  • To share internet connection: The primary and the most popular function of the mobile hotspot is sharing the internet connection to some other devices. If you have a very fast internet connection and your friend hasn’t, you can share your internet with your friend over the Wifi hotspot. Just create a hotspot over Wi-fi and let your friend find it. If you prefer setting a security password for your connection, do let them know about that.
  • To play multiplayer games: There are plenty of games which allows multiplayer battles over the wireless LAN. They utilize the devices on the same network to setup a playing interface between them. The best example is Mini Militia which is very popular game that allows local multiplayer sessions. You just have to join the same network or connect to the Wifi hotspot from a device. If you don’t want to waste your internet data, make sure that your data connection is turned off.
  • For file transfer: You can also use the Wifi hotspots for file transfer purposes. Almost similar to the technology used in the Xender, you could use your Wifi hotspot for file transfer. When compared to other technologies like Bluetooth, this method will result in numerous times better transfer speed.

Most Asked Question Related to the Wifi Hotspot Creation on Android

Here are some of the popular questions related to creating a Wifi hotspot on Android devices. If you have any unsolved questions, this section may help you.

How Can I Connect to a Hotspot?

This is a very relevant question. After setting up the Wifi hotspot on your Android device, how could you connect to it? Is there any additional steps required to be able to complete the procedure? No. If you are aware of the method to connect to a regular Wifi connection, there is nothing else you have to know. If you are not, just navigate to Settings > Wifi > and Turn on the Wifi. You will see the Wifi hotspot there. Most probably, the Wifi name will be an unreadable combination of text starting with the letter ‘A’ (unless you changed it.)

How do I Turn on My Mobile Hotspot?

If you are asking about the Android devices, the steps are explained very nicely in the first section. If you are asking about the iPhone or other iOS devices, we will soon publish a detailed guide on turning on Wifi hotspot on such devices.

How do I Share My Mobile Data with Other Mobile over W-Fi?

If you want to share your internet to another device owned by you or any of your friends, you just have to follow the instructions to setup a Wifi hotspot on your device. Then connect the other device by searching the available Wifi networks. Now your devices are connected together over Wifi. As soon as you enable the Mobile Data option on your device, the other device will be able to receive the internet connection from yours. Both of you can enjoy the internet browsing at the same time without any difficulties.

Can I Connect My Device to a PC Using Wifi Hotspots?

Yes, you can. If your Laptop or Computer has the ability to find and connect to the available Wifi networks, you will be able to connect your Android device to the PC over Wifi. You can even share your mobile data to your PC from the Android smartphone or tablet. However, from our tests, few smartphones and PCs have some compatibility issues with each other. But most of the times, you will be able to connect your smartphone with PC over the Wifi hotspot.

It is not only for the internet sharing, but you can also utilize this for transferring files between the PC and Android device. The transfer speeds are very satisfying when compared to the USB connection method.

Is Wifi Hotspot Feature Available on All Android Devices?

If you own a comparatively new Android device, the answer is Yes. If not, it may be a No. In some old smartphones, and old Android versions, some features are missing. The Wifi hotspot feature is one of them. So, if you are using such as device, you won’t find the Wifi Hotspot option in your settings.

Another thing to be aware of is, there are no brand-specific restrictions for the Hotspot feature. It mostly depends on the Android version that your device is running on. Any of the popular Android smartphone manufacturers such as Sony, Samsung, Motorola, LG, Huawei has this hotspot feature built-in. So, no need to worry about any such incompatibility issues.

It was very easy to create a Wifi hotspot connection, isn’t it? If not, do let us know the problems you faced during the hotpost setup process. We will help you ASAP.

How to turn your mac into a wi-fi hotspot

Your Mac can function as a wireless hotspot, allowing you to connect your other devices to it and share its Internet connection. It’s just like tethering to your phone.

This is most useful if your Mac is connected to a wired network interface via Ethernet. You can connect your wireless devices to your Mac and share the wired Internet connection with them—almost as if your Mac were a wireless router.

