A watermark is a faded background image that displays behind the text in a document. You can use them to indicate a document’s state (confidential, draft, etc.), add a subtle company logo, or even for a bit of artistic flair. PowerPoint doesn’t have a built-in watermark feature like Word, but you can still add them with a text box.

It’s not quite as easy to add watermarks to PowerPoint as it is to Microsoft Word. However, you can add watermark text to the background of individual slides or all slides at once using the Master Slide function.

We’re going to look at how to add watermark text to all slides in a presentation by using the Master Slide feature. If you only want to add watermark text to an individual slide, you can skip the steps for going to the Slide Master.

First, switch to the “View” tab on the PowerPoint ribbon.

Click the “Slide Master” button. This brings up the master slide layout for all of the slides in your deck.

If you’re only inserting watermark text on a single slide, this is where you’d start; select the individual slide on which you want to insert the text rather than going to the slide master.

To insert the text or image you want to use as your watermark, click the “Insert” tab.

Click the “Text Box” button.

A text box will appear on your slide.

Type whatever you would like in that text box.

After you have typed what you want to, you can mess with the formatting of the text box. You might want to drag the curved arrow to rotate the text, like so:

Or, you might want to head on over to the “Format” tab on the main PowerPoint ribbon to change settings like color, transformations, and more. It’s up to you!

Finally, decide whether you want the watermark to appear behind everything else on the slide. To do so, click the “Send Backward” button on the “Format” tab and choose “Send to Back.”

Once you’ve got your text the way you want it, it’s time to exit the master slide view if that’s what you’re using. Switch over to the “View” tab and then click “Normal” to go back to the normal slideshow view.

You’ll now see your watermark text on your slides.

If you inserted the text onto your master slide, any new slides you insert will have the same watermark text on them.

How to Remove a Watermark from PowerPoint

If you’d like to remove your watermark from PowerPoint, all you have to do is delete that text box.

Select the slide with the watermark (or head back over to the Master Slide view if that’s where you inserted the text box).

Click the text box.

And then hit “Delete” to get rid of it. Your slides will be watermark free!

3. You can drag the dotted frame to adjust location, size and direction. What’s more, you can click it and then go to Format (Drawing Tools) tab, expand the drop-down menu of Text Fill, choose any color you like, or hit GradientMore Gradients… to evoke the Format Shape pane.

4. Here you can change the Transparency of the Text Fill as well as Text Outline. It will make the WordArt you inserted more like a watermark.

5. If you don’t want a pure text watermark, you can choose a shape from the list of Shapes in Insert tab. The way to adjust the inserted shape is almost the same. Furthermore, you can combine a shape and a WordArt to make it more informative.

6. After that, you can hit Close Master View in Slide Master tab to quit it.

7. You can see the watermark can’t be modified or deleted by normal means now, no matter it’s created by insert shape or insert WordArt. If you truly want to remove it, the only way is to enable Slide Master again, select the watermark and press [Del] key to delete it.

What is a watermark?

If you want your watermark to appear on all of your slides, then you will want to add it on the Parent slide as pictured below.

If instead you only want your watermark on a few individual slides, you’ll want to add it to just the child slide layouts in question where you want it to appear in your presentation.

Q2. Do you want an editable Watermark?

That is, do you want to be able to edit the watermark in the future?

This will determine whether you directly add it to your slide or whether you add it as a slide background as an image (explained below).

Navigate to your Slide Master

Regardless of what kind of watermark you want to create for your slides, you want to do this on your Slide Master.

That’s because when you properly add it your slide master, it will then show up on ALL of the slides within your presentation (with a few exceptions discussed below).

That not only means that you can add it once, and have it show up everywhere within your presentation, it also means that if you later want to change or edit your watermark, you can edit it in one place, and have those edits reflected throughout your entire presentation.

To open up your slide master in PowerPoint, simply:

  1. Navigate to the View Tab
  2. Select Slide Master

You can also jump to your slide master by holding the Shift key and clicking the Normal Icon at the bottom of your PowerPoint work space (a hidden PowerPoint shortcut).

To create a text watermark on your Parent slide, follow these steps.

  1. Insert a Text Box (from the insert tab)
  2. Type the word DRAFT
  3. Change the font (size, style, color) as per your choice
  4. Drag your text to where you want it to be on your slide
  5. Send the image to back (so it’s behind your content)

To send to back, simply right-click the text watermark you created and select Send to Back.

