How to use bing’s background of the day as your ubuntu wallpaper

You’re a Linux user, so naturally you’re not Microsoft’s biggest fan. But even you have to admit: Microsoft’s Bing has really nice photos on the home page.

You like looking at those pictures, but refuse to use Bing. What’s a Linux user to do? Set up their desktop wallpaper to use those pretty pictures, that’s what! This gives you all the pretty pictures with none of the actual Binginess. And more than one open source enthusiast has designed tools for doing just this. Let’s highlight two options: one that’s easy to use, but has a watermark, and one that’s a littler trickier, but is watermark-free.

Option One: Bing Wallpaper (with a Watermark)

Our first selection automatically runs when you log into Ubuntu, and checks Bing every four hours for new wallpapers. The program works in GNOME, Cinnamon, Unity and Xfce environments.

Installing is easy, if you know how to install software from third party PPA. If you don’t know how, don’t worry, just open up the Terminal and run these three commands, in order:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:whizzzkid/bingwallpaper

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install bingwallpaper

The first command adds the Whizzzkid PPA, which offers the software we want. The second command updates our package manager, so we can see the new software. The third command installs bingwallpaper, the package that we want.

This program, once installed, will run in the background every time you log into Ubuntu. Basically, once it’s installed, your wallpaper will be set automatically, without you having to do anything.

The program won’t run right after you install it, however: to do that, press Alt+F2, then type “bingwallpaper.”

Your wallpaper will automatically change to today’s Bing background. Enjoy!

The only downside: It’ll show the Bing watermark over your image. I’m not thrilled about that, to be honest.

Option Two: Bing Desktop Wallpaper Changer (No Watermark)

If you like this idea, but aren’t thrilled by the Bing watermark over the wallpaper, I suggest a Python script called Bing Desktop Wallpaper Changer instead. It’s slightly trickier to install, but it also starts itself at boot and also automatically downloads new Bing wallpapers every day. You just can’t install this with Ubuntu’s package manager.

Instead, you need to download the latest version of the script, then head to your Downloads folder and extract the ZIP file.

How to use bing’s background of the day as your ubuntu wallpaper

Next, fire up the Terminal. First, we’ll move to the folder we just created by extracting the script:

And now we’re going to run the installer script.

sudo ./installer.sh –install

You will be asked whether to install the script to /opt, which you should do unless you specifically do not want to.

How to use bing’s background of the day as your ubuntu wallpaper

You’ll also be asked about whether you want to create an alias for the program, and whether you want the script to automatically start at boot. We recommend you do both—you can always uninstall it later.

When the process is complete, your wallpaper will automatically change to the latest Bing wallpaper, sans watermark.

How to use bing’s background of the day as your ubuntu wallpaper

To uninstall, you’ll need to run the installer again, this time with the –uninstall modifier:

sudo ./installer –uninstall

This is slightly more complicated, but the lack of watermark makes it all worthwhile. Enjoy your new wallpapers every day!

I have never seen someone use Bing as their choice of search engine. But there are many out there that love to use the Bing image of the day as their desktop wallpaper. This is why there are so many apps for desktops that let users do just that. On the surface, BingWall is a similar app. It automatically sets new Bing wallpapers on your Ubuntu desktop every day. There’s one way you can enjoy refreshed wallpapers on Ubuntu desktop through automatic wallpaper change.

It’s a task that has previously been done by small GNOME shell extensions to cron job to scripts. That’s to say it’s not a very difficult task. Once BingWall is installed, it lets you download Bing’s featured photo and set it as the desktop background. The app is available as a Snap package so it can be installed on any Linux desktop, including Ubuntu.

BingWall does have a few nifty features that make it one of the better options available out there.

Get New Bing Wallpapers on Ubuntu

BingWall is a relatively newer app. This gives it the advantage of being up-to-date, working, and maintained. The same can’t be said for some of the other options. Bing API changes are rather frequent. This results in similar Bing wallpaper apps stop working or becoming buggy.

Many similar software programs run in the background and provide no UI or indication. BingWall does and its UI is simple and straightforward. The developer says the app has been designed for the GNOME desktop but is built-in Qt. The app lets you view the current bing image of the day for ten different countries.