Enable Internet Sharing and Configure Your Hotspot

The Wi-Fi hotspot option is part of the “Internet Sharing” feature in macOS. You’ll find it in the System Preferences window. Click the Apple menu, select System Preferences, and click the Sharing icon.

How to turn your mac into a wi-fi hotspot

Select the “Internet Sharing” option in the list. You’ll now need to select the Internet connection you want to share with the devices.

The one big limitation is that you can’t both be connected to a Wi-Fi network and host a Wi-Fi network at the same time.

For example, let’s say your Mac is connected to the Internet through an Ethernet adapter. You’d select Ethernet in the list at the top of the window and share that wired connection over Wi-Fi. If you’re connected via Bluetooth or tethered to an iPhone via a USB cable, you could also select those.

How to turn your mac into a wi-fi hotspot

In the “To computers using” box, enable the Wi-Fi option. This will create a Wi-Fi hotspot, and the Internet connection you selected at the top of the window will be shared with devices that connect to the Wi-Fi network.

Click the “Wi-Fi Options” button at the bottom of the window to configure your Wi-Fi hotspot. Select your preferred network name and the best Wi-Fi channel.

Be sure to click the “Security” box and select “WPA2-Personal” and provide a password. By default, the hotspot will be configured without a password and anyone will be able to connect.

When you’re done setting things up, click the checkbox to the left of Internet Sharing and click Start to activate your Wi-Fi hotspot.

If You Want to Share a Wi-Fi Connection

Your Mac’s physical Wi-Fi interface can either be connected to a Wi-Fi network or host its own network—it can only do one of these things at a time. This means you can’t be both connected to a Wi-Fi network and sharing that Wi-Fi network’s connection over Wi-Fi. Yes, you may sometimes want to do this—for example, when you’re staying in a hotel or other location that only allows you to connect one device to its Wi-Fi network.

Sharing a Wi-Fi network connection by creating another Wi-Fi network will require a separate physical network interface, such as a USB Wi-Fi adapter.

You could also just create a Bluetooth PAN (Personal Area Network). Connect to the Wi-Fi and tell your Mac you want to share the Wi-Fi connection over a Bluetooth PAN. If your other devices have Bluetooth, you can pair them to the Mac and wirelessly share the Wi-Fi connection over Bluetooth.

A Bluetooth PAN can take a bit longer to connect to—thanks to the Bluetooth pairing process—and can’t reach the speeds of Wi-Fi. However, it is also a bit lighter on your Mac’s battery life, so it’s not all bad.

How to turn your mac into a wi-fi hotspot

Windows has a useful feature that allows you to create a virtual Wi-Fi adapter interface, making it possible to both connect to a Wi-Fi network and create a Wi-Fi hotspot using the same physical network interface at the same time. This feature is hidden, but you can access it using the Virtual Router software—this uses the same Windows features as Connectify, a commercial application.

Macs unfortunately don’t have the same sort of virtual network interface feature. To share a Wi-Fi connection over Wi-Fi, you’ll need a separate physical Wi-Fi interface.

How to turn your mac into a wi-fi hotspot

Having spent some years coding applications for macOS we’ve created a tool that everybody can use. The all-round problem fixer for Mac.

How to turn your mac into a wi-fi hotspot

So here’s a tip for you: Download CleanMyMac to quickly solve some of the issues mentioned in this article. But to help you do it all by yourself, we’ve gathered our best ideas and solutions below.

Features described in this article refer to the MacPaw site version of CleanMyMac X.

The Sharing pane in macOS System Preferences is one of the most overlooked tools on the Mac. It has a wealth of options for sharing files, printers, your Mac’s screen, and network connections. In this article, we’ll show you how to share your Mac’s internet connection with other devices and turn your Mac into a Wi-Fi hotspot.

What is a Wi-Fi hotspot?

