer to the device simply as the FileHub. (Make sure you don’t get the RP-WD07 as some significant improvements were made and it looks nearly identical to the RP-WD09.)

You’ll need a streaming video client app on your Oculus Go and I’ve found two that work well: Pigasus VR Media Player ($3.99) and Skybox VR Player (free). I prefer Pigasus because you can set it up so you don’t have to login every time you connect to the streaming server. The process to store your logon credentials is a bit tedious, but you only have to do it once.

    SETTING UP THE FILEHUB

    1. Connect your phone to the FileHub’s WiFi connection. The default passphrase is 11111111 (eight ones).

    2. Open the FileHub app and tap the gear icon in the top-right to open settings. You should be using the newer RAV FileHub app, not the older FileHub Plus app. (Note that in lieu of using the app, you can also use the web interface by browsing to http://10.10.10.254 using your phone’s web browser.)

    3. If you’ve already set up the 5GHz connection, you can skip to step 7.

    4. Navigate to WiFi_Disk Settings > WiFi_Disk Settings(5G) > Security. Enter you desired passphrase and tap Save.

How to transfer vr videos to your oculus go from your pc (and play them)

    5. Go back to the main screen and you should see a dialog that says the device needs to reboot. Tap Ok.

    6. After the device reboots, you’ll probably have to reconnect to the FileHub’s Wifi and reopen the app.

    7. Tap the gear icon in the top-right to open settings again. Navigate to WiFi_Disk Settings > System Settings > User settings.

How to transfer vr videos to your oculus go from your pc (and play them)

    8. Enter a password to be used for the admin account. Remember it for later steps. (By default, there is no password.)

    9. You can close the app now and change your phone’s WiFi connection back to whatever it is normally.

    10. If you haven’t already, put your FileHub in 5GHz mode. Pressing the 2.4G/5G button on the side and holding for a few seconds cycles through 2.4GHz, 5GHz and 2.4/5GHz modes.

Your FileHub is now ready to be connected to your Oculus Go.

    ADDING LOGIN CREDENTIALS TO PIGASUS

If you are opting for Skybox, you can skip these steps.

    1. On your PC, open a text editor like Notepad and enter “admin” on the first line and your password (set above) on the second line.

    2. Save this file somewhere handy, like on your Desktop, as 10.10.10.254.txt

Note that the Pigasus instructions tell you to save the file using the hostname, which is FileHub. However, I have found that Pigasus will not resolve this to the IP address, so naming the file using the actual IP address is the only way to get it to work.

    3. Connect your Oculus Go to your computer using a MicroUSB cable.

    4. If you are using Windows, the Oculus Go will appear in File Explorer as VR-Headset. A dialog will appear in your Oculus Go asking if you allow the connection. Click Allow.

How to transfer vr videos to your oculus go from your pc (and play them)

DEVELOPER MODE ISSUE: I found that if I had Developer Mode enabled and the ADB driver installed, I could no longer access the Go’s internal storage via USB cable. As such, you may have to turn it off and uninstall the ADB driver in Windows Device Manager. (Basically, you find the Go in the Device Manager and uninstall the device.)

    5. Using Windows File Explorer, open VR-Headset and double-click Internal shared storage. Drill down to Pigasus > SMB.

    6. Copy the 10.10.10.254.txt file and paste into this folder. (Note that once the Go is rebooted and you rerun Pigasus, the .txt file is encrypted and renamed with a .smb file extension.)

    7. Disconnect the Go from your PC.

    CONNECT TO THE FILEHUB SERVER

First, insert the SD card or connect your USB drive containing your video files to the FileHub. On your Oculus Go, connect to the FileHub’s WiFi. Note that it is not necessary for the FileHub to be connected to the Internet.

Now, if you are using Pigasus, open the app on your GO and click on the Samba icon. Then, click on 10.10.10.254. The storage volume will appear next. Click on it. Finally, a list of the files on the FileHub will appear. Click on a file to play it.

If you are using Skybox, click on Network on the left. A SMB FILEHUB entry will appear. Click on it. Enter “admin” as the username and your password. Don’t bother enabling Save your password. Sadly, it doesn’t work. Click Ok.

Well, that is it. As I said, getting the Pigasus login going is a bit of a pain and it costs four bucks. However, after you log into Skybox a few times, you’ll see that Pigasus is totally worth it!

The RAVPower RP-WD09 is quite an amazing device and I’ve only touched on one of it’s features. Besides allowing you to stream files to your Oculus Go, as well as to your phone, tablet, PC, etc., it works as a travel router or bridge. The bridge mode can be particularly handy as it allows you to, say, share a single paid hotspot, like at a hotel or on an airplane, to multiple devices. All devices can save their FileHub WiFi connection settings, so it can be beneficial even if the internet connection is free as each device won’t have to log into the hotspot.

In AP mode, it allows wireless connection to a wired Ethernet connection. They’ve also added the ability to quickly backup an SD card to a hard drive or flash drive which should be great for photographers. Oh, and did I mention, it also sports a 6700mAh battery that can charge other devices?!

The RAVPower RP-WD09 is a Swiss Army knife and a must-have accessory. Incidentally, if you’re looking for a good case for the RP-WD09, this AmazonBasics Hard Carrying Case fits perfectly and has room for extra SD cards and the manual.