How to use bing’s background of the day as your ubuntu wallpaper

It also lets you download these wallpapers in easily accessible locations on your desktop. Wallpapers can be browsed and set from within the app as well. To add a cherry on top, the app also supports a dark theme.

Install BingWall

If you’re using anything above Ubuntu 16.0 LTS, you can install BingWall from the Snapcraft store. Alternatively, you can use the command below in a terminal to do the same.

If you’re using an older version of Ubuntu, you’ll need to install Snap manually. It’s as simple as entering the command below in a terminal.

Once snap is installed, you can use the first command to install BingWall.

A lot of folks love using Bing’s image of the day as their desktop wallpaper, a task that the app we’re looking at today makes incredibly easy on Ubuntu.

Now, this idea isn’t new; I think I’ve written about every Bing wallpaper app ever created for Linux at one time or another. From cron jobs and python scripts through to GNOME Shell extensions and fully-fledged desktop apps.

On paper BingWall, the subject of this post, looks no different. Once installed it lets you download Bing’s featured photo of the day and set it as your desktop background.

So far, so same-y.

But this app has a few tricks up its sleeve that make it a touch more versatile that similar tools I’ve mentioned in the past.

Another Bing Wallpaper App for Ubuntu

The biggest selling point of this Bing wallpaper app over other Bing wallpaper apps is that it’s up-to-date. As in working. As in maintained. A lot of the Bing wallpaper tools featured on this site have fail to keep pace with Bing API changes so regularly break.

BingWall has a simple, straightforward UI — that it has a UI at all is important; many similar utilities run in the background with no visible indication. And although designed for use on the GNOME Shell desktop the app is built in Qt.

Using the tool you can view the Bing image of the day for 10 different countries because, trivia time, the image shown on the homepage actually differs based on your location.

  • View the Bing photo of the day for 10 countries
  • Downloads images and save them to an accessible location
  • Browse/set images as wallpapers from inside the app
  • Dark theme support

Pretty solid feature set, overall.

You can install BingWall on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and above from the Snap Store by clicking this button:

Alternatively, to install BingWall on Ubuntu from the command line, run:

Once installed, launch BingWall to sift through most recent Bing images of the day from your preferred search engine country, and click on the monitor section to make them your new desktop wallpaper.

How to use bing’s background of the day as your ubuntu wallpaper

While it’s arguably true that your choice of computer operating system (Windows, Linux, or Mac OS) says a lot about you, there’s something else computer-related that reflects your personality: your desktop wallpaper. For example, having a photo of your parents, wife, or baby on your desktop conveys that family comes first for you, while that of a beautiful landscape reveals your love of nature.

Personally, I don’t use Microsoft’s Bing search engine a lot. But one thing I do like about Bing is the ever-changing background of the website, which in most cases is a beautifully captured real-life image. I am sure many of you would like to have these images as your desktop wallpapers but would agree that it’s a bit cumbersome to download a new image daily and then set it as wallpaper.

What if I told you there is a way to make the whole process automated? Yes, your desktop wallpaper will change to the Bing photo of the day, every day, without you doing any hard work. In this article we will discuss how you can do this.

Note: all the commands and steps mentioned in this article have been tested on Ubuntu 16.04.

Bing Desktop Wallpaper Changer

The tool that automatically sets the Bing photo of the day as your Ubuntu desktop wallpaper is basically a Python script developed by Mr. Utkarsh Gupta. The script – which is compatible with Linux distributions running the Gnome desktop environment – can be set in a way that it runs automatically at the startup, making sure you always get to see the latest Bing photo on your desktop.

Download, Install, and Setup

Downloading and installation of the script is easy – all you have to do is to head to the project’s Github page and download the package in .zip format. Once downloaded, just extract the archive and run the main.py script.

However, before you go ahead and execute the script, you have to make sure that all the dependencies are installed on your system. For that, run the following two commands:

If the above commands are successful, you can launch the tool by running the following command in the directory where the main.py script is kept.

Although this works, our aim is to make the process completely automated. So for that, execute the following command:

In the window that appears, click the “Add” button to add the script as a startup application.