What do we mean when we say Wi-Fi hotspot? Any device connected to the internet to which another device can connect via Wi-Fi and share its internet connection. In this case, your Mac is connected to the internet, and another device can connect to it and share its internet connection. There are some limitations. The most important one is that if your Mac is connected to the internet using Wi-Fi, you can’t connect the other device to it via Wi-Fi. So, if your Mac is connected to a Wi-Fi network, you’ll need to share that connection using Bluetooth, Ethernet, USB, or Thunderbolt.

Apple doesn’t explain the reason for this limitation, but it’s likely to be related to bandwidth. If you use your Mac’s Wi-Fi to connect to a router and connect to another device, its bandwidth will be split between incoming and outgoing connections.

The other main limitation is that the Mac you use as a hotspot must be running macOS Lion or later. But given how old Lion now is, that shouldn’t be too much of a restriction.

How to create a hotspot on your Mac

First, you’ll need to decide how you want to share your Mac’s internet connection. Remember, if your Mac is connected to the internet using Wi-Fi, it can’t connect to the device using it as a hotspot via Wi-Fi. For this example, we’ll assume that the Mac is connected to a router with an Ethernet cable and that the other device is going to connect to Mac’s hotspot over Wi-Fi.

  • Go to Apple menu > System Preferences.
  • Choose the Sharing pane.
  • In the left part of the window, select Internet Sharing.
  • Click on the dropdown menu next to ‘Share your connection from’ and choose an option. We’ll select the Ethernet Adapter.
  • In the window ‘to computers using,’ check the box next to one of the options. We’ll choose Wi-Fi.
  • Press the Wi-Fi options button and give the network a name and password.
  • Click Ok.
  • Check the box next to Internet Sharing in the left part of the window.
  • Press Start to confirm.
  • Quit System Preferences.

Your Mac’s hotspot is now set up. All you have to do on the device you want to connect to is go to its Wi-Fi settings, choose the network name you created and type in the password. If you chose to connect via Bluetooth, go to Bluetooth settings instead. And if you chose a tethered method, like USB or Ethernet, you’ll need to plug the device into your Mac.

When you want to stop sharing your Mac’s internet connection, go back to System Preferences > Sharing and uncheck the box next to Internet Sharing.

If you use your MacBook when you’re out and about and there’s no public Wi-Fi, you can use an iPhone as a hotspot. It works in the same way as a Mac hotspot. All you have to do is go to Settings > Personal Hotspot and toggle the switch to On. You’ll see the password on the screen. To change it, just tap it and type a new one. You can now select the iPhone in your Mac’s Wi-Fi settings.

This could also be useful if you are in a location where you’re not sure if a public Wi-Fi network is trustworthy. Remember, though, that using your iPhone as a hotspot could use up quite a bit of your data allowance.

You might notice when you share your Mac’s internet connection that it slows down your mac. It makes sense that if you share your internet bandwidth with another computer or device, that it will be slower than it would if your Mac had that bandwidth all to itself. However, there are a few things you can do to mitigate the problem. One of those is to make sure your Mac is running optimally so that any further slowdown doesn’t have too much of an impact.

How to turn your mac into a wi-fi hotspot

The easiest way to do that is to use the Optimization module in CleanMyMac X. This handy tool scans your Mac and recommends specific operations to improve its performance, such as removing login items or launch agents, quitting hung applications, or dealing with apps that use lots of resources.

You can also use CleanMyMac X to clear out junk files on your Mac, which could free up gigabytes of space, and to run maintenance routines such as repairing disk permissions and reindexing Spotlight. Finally, CleanMyMac’s menu bar item displays network usage so you can quickly see the difference to your network when you share your Mac’s internet connection with another device. Download the app for free here to try out all the features mentioned.

It’s also worth noting that your Mac keeps a record of every Wi-Fi network you connect to so that you can connect to it quickly again next time you need it. HoweverYoues as a record of where you have been with your Mac. If you feel that is a privacy risk, CleanMyMac X’s Privacy module can remove those networks.

