Purpose

Mobile Plans is an application in Windows 10 that helps end users to connect their Windows device to cellular networks through mobile operators. The purpose of Mobile Plans is to:

  • Provide a consistent and simplified user experience for activation of cellular-enabled PCs.
  • Enable a new channel for cellular activation through adoption of eSIM
  • Increase adoption of cellular services on Windows PCs through a direct relationship between customers and mobile operators

Mobile Plans is supported in Windows 10, version 1803 and later.

Customer journey

The typical Mobile Plans customer journey is composed of the following steps:

Step Description
Discovery The user sees one of several entry points in the Windows UI and launches the Mobile Plans app. There are multiple entry points available in the Windows Shell that are tailored to various scenarios.
Browse & Welcome After the Mobile Plans app launches, the user chooses their mobile operator and sees the operator Gateway page. The Gateway page invokes the mobile operator web portal which hosts the next step. Note that some entry points take the user directly to the operator Gateway page.
Activation & Checkout The mobile operator web portal walks the user through sign in, activation and checkout
Fulfillment Upon completion of the activation step, the user will be provisioned for data. This step could include download and activation of an eSIM profile.
Usage The user enjoys the benefits of an always connected PC, and is able to see available balance directly in the Windows UI. They can easily return to the mobile operator web portal to manage their account and purchase additional data as needed.

User experience

The following sections illustrate the Mobile Plans user experience.

Launching the app

The Mobile Plans app can be launched from a number of different entry points. The most common entry point is the network flyout, as this is where users typically manage their active network interfaces in Windows 10. The cellular interface can be expanded to show status of the cellular network. In the example below, the device has no SIM profile activated, so the user sees a call to action to “Connect with a data plan.” Selecting this link will launch the Mobile Plans app.

See the Mobile Plans account management topic for more details on behavior of the network flyout.

The app can also be launched from a toast notification. Selecting the “Get connected” button will launch the Mobile Plans app.

See the Mobile Plans toast notifications topic for more details on the behavior of toast notifications.

The Mobile Plans app can also be launched from the Settings app, or from the Start menu.

Select provider page

Once the app has launched, the user has the option to choose their mobile operator. The app displays a list of available mobile operators based on the user’s current location.

See the Mobile Plans operator catalog topic for more information on this page.

Fulfillment

After completing the signup flow on the web portal, the mobile operator can trigger fulfillment based upon the type of signup. This could include download and installation of a new eSIM profile, or it could be the addition of new balance to an active account. Once the fulfillment step is complete, the web portal can invoke a popup to let the user know the process is complete.

See the Mobile Plans callback notifications topic for more information on this step.

How to upgrade your windows phone to windows 10 now

Microsoft is technically selling two phones with Windows 10 built-in, but it hasn’t released the update for older phones just yet. If you have a Windows phone, though, there’s a good chance you can upgrade it to Windows 10 now, even if your cellular carrier is planning to delay or block the update.

For years, the Windows Insider Preview Program has let Windows phone users get the latest Windows operating system for their phones without requiring the approval of any cellular carrier. The Insider Program lets you upgrade to Windows 10 and immediately jump off the preview builds, sticking to the stable builds.

Warning: As Microsoft itself will warn you, this process isn’t designed for average users and may not be completely stable. You may not want to do this on your primary phone. Microsoft’s Windows Device Recovery Tool can help you reset your phone’s software if you encounter a problem, but it doesn’t work for all Windows phones.

Step One: Check If Windows 10 Supports Your Phone

This trick only works if the Windows Insider Preview program — and Windows 10 itself — will support your Windows phone. Microsoft provides a list of phones that support the preview program here. Microsoft supports a wide variety of Microsoft Lumia (formerly Nokia Lumia) phones. Right now, the only non-Lumia phones that will work are the HTC One (M8) for Windows and the LG Lancet.

These phones are supported if they have 8 GB of storage or more, and if they originally shipped with Windows Phone 8.1 installed on them.

Microsoft also now offers an “Upgrade Advisor” app for Windows phones. You can install this on your Windows phone to get a better idea of whether your phone will be eligible for the Windows 10 upgrade and what you’ll need to do. Unfortunately, even some phones that will be eligible for the full Windows 10 upgrade may not be allowed into the preview program.