How to use bing’s background of the day as your ubuntu wallpaper

That’s it. Once you’re done with this, you’ll see that your desktop wallpaper will change to the Bing photo of the day every day.

In my case, after I was through with all the above-mentioned steps, I executed the script manually to quickly see if it worked. Unsurprisingly, it did and my desktop wallpaper was changed.

How to use bing’s background of the day as your ubuntu wallpaper

I even cross-verified that it is actually the Bing photo of the day by quickly opening the Bing home page.

An important thing worth mentioning here is that the script is written in a way that it tries to match your locale to one of the supported Bing Market areas, falling back to “en-US” if it fails to do so. However, if you know Python basics, you can easily override the current Bing market detection by setting your preferred market in the script.

Conclusion

From what I experienced, the script is easy to install and use, and more importantly does what is promises. Of course, you can extend it to add more features provided you know the Python language. The project’s GitHub page contains a list of To Do points towards the end, so you can take a look at that as well to get an idea about what else may be added to the script in the future.

I did not switch my O/S from Windows to Linux to now go back and use a Microsoft product for anything. KDE allows the user to setup a slide show of saved images that changes the background every so many minutes. There are also native Linux applications that do the same thing.

Each day Microsoft’s search engine Bing presents us with beautiful, high-quality photographs as part of their “Image of the day.” If you’re like me, you’ve probably wanted to make the images featured in “Image of the day” your wallpaper on the Linux desktop. In this guide, we’ll go over how to do just that.

Method 1 – BingWall

BingWall is a Snap app that can download Bing images of the day and set them as the current desktop wallpaper on most Linux desktop environments. Follow the installation instructions below to get BingWall working on your PC.

Installing BingWall

As mentioned before, BingWall is a Snap app, so the only way to get it working on a Linux system is by going through the Snap Store. However, if you want to interact with the Snap Store on Linux, the Snapd runtime must be installed. Follow this guide on the subject to get it working.

Note: BingWall does not work on XFCE4, Mate, KDE Plasma 5, or any non-Gnome based desktop environment. It will also not work on tiling window managers like i3, etc.

Once the Snapd runtime is up and running on your Linux PC, the BingWall application is easily installed in a Linux terminal window with the following snap install command below.

When the BingWall application is done installing on your Linux system, open the program via the app menu on the desktop.

Using BingWall to set Bing’s image of the day as wallpaper

Set Bing’s image of the day as the wallpaper with BingWall by following the step-by-step instructions below.

Step 1: Ensure that you are running Gnome Shell, Cinnamon, Budgie, or another Gnome-based Linux desktop.

Step 2: Inside of the BingWall application, look at the wallpaper slider at the bottom of the app. Use the left/right arrow buttons to sort through available Bing images.

Step 3: Select the Bing image you’d like to make as your wallpaper. Click on the wallpaper in the monitor icon to apply the wallpaper, and it should automatically appear on the desktop.

Want to download a Bing image to save for later? Select your image and click on the download button to download it to your PC.

Method 2 – SetBingWallpaper app

If BingWall doesn’t do it for you, another easy way to set Bing’s “Image of the day” as the wallpaper on your Linux desktop is an app called “Set Bing Wallpaper.” It supports most modern Linux desktop environments except for Gnome Shell. To get SetBingWallpaper working on your Linux PC, follow the installation instructions below.

Installing SetBingWallpaper

The SetBingWallpaper program works on current releases of Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, as well as other Ubuntu-based, Fedora-based, and Debian-based Linux operating systems.

Ubuntu

First, download the latest DEB release of SetBingWallpaper to your Ubuntu PC using the wget command below.

After downloading SetBingWallpaper to your Ubuntu PC, the installation can begin. Using the Apt command below, install the program.

Debian

To get SetBingWallpaper working on Debian Linux, do the following. First, download the DEB package using the wget command below.

Next, use the dpkg command to install the SetBingWallpaper app on your Debian PC.

Finally, correct any dependency errors that may occur.

Fedora

The installation of SetBingWallpaper on Fedora Linux starts by using the wget command to download the latest Ubuntu/Debian release of the program.