It’s very easy to set up a Mac hotspot so you can share your internet connection with other devices or computers. Just follow the instructions above and remember to turn off sharing when you no longer need it.

Why turn your Mac into a Wi-Fi hotspot

Having an old-school Ethernet connection does not limit you to having internet access on your Mac only.

Your Mac can actually become a “hub” for all the internet activity of your devices. Let’s see how to set it up as a personal hotspot for iPhones, tablets, MacBooks, or other laptops by turning on Internet Sharing on Mac.

How to create a Mac hotspot via Ethernet, USB Wi-Fi adapter, and Bluetooth

Before we get started, please note that Internet Sharing works for any computer running OS X Lion (10.6) or later.

So, let’s begin by opening System Preferences. It’s where all magic happens.

  1. Click on the Apple logo. From the drop-down menu select Preferences.
  2. Click on the Sharing icon. Tick the Internet Sharing option in the left pane.

Next, choose any of the preferred options from the Share your connection field: Ethernet, iPhone USB, or Bluetooth.

Scroll down this section to find the one you need and pick the way other devices will access the Mac hotspot.

For Ethernet:

Tick Wi-Fi in the To computers using field.

After that, click on the Wi-Fi Options box below to configure your hotspot.

When choosing any of the available sharing options, create a strong Wi-Fi password as initially this connection is not protected. To make it visible only to you, choose WPA2 Personal in the Security field and set up a secured pass.

For USB Wi-Fi adapter:

Having plugged and installed your Wi-Fi adapter, follow the same instruction as provided above.

In the To computers using field, enable Wi-Fi instead of Ethernet as a source of your hotspot.

For Bluetooth:

Creating a Bluetooth PAN (Personal Area Network) and sharing the internet connection via Bluetooth is often a way out.

To go with the Bluetooth option, follow the same setup process, just make sure that you select Bluetooth PAN in the To computers using box.

Please note, there might be a small setback when opting for Bluetooth. Be prepared that it will be slower than your usual Wi-Fi connection or shared from Ethernet, and some devices may not be compatible.

Finally, tick the Internet Sharing checkbox to open a dialog window asking if you really want to share your connection. Click OK to confirm.

Don’t forget to secure your Wi-Fi connection

Make your private connection even more private. To do so, install MacKeeper and activate the VPN Private Connect feature to create a Virtual Private Network (VPN) and have it on at all times or whenever you wish.

Enjoy a safe Wi-Fi zone!

When only wired internet access is available, turn your Mac into a Wi-Fi hotspot that allows wireless devices — like iPhone, iPad, and more — to share its network connection. It’s quick to set up and works brilliantly.

Here’s how to get started.

It’s not uncommon to find yourself in an office, coffee shop, or hotel that offers poor Wi-FI coverage — or none at all. Some hotels also charge you a fee for every single device that you want to connect to the internet.

But you don’t have to suffer these restrictions if you have a Mac. You can plug your machine into Ethernet instead, which gives you faster and more reliable speeds, then share that connection wirelessly with other devices.

Configure an internet-sharing network in macOS

  1. Open System Preferences and click Sharing.
  2. Click the Internet Sharing option.
3. Check Wi-Fi in the list of sharing options.
  4. Click the Wi-Fi Options… button.
  5. Give your network a name and password, then click OK.
  6. Check the Internet Sharing option.
  7. Click Start when prompted.

You should now be able to connect to your new Wi-Fi network from other devices. And because your Mac acts like any other Wi-Fi network, it doesn’t just work for iPhone and iPad, but anything that uses Wi-Fi.

Before you turn your Mac into a Wi-Fi hotspot, note that some hotels and other businesses strictly prohibit this behavior in their internet terms of service. So, check that you’re not going to get into trouble before doing it.

Did you know that you can use turn your Mac into a Wi-Fi hotspot? You can. Here’s how:
