How to troubleshoot discord push to talk on windows 10

Push to Talk lets you control background noise when communicating with your friends in Discord. Sometimes, however, external factors like Windows 10 or other apps can prevent the feature from working properly. Here's how to troubleshoot common issues.

Check the Discord voice and video panel

A Windows update can replace your computer's drivers, and sometimes the fix is to reselect your audio devices in Discord. You can also try changing the USB port your headset is plugged into, or even turning Bluetooth off and on again.

To reselect your audio devices in Discord, look at the bottom left of the app screen and locate the “Gear” icon next to your profile. Click on the “Gear” icon to open your “User Settings”.

Navigate down to the “Voice and Video” settings tab and reselect your microphone under “Input Device”.

Discord provides a relatively easy way to verify that your microphone is picking up your voice; in that same panel, click on "Let's check", then speak into the microphone. If the indicator lights up, then the microphone is working. For the best quality for those listening to you, the meter should reach around 75% of maximum when speaking at normal volume.

It might sound silly, but reselecting the mic often fixes the problem.

As an additional measure, you can choose to let Discord notify you if your selected input device is not picking up audio from your mic. Scroll down the tab to find the toggle.

Check your default headset and microphone in Windows

Make sure your headphones are set as the default input / output device in Discord and your PC. On Discord, you can check this by selecting your input / output device in the “Voice & Video” tab.

The easiest way to check your default audio devices in Windows 10 is to check out the audio settings. Search for "Audio Settings" in your Start menu and choose your input / output devices from the drop-down menus.

When you're done choosing your default devices, close the screen: Windows 10 will automatically save your settings.

Check administration settings

If you are playing a game (or any app) that is running in administrator mode, push-to-talk keys will not be captured unless Discord is also set to administrator mode.

Giving focus to an application (which is running in Administrator mode) elevates the permissions of your input devices (keyboard and mouse), making them inaccessible to any background application (like Discord), which does not have not itself also high permissions.

More specifically, if you are tabbed in an application running in Administrator mode while Discord is running in Normal mode, Windows will deny Discord access to your keyboard. That's why running Discord in Administrator mode is the answer: It gives Discord access to everything, including your keyboard.

To resolve this issue, first manually close Discord in your taskbar. The Discord desktop app can be closed manually by expanding the Windows 10 system tray.

Then right click on the Discord launcher and choose 'Run as administrator'.

Try starting an audio call with friends with “Push To Talk” enabled to see if this method works.

Check your key set

Start by selecting your user settings in the lower left corner of the Discord window and return to the “Voice and Video” settings tab. Any keyboard shortcuts you are currently using with Discord will be listed in the "Keyboard Shortcut Settings" menu – make sure "Push To Talk" and "Push To Mute" are not set to the same key.

“Keyboard Shortcut Settings” is where you configure all of your keyboard shortcuts in Discord. Select "Push To Talk (Normal)" and choose the keyboard shortcut you want to use. This can be the same keyboard shortcut that you use in the "Shortcut" keyboard shortcut (shown in the screenshot above).

The “Push To Talk (Priority)” option is for those who administer a Discord server and want to create a Push to Talk button that allows them to talk quickly over other speakers in a voice channel.

Reset default voice and audio settings

Sometimes the best solution is a quick reset to factory defaults. Be warned that your input / output devices and keyboard shortcuts will be reset, so you can take note of your settings before clicking this button.

Scroll to the bottom of Twitch's “Voice & Video” settings tab and select the large red button that says “Reset Voice Settings”.

Return to the “Voice and Video” settings tab to reselect a keyboard shortcut for Push to Talk.

For the safe side, I recommend considering various games, while setting the key for PTT.

Discord has been gaining massive popularity among the gaming community in recent years. With new features added every few months, it is becoming a reliable communication tool even for businesses.

The Discord app makes it easy to conduct virtual meetings, livestream your gameplay, share screens with your friends, or video call your loved ones. However, you may occasionally run into problems with Discord.

One common issue that frustrates gplayers during gaming sessions or people attending a meetup is when Discord's microphone stops working.

Let's examine some commonly used methods for fixing your microphone and other voice-related issues in Discord.

1. Restart Your Device

When we face technical issues with apps or devices, restarting the device you're using to run the app is our first response. Most of the time, this fix works like a charm.