To add a picture watermark to your Parent slide (so it’s not editable).

Insert an image or photo (like your company logo).

Resize and orient your picture where you want it to be.

Send it to the back (so that it shows up behind your content).

On top of that, you can also choose to washout or recolor your logo if you want.

To washout or recolor your photo, simply:

  1. Select your photo
  2. Navigate to the Drawing Tools Format tab
  3. Select the Color drop down
  4. Select Washout (or a grey color)

You can see the difference between the original and the washed out logo below.

There are a variety of other picture formatting options you can choose, but I think the washout effect works best for marking your slides like this.

If you don’t want someone to be able to edit your watermark, you’ll want to add it as a slide background image to your slide. To do that, simply:

  1. Ctrl + C to Copy the elements you want to add as the watermark to your slide background.
  2. Right-click off the edge of your slide and select Format Background
  3. Select Picture or texture fill
  4. Choose Clipboard

After you’ve added it as your slide background image, you can select and delete the orginal graphic you used (text or picture).

If you like, you can even duplicate lots of little draft watermarks and add them all to your slide as pictured below.

Here you will be greeted by two different options. Primarily, you can insert a picture of your choice which is stored in your device. For this, you need to click on ‘Insert’ followed by ‘Pictures’ and ultimately ‘Picture from File..’ Next you will have to browse the graphic file from its stored location and insert it into your slide. Alternatively, you can also select the ‘Picture Browser’ option.

  • If you are not happy with the size or positioning of the watermark, then you can move it to a specific corner so that it doesn’t meddle with the text or graphic contents of your slide. It is advisable to work with the corner selection handle as the ideal proportions of your picture do not get meddled with in this case. It also becomes super easy to move the watermark by simply dragging it to your preferred location.
  • You can format the watermark as per your liking to make it less distracting for your viewers. For doing this, you need to click on the picture and this shall open the ‘Picture Format’ tab. Next you need to click on ‘Color’ and this will open a drop-down list with various degrees of saturation and color tone. You can check out the preview of a particular slide by hovering over the color variation. If you are not happy with the default options provided in the list, then you can customize the same by clicking on ‘More Variations.’
  • If you are not much in the favour of graphic watermarks, then you can proceed with a simple text one. For this, you need to click on ‘Insert’ followed by ‘Text Box.’ Once the box appears, you will just have to fill in your required content and do the necessary formatting.
  • While dealing with text watermarks, you might feel the necessity of altering its positioning so that it doesn’t appear on top of your normal slide text. For this you will just have to select the watermark and navigate to ‘Home’ followed by ‘Arrange.’ If your watermark is covering the text, then you will have to select the option ‘Send Back.’ Doing this will cause the watermark to move behind the text and even stay behind all new elements which you might add in to the slide.

In this article, I’m going to show you how to add a watermark to your images using the PowerPoint. So let’s get started.

Typically, adding a watermark to an image using PowerPoint includes three steps:

  1. Choosing and adding the text that you want to use as a watermark.
  2. Formatting and making it transparent.
  3. Grouping and exporting the image.

If you want to add a watermark to some pictures, you don’t need to repeat all the steps above. Instead, you only need to set up the watermark for the first image. For other pictures, it’s easy to reuse the same watermark that you created for the first image.

All you need to do is:

  1. Ungroup the watermark.
  2. Change the image.
  3. Group and export the new image.

Steps To Add A Watermark To Images Using PowerPoint

Step #1: Navigate to File -> New and choose “ Blank Presentation ” to open a new and blank PowerPoint file. You can also do the same thing by pressing Ctrl + N .

Step #2: Choose the “ Insert ” tab and click on “ Picture ” to add the image you want to add the watermark to. Next, browse for the image and insert it into the PowerPoint file.

Step #11: You can now save the object as an image by right clicking on it and then choose “ Save as Picture “. Select the location where you want to store it, enter a new name for it, and then click “ Save “.

What about adding the same watermark to other images?

Insert A Watermark To Multiple Images Using PowerPoint

When I say “multiple”, I mean adding the same watermark that you have created and formatting it to other images, one by one. It doesn’t mean add watermark to multiple images at once. In order to do this, you have to find another software.