After downloading the DEB package, use the Dnf command to install the Alien package conversion tool.

Use alien -rvc to convert the SetBingWallpaper DEB to a Fedora-compatible RPM package.

Next, install all Fedora dependencies required to run SetBingWallpaper.

Finally, install the RPM package into Fedora with the rpm command. Be sure to use –force to bypass the false “package conflict” error that will arise.

Using SetBingWallpaper to set Bing’s image of the day as wallpaper

With SetBingWallpaper installed on your Linux PC, launch it by searching for “SetBingWallpaper” in the app menu. Then, follow the step-by-step instructions below to learn how to use SetBingWallpaper to set Bing’s image of the day as your wallpaper.

Step 1: Look to the system-tray for the yellow Bing icon and right-click on it.

Step 2: In the right-click menu, select “Settings” to access the app’s settings area.

Step 3: Find “Desktop Environment” and change it to the desktop environment you use. Close the settings window when done.

Probably the easiest thing to do would be to install variety. It is a wall-paper manager that really does an excellent job to change your wallpaper at the frequency you want.

Here are some of its settings:

  • the frequency of the download
  • the frequency of changing the image (once a day, at every reboot, every minute. )
  • where you want to download your images from
  • where you want to store them on your computer
  • quotes (either automatically or from a source)
  • a nice clock.

There is also a setting to run it at login. If you enable that and then add your bing image of the day url ( http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=picture+of+the+day&qpvt=picture+of+the+day&FORM=IGRE ?), you are all set.

It can be found in the software center and it has a 5* rating!

    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:whizzzkid/bingwallpaper

    sudo apt-get update

    sudo apt-get install bingwallpaper

How to use bing’s background of the day as your ubuntu wallpaper

Nikmati!

How to use bing’s background of the day as your ubuntu wallpaper

Opsi Kedua: Pengalih Wallpaper Desktop Bing (Tanpa Tanda Air)

How to use bing’s background of the day as your ubuntu wallpaper

How to use bing’s background of the day as your ubuntu wallpaper

Nikmati wallpaper baru Anda setiap hari!

How to use bing’s background of the day as your ubuntu wallpaper

    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:whizzzkid/bingwallpaper

    sudo apt-get update

    sudo apt-get install bingwallpaper

Pirma komanda prideda Whizzzkid PPA, kuris siūlo norimą programinę įrangą. Antroji komanda atnaujina paketų tvarkytuvę, todėl galime pamatyti naują programinę įrangą. Trečioji komanda įdiegia bingwallpaper, paketą, kurį mes norime.

Ši programa, kai įdiegta, paleidžiama fone kiekvieną kartą prisijungus prie Ubuntu. Iš esmės, kai tik jis bus įdiegtas, jūsų ekrano užsklanda bus nustatyta automatiškai, be to, nieko nereikės daryti.

How to use bing’s background of the day as your ubuntu wallpaper

Jūsų tapetai automatiškai pasikeis į šiandienos “Bing” foną. Mėgautis!

How to use bing’s background of the day as your ubuntu wallpaper

Antroji parinktis: “Bing Desktop Wallpaper Changer” (be vandens ženklo)

Vietoj to turite atsisiųsti naujausią scenarijaus versiją, tada eikite į savo atsisiuntimų aplanką ir ištraukite ZIP failą.

Tada paleiskite terminalą. Pirma, mes persikelsime į ką tik sukurtą aplanką, išskleidę scenarijų:

Ir dabar mes ketiname paleisti diegimo scenarijų.

    sudo ./installer.sh –install

Jums bus klausiama, ar įdiegti scenarijų į / opt, kuriuos turėtumėte atlikti, nebent jūs konkrečiai nenorite.

How to use bing’s background of the day as your ubuntu wallpaper

Kai procesas bus baigtas, ekrano užsklanda bus automatiškai pakeista į naujausią “Bing” ekrano užsklandą, be vandens ženklo.

How to use bing’s background of the day as your ubuntu wallpaper

Norėdami pašalinti, turėsite paleisti diegimo programą dar kartą, šį kartą su -instalavimo modifikatoriumi:

    sudo ./installer –uninstall