Upon restart, all backend drivers and registry files are created afresh, along with removing temporary files created during the previous runtime. Typically, this will fix a wide range of issues.

Therefore, before you try any other fixes, consider restarting your device to check if that resolves the issue. Otherwise, continue with the other fixes listed below.

2. Test Your Microphone

If you are using an external microphone as an input device, make sure that it is not faulty. Trying it in another app or with another device may help you determine whether the hardware itself is causing the issue.

If your microphone is the culprit, change it. If not, move on to the rest of the fixes.

3. Restart or Logout of Discord

Instead of diving into more complicated fixes, log out of Discord and restart your application. At first glance, it may sound innocuous, but in the vast majority of cases, this step will resolve the issue.

In the lower left corner, tap on User Settings (gear icon).

Log out, close the app, and then log back in again.

Doing this alone can solve some issues, but it doesn't always work. Move on to the next fix if that's the case.

4. Reset Discord's Voice Settings

Discord comes with a handy feature that allows you to reset the voice settings to default. This usually resolves most voice-related issues within Discord. Therefore, try resetting the voice settings to see if that fixes the problem.

Here is how you can reset voice settings in Discord:

  1. Click on Settings (gear icon) in Discord.
  2. Navigate to the Voice and Video settings in the App Settings.
  3. Tap Reset Voice Settings at the bottom of the page.

5. Give Discord Access to Your Microphone

Rarely, microphone access permissions limit the desktop apps' access to the microphone. If you have turned off automatic permission to use the microphone, Discord may not have access.

This is how you can enable microphone access for not only Discord but also all other apps:

Use the Windows search box to open Settings.

If the microphone access was already on, continue implementing the remaining fixes.

6. Change the Input Mode

If your microphone still does not work after following other fixes on the list, try changing the input mode in the voice settings to Push to Talk.

Push to Talk settings require you to press a specific keyboard key to allow the microphone to transmit audio. This setting helps solve most microphone problems, including the broken mic input and cracking voice recording, so it may also work in this case.

Here is how you can change the Input Mode in Discord:

  1. Tap on Settings (gear icon) at the lower left corner in Discord.
  2. From the left sidebar, select Voice & Video under App Settings.
  3. Change the input mode from Voice Activity to Push to Talk.
  4. To activate Push to Talk, set any keyboard key as a Shortcut.

Although this fix may solve the problem, it has its quirks from time to time. So, if the microphone problem goes away, you can change it back after some time.

7. Disable Exclusive Mode in Windows

In Windows, there is an exclusive mode that allows a single device to take over the whole sound driver.

This mode could cause issues with your microphone, preventing other apps from using it if a priority app has control. So, to out rule this cause, follow the below steps to disable the exclusive mode.

  1. Search for Sound Settings in the Windows search bar at the lower-left corner and open it.
  2. Tap on Device properties after selecting your input device.

8. Update Your Audio Drivers

You can also check the system's audio drivers. You will face issues not only with Discord but also with other apps if the problem is with the drivers. Blue and black screen errors, cracking voices, and poor quality recording are all signs of outdated drivers files.

Your device likely has a specific driver for input audio devices that you can update to get your microphone working again. However, depending on the type of device you are using and the sound drivers it has, you may not find the main driver that needs to be updated. If this is the case, update all audio drivers regardless of which device you are using. In case the issue persists, you can reinstall all of them.

We will guide you through updating the Inter(R) Audio Display driver using the steps below. You can follow the same process to update other drivers as well.

Use the Windows search box to look for Device Manager.

The name of the device and drivers will differ depending on the hardware you use.

9. Reinstall Discord

If none of the above fixes works, you can reinstall the Discord app after uninstalling it. Sometimes, the hidden corrupted files prevent the app from functioning correctly. Often, it is overlooked as the root of many problems.

Here is how you can uninstall the app:

  1. Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features.
  2. In the app list, find Discord.
  3. Tap Uninstall by left-clicking on it.

Solve Voice Related Issues in Discord

The fixes in the list will solve not only the microphone problems but also other voice issues.

As mentioned earlier, you can either keep the mic and audio turned on all-time or enable the Push to Talk option. Once the Push to Talk option is enabled, your mic will be only active when you want to speak something. You can assign a hotkey for this action to be triggered and only if you press that particular key, the mic will be turned on. All other times, the mic will remain turned off. This will help us to eliminate unwanted noise and discussions during gameplays

How to enable Push to Talk in Discord Easily?