So, if you want to add a watermark to other images, as I explained above, follow these instructions:

Step #1: From step #11 above, press Ctrl + A , navigate to the “ Picture Tools ” tab. Next, click on the “ Group ” icon and choose “ Ungroup “.

Step #2: Choose only the picture and then press “ Delete ” to remove it from the PowerPoint file. The image will be deleted, but the watermark still remains in its current position.

Step #3: Navigate to the “ Insert ” tab. From the “ Images ” group, click on “ Picture ” to add another picture.

Note: If you don’t see the watermark after adding the new image, go to “ Picture Tools ” tab, choose “ Send Backward ” from the “ Arrange ” group.

Step #4: Repeat step #9, #10 and #11 above to group, export your new image, with the watermark.

Thanks for the question. In this post you will learn how to insert or embed watermarks in Office 2016 applications like PowerPoint and Excel (you could potentially use similar techniques in Word and Visio). Note that you can use the same procedure in order to either add or remove a watermark.

There are several use cases that can be accomplished by inserting watermarks into Office files:

  1. Indicating the document status (“Draft”,”Released”, etc’)
  2. Specifying the confidentiality level of a document
  3. Indicating the copyrights of the file content
  4. Indicating that the content being published is a sample

So without further ado, let’s learn how to use watermarks in Office applications.

  • Next, right click on the text and select Format text effects.

  • In Excel a picture watermark cannot be inserted, as the values are entered in the cell the picture transparency cannot bring the cells front to make it visible.

    Finally, decide whether you want the watermark to appear behind everything else on the slide. To do so, click the “Send Backward” button on the “Format” tab and choose “Send to Back.”

    Once you’ve got your text the way you want it, it’s time to exit the master slide view if that’s what you’re using. Switch over to the “View” tab and then click “Normal” to go back to the normal slideshow view.

    You’ll now see your watermark text on your slides.

    If you inserted the text onto your master slide, any new slides you insert will have the same watermark text on them.

    How to Remove a Watermark from PowerPoint

    If you’d like to remove your watermark from PowerPoint, all you have to do is delete that text box.

    Select the slide with the watermark (or head back over to the Master Slide view if that’s where you inserted the text box).

    Click the text box.

    Every computer user must use Microsoft office. So you may have a Microsoft office. If you have Microsoft office, you must have PowerPoint. You can see the list of Microsoft office applications. If you had PowerPoint, you don’t have to use any other software to watermark photos.

    How to watermark photos in PowerPoint?

    Open PowerPoint. You can open it by going into Programs. Or right-click on the desktop and go to “New”. Click on “Microsoft Office PowerPoint presentation”.

    Click on “Click to add first slide”.

    How to use watermarks in powerpoint

    1. Click “Insert” on the top menu.
    2. Click “Picture” as shown in the above screenshot. You will get a small window where you can browse your computer folders to select the photo. Select your photo.
    3. Now click “WordArt” and select any style from available options. Type your brand name or anything which has to be a watermark. Here I have written “Watermark photos in PowerPoint”.

    Select your watermark word or sentence. Just click on the sentence to select and drag your mouse. You can see the “Format” tab in the top menu.

    How to use watermarks in powerpoint

    1. Click on the “Format” tab in the top menu.
    2. Click on a small symbol right to “WordArt Styles” which shows that in the above screenshot. You will see the “Format text Effects” window.
    3. Select the first option which is “Text Fill”. Select any color from the right-side options.
    4. Adjust transparency to any percentage, you will see a change in your watermark. Here I have adjusted to 47%. It may be different according to your picture color.
    5. Select the second option in the “Format text Effects” window which is “Text Outline”. Select any color. Adjust transparency to your required percentage. Now you will see a good-looking watermark.

    You can also try the remaining options from the “Format text Effects” window. You can use 3-D Rotation for a better look. Now your watermark is ready. You need to save this as a picture. For that follow the below procedure.

    • Click on the watermark sentence to select a watermark.
    • Hold the Ctrl button and click on the photo to select photos. Now you have selected all elements from your work.

    How to use watermarks in powerpoint

    Click on “Group”. You will see the “Format” tab under “Drawing Tools”. You will see three options. Select the first one which is “Group”. Everything is shown in the above screenshot.

    Right-click on the picture and click on “Save as Picture”. You can save it in any format. It is better to save in jpg or png. Now your photo is ready with a watermark.