Step Two: Join the Insider Program With Your Microsoft Account

As with the Insider builds of Windows 10 for the desktop, these builds require you to be part of the Windows Insider Program. To join the program — yes, it’s free — head to Microsoft’s Windows Insider website, sign in with the Microsoft account you use on your Windows phone, and join the program.

Just joining the program doesn’t mean your Windows PCs and phones will automatically get insider builds. You’ll still have to opt into insider preview builds on each device individually. Joining the program means you gain the ability to opt into those preview builds on each device, if you choose to.

How to upgrade your windows phone to windows 10 now

Step Three: Install the Windows Insider App on Your Phone

Before continuing, you might want to connect your phone to a Wi-Fi network, to avoid using a lot of mobile data downloading a large operating system update. You might also want to connect it to a charger to ensure it doesn’t run out of battery power halfway through the update.

To get started, grab your Windows phone and open the Store by tapping the “Store” tile. Search for “Windows Insider.” Tap the “Windows Insider” app by Microsoft Corporation and install it.

Once it’s installed, open the app and tap “Get Preview Builds.” It’ll walk you through the process of downloading Windows 10 to your device and updating it.

How to upgrade your windows phone to windows 10 now

You’ll likely want to choose the “Insider Slow” builds, which will give you more stable builds of Windows 10. “Insider Fast” will give you more bleeding-edge builds with newer features, but they’ll generally be more unstable as they haven’t seen as much testing.

After you do, Microsoft will attempt to scare you off one last time, emphasizing that this is still unstable code and it provides no guarantees it will work properly. After you tap “Accept,” your phone will reboot and be on the insider preview channel for updates.

How to upgrade your windows phone to windows 10 now

Your phone will start installing updates on its own. If you open the “Settings” app and tap “Phone Update” under “Update + Backup,” you’ll see that the phone is downloading the update.

When it’s done downloading, you’ll be asked if you want to install the update and told this process should take five to ten minutes. This process will actually take quite a bit longer than that, depending on how fast your phone is. You can leave your phone alone and it will finish the upgrade on its own. When it’s done, it will boot back up into Windows 10 Mobile.

How to upgrade your windows phone to windows 10 now

Step Four (Optional): Opt Out of Future Preview Builds

Once you’ve installed the Windows 10 insider preview builds, you can either keep updating to newer builds as they come out, or tell your phone to leave the program and use the most stable builds of Windows 10 possible.

To do this, open the Windows Insider app on your phone with Windows 10 installed. If you need to reinstall the app, you can re-download it from the Store.

Tap the ellipsis menu — that’s the “…” button — at the bottom of the app. When the menu appears, tap “Leave Program” and sign in with your Microsoft account to confirm your choice. Click “Continue” to confirm you want to leave the program. When the stable version of Windows 10 catches up with the software already on your phone, you’ll be put back to the normal stable channel of Windows 10. Your phone won’t continually upgrade to unstable builds.

After Windows 10 becomes stable, Microsoft’s new update process means carriers won’t be able to delay or block security, stability, and even feature updates — something carriers often do for Andorid phones. But the upgrade to Windows 10 can be delayed and blocked, and many cellular carriers will likely get in the way.

If you have an older Windows phone lying around — or can pick one up for cheap — you can use this trick to get Windows 10 on it today and see where Microsoft’s smartphone platform is going in the future. You won’t get every feature, however — in particular, the Continuum feature that sees a Windows 10 phone powering a PC desktop requires a new phone that explicitly supports this feature.

Summary

This article describes how system administrators can upgrade eligible Windows Phone 8.1 devices to Windows 10 Mobile using Mobile Device Management (MDM).

If you are not a system administrator, see the Windows 10 Mobile Upgrade & Updates page for details about updating your Windows 8.1 Mobile device to Windows 10 Mobile using the Upgrade Advisor.