Push to Talk feature can be enabled on Discord on both PC as well as Mobile too. The procedure is pretty much the same for PC and web versions. I will make sure to include both in the guide below so you can follow it easily.

Activate Push to Talk on Discord – Computer

In this section, we will see how we can enable the PTT option on Discord on our computer. Follow the exact same steps for both the PC version and web version of Discord.

Step 1: From the bottom-left section of the screen, click on the cog icon next to your profile avatar to open user settings.

Step 2: From the left options panel, select ‘Voice and Video‘ under App Settings

Step 3: Under Input mode, you will be able to find two different options. The first one is Voice Activity and the second one is Push to Talk. By default, the first option will be selected. All you have to do is simply select the second option and hit escape to quite the settings page. If you are enabling the Push to Talk function on Discord Web Version then a popup might appear asking you to download the Discord software, just ignore it.

Step 6: Once selected, go back and you are all good to go

We have successfully enabled Push to Talk option on our Discord Mobile app.

After enabling PTT or Push to Talk option in Discord, next time onwards, you have the option to make the mic active only when needed. In PC and web versions you can assign a hotkey to trigger the action.

Why enable Push to Talk on Discord?

Discord mainly has two different input modes. The first one is the one that will be activated by default. If this option is enabled, then the mic will be in action as long as you don’t manually mute it. Sometimes it might become necessary for us to mute the mic over and over again. The second option PTT (Push to Talk) is here to help us in these kinds of situations. Let’s suppose you only want to use the mic when needed. Rather than muting the mic and unmuting it again, the best option will be to enable the Push to Talk option. Upon enabling a new button will appear which will let you turn the mic on or off. Whenever you press the button and speak it will be active, and when you leave the button, it will be turned off. Simple as that.

Final Verdict

This is how we enable PTT or Push to Talk option in Discord easily. PTT option is available on both Discord mobile app and PC/Web version of Discord as well. This option comes in handy when you want to activate the mic only when needed. It is super simple to activate the option and takes less than a minute or two.

Problem with in-game mic

Check again if you disabled all other devices under Recording panel, leave only your mic, and set it both as default device and default communication device.
Under Steam Voice Settings, re-test your microphone. Set Recording and Receive volume to half. Set a push-to-talk key.
Under Dota 2 Audio settings, uncheck both Open Mic. Set different keys (and not the same as the Steam Voice one). Set Open Mic Threshold to higher than 8%.
Uncheck Autodetect Audio Latency and Streamlined Push To Talk.

Check if you have other communication software running that might fight Dota 2 for control (TeamSpeak, Discord etc). – make sure you set up different keys for those and no open mic.
On Windows 10 I had an unusual bug where a Sound Recorder app was running in the background, blocking the mic. You should disable background apps that use your camera and mic (Privacy – Background apps) or disable access under Privacy – Camera – Let apps use my camera=No / Microphone – Let apps use my microphone=No.
As a last resort, Sound – Recording devices – Your Mic – Properties – Advanced – Uncheck both settings under Exclusive Mode and reboot.

can’t really test it now as i’ m about to go to sleep since it only started to happen and its not for every game that my mic isn’t working but 4/5 games but before i had no issue ever. i’ll do a good test run tomorrow when i play multiple games. some related stuff is below

I had the steam settings –> voice –> push to talk key ‘same’ as my dota 2 in game mic hotkey, what does that do and does it matter? What does the top selection, "auto transmit voice whenever i speak" and push to talk do? I think before it was on default and was on the top selection, not sure. Been playing around with stuff that I think can help to fix it ;x.

I do not see any apps in task manager or the tray at the bottom of my window that is opened and uses cam/mic so that shouldn’t be a factor. Is there a way to get a dropdown list of everything that has access to my camera/mic/etc.?

How would I disable background apps that use my cam/mic? Where is this ‘privacy’ setting?

I am going to test them all step by step, hoping I don’t need to get too far and it’s just a minor error.. Before TI week, it was still working no problem but after I came back and started playing, my mic hasn’t been working in game but still works when I login and use discord/skype. *I rarely use them but I logged in just to test* Every testing I did that requires the cam/mic all fully works, just not inside game. It randomly starts working in 1/5 of my games now..