Upgrading with MDM

The Windows Phone 8.1 to Windows 10 Mobile upgrade uses an “opt-in” or “seeker” model. To determine if the device is eligible for an upgrade with MDM, see the How to determine whether an upgrade is available for a device topic in this article. An eligible device must opt-in to be offered the upgrade. For consumers, the Windows 10 Mobile Upgrade Advisor app is available from the Windows Store to perform the opt-in. For Enterprises, Microsoft is offering a centralized management solution through MDM that can push a management policy to each eligible device to perform the opt-in.

If you use a list of allowed applications (app allow listing) with MDM, verify that system applications are allow-listed before you upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile. Also, be aware that there are known issues with app allow-lists that could adversely affect the device after you upgrade.

Some enterprises might want to control the availability of the Windows 10 Mobile upgrade to their users. With the opt-in model, the enterprise can block the Upgrade Advisor app to prevent their users from upgrading prematurely. For more information about how to restrict the Upgrade Advisor app, see the How to restrict the Upgrade Advisor app section in this article. Enterprises that have restricted the Upgrade Advisor app can use the solution described in this article to select the upgrade timing on a per-device basis.

More information

To provide enterprises with a solution that’s independent of the Upgrade Advisor, a new registry key in the registry configuration service provider (CSP) is available. A special GUID key value is defined. When Microsoft Update (MU) detects the presence of the registry key value on a device, any available upgrade will be made available to the device.

Prerequisites

  • Windows Phone 8.1 device with an available upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile.
  • Device connected to Wi-Fi or cellular network to perform scan for upgrade.
  • Device is already enrolled with an MDM session.
  • Device is able to receive the management policy.
  • MDM is capable of pushing the management policy to devices. Minimum version numbers for some popular MDM providers that support this solution are: InTune: 5.0.5565, AirWatch: 8.2, Mobile Iron: 9.0.

Instructions for the MDM server

The registry CSP is used to push the GUID value to the following registry key for which the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) Device Management (DM) client has Read/Write access and for which the Device Update service has Read access.

The complete SyncML command for the solution is as follows. Note: The SyncML may vary, depending on your MDM solution.

Microsoft announced this week that it’s (finally) rolling out the Windows 10 Mobile upgrade for Windows Phone 8.1, but it’s not available for all models yet.

Windows Phone users have been anxiously waiting for the official Windows 10 Mobile upgrade to be rolled out for Windows Phone 8.1. Microsoft announced this week that it’s (finally) rolling it out, but there’s a caveat, it’s not available for all Windows Phone models yet.

Here’s a look at what phones it is available for and how to perform the upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile

Note: At the time of this writing only select models of Windows Phone can be upgraded to Windows 10 Mobile. According to Microsoft they include:

Upgrade Windows Phone 8.1 to Windows 10 Mobile

Of course, before starting any of this, just like with any device upgrade, make sure you have your data backed up in the event something goes wrong.

Make sure to have at least 1.4 GB or more local storage space (not your SD card).

Keep your phone plugged into a power source and connected to Wi-Fi throughout the upgrade process. For this article, I’m using a Lumia 640.

Upgrading to Windows 10 is a bit different than checking for updates. First, you’ll need to install the UpdateAdvisor app on your handset. We covered this app previously in our article: Prepare Your Windows Phone for the Windows 10 Mobile Upgrade.

Launch the app and just follow the onscreen instructions.

After the first update completes, you’re phone will be on build 10586.107. So, to make sure you have the latest version go back to Settings > Update & Security > Phone Update and install build 10586.164.

If you don’t want to wait for it to come your way, you might consider joining the Windows 10 Mobile Insider program as you’ll have the same bits as this upgrade provides. However, there’s a lot more involved going that route. If you haven’t been in the Insider program yet, just be patient and wait until it arrives.

It’s also worth noting that Microsoft confirmed via Twitter that phones with 512 MB of RAM will not get the upgrade. Apparently Microsoft wants to upgrade phones with enough hardware power to make the most out of what Windows 10 Mobile has to offer.

However, this seems a bit odd since I’ve been running Windows 10 Mobile Insider builds on a Lumia 635 that only has 512 MB of RAM. So, hopefully, we’ll get further clarification on this from the company…something more than just a tweet.
