Things You’ll Need

  • Large paper grocery sack
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Crayons or markers
  • Glue
  • Glitter
  • Large safety pin(s)

There are many unique ways to create fairy or angel wings, some requiring a good amount of money and artistic talent. Making a pair of wings doesn’t have to be a difficult or expensive endeavor. Whether you are planning a birthday party or a Halloween costume, a few simple supplies can make budget-friendly paper wings that will satisfy even the most demanding little fairies and angels.

Instructions

Cut the brown paper bag down one side and across the bottom so it becomes one large piece of paper. Fold the bag in half.

Draw your fairy or angel wing onto the bag starting at the fold. The folded edge will be the middle and narrowest part of the wings.

Cut out the wing, taking care not to cut the folded side. Open the bag into a pair of wings connected in the middle.

Decorate the wings with crayons, markers, glue and glitter. For a softer look, decorate angel wings with feathers or cotton balls that have been pulled apart.

Allow the wings to dry completely. Attach the wings to a costume or clothing with large safety pins.

If making the wings is a birthday party activity and you are on a tight schedule, consider decorating with butterfly or flower stickers instead of glue and glitter. The guests can make them and wear them without worrying about wet glue.

If you are not sure how to draw the wings, practice on scrap paper. Create a pattern and trace it onto the bag.

Warnings

When using paper grocery sacks, keep the decorations to a minimum. Too much glitter and glue can weigh them down causing them to rip. For a sturdier set of wings, fold a piece of poster board in half and follow steps 2-5.

I was doubting whether to propose the kids to make some cardboard fairy wings.

I try to believe that stereotypes are not so much my thing, so when it gets to raising my kids I try to avoid a too “boy – girl” view on things. However this seems to be a fight I’m about to lose. I can stand on my head as much as I want: my son loves everything with wheels and my daughter loves pink, fairies, princesses and playing “house”. So when I asked Victoria to choose our next cardboard crafts activity, the choice for cardboard fairy wings was quickly made.

While I went to collect the cardboard, Victoria and Lukas were eager to start the play. They went ahead and started practicing some fairy-flying through the living room. I choose 2 big pieces of cardboard from some cardboard boxes. Despite the challenges posed by Elena(1,5) dancing on the cardboard, I managed after a while to cut the cardboard fairy wings out. I put paper tape on the places where paint would not stick, and the kids got to choose the colors they wanted to use for their cardboard fairy wings.

And surprise surprise…they chose pink and violet. I also added some glitter to make the wings look even more fairy like.

After painting one side, we put the cardboard fairy wings on the heater for them to dry faster. Though for Victoria that wasn’t going fast enough so she also tried to blow them dry. But after a while she gave up and decided she’ll better wait for her cardboard fairy wings to dry by themselves.

When both sides of the wings were painted and dried, I made some wholes in the back and used some ribbon to connected the cardboard wings to my little fairies.

And gosh I had some happy fairies flying around the house!

Making cardboard fairy wings is very easy and the kids and me had lots of fun playing with them, just that you need to be patient for the paint to dry 🙂

What did we learn from making our cardboard fairy wings:

  • Patience: we had to wait for each side of the wings to dry before we could go on with our play.
  • Basic color mixing: red + white= pink and red + blue = violet
  • Pretend play/ drama play: my two little fairies flew through the house and spread happiness all around 🙂

If your child is into fairies, then this printable fairy will also be fun to make. Also have a look at these easy to make fairy crowns. They fit very well with our cardboard wings don’t you think?

Update: Check on the blog of fun at home with kids how Asia took this cardboard fairy wings idea and gave her own twist to it!

Make your little girl’s day by crafting these simple fairy wings for her to wear while enjoying imaginary play. These homemade fairy wings will make a great addition to your little one’s fairy dress ups.

What you need

  • 2 x pairs of pink tights
  • Masking tape
  • Small piece of felt or scrap of fabric

  • Tulle puff or fake flower
  • Stick-on jewels and rhinestones
  • Hot glue gun
  • Needle and thread

Activity

Bend one wire coat hanger into the shape of a wing.

Do this to a second wire hanger as well and lay them on top of each other to see that they match up and are roughly identical in shape.

Place each wing on the table with the coat hanger hook facing inwards. Now twist each hook around the other to join your two wings together. This takes a bit of muscle but you should make sure they are:

  • secure enough to stay together when your fairy jumps and twirls
  • wound around tightly so that no sharp ends are sticking out.

To cover the gnarly wiry bit in the middle, use a small piece of felt or scrap of fabric. Wind it around and then secure it with masking tape to make a nice padded centre that won’t poke into your fairy’s back.

Cut both legs off a pair of tights.

Cover each hanger with a leg of the tights, gathering the extra fabric in the centre of the wings.

Secure the tightened fabric in place with masking tape at the centre of the wings and then wrap the extra tights fabric around the middle and tie it off. Trim the knot nice and neatly.

To cover the knot, place either a fake flower (from a discount shop) or a homemade tulle puff onto the centre of the join. You can sew it in place or use a hot glue gun.

Now use the other pair of tights to make arm holders for your wings. Just cut each leg off and attach it in an armhole-sized loop to either side of the centre join.

You can leave your fairy wings like that or you can decorate them with jewels and glitter. (For children aged under three, leave the wings simple and unadorned or be very careful with any small bits you use.)

Learn how to make fairy wings for Halloween, dress up, or pretend play! Indulge in a little fantasy with these beautiful wings. These surprisingly simple DIY fairy wings look as good as a store-bought pair, but come together in less time than it takes to drive to and from the shop.

What You Need:
2-4 metal wire hangers
Wire cutters
2 yards two-sided cotton, silk or gauzy fabric
2 15-inch-long, 2-inch wide strips of elastic
White craft glue
White chalk
What You Do:
You can choose from several shapes, such as long and narrow insect wings, fat and wide wings, curvy butterfly wings, or even feathery bird wings. Look at images online or sketch ideas ahead of time so you’re prepared when it’s time to choose a wing shape.
Cut and shape the wire to form your first wing. Use the first as your template for the second to make sure they match. To attach each end of the wing, glue them together, or wrap one end of the wire around the other using pliers. Just make sure there aren’t any sharp points sticking out!
Lay your fabric flat on the floor or work table, and smooth out any wrinkles.
Put your wire wings over the fabric and draw their outline on the fabric, at least 1 inch wider than the actual metal wings.
Spread glue around the edge of the metal and the extra edging of fabric, and fold the edge of the fabric over the wings. Spread it out so the glue affixes evenly and there are no wrinkles in the fabric.
Use a wet paper towel or cloth to wipe away any extra glue. Then leave 30 minutes for the glue to dry.
Lay the wings side by side, how you would like them to hang on your child’s back. Use excess fabric strips to form a rectangle that will hold the two wings together. Glue the fabric rectangle equally to each wing. You may want to reinforce this with hot glue or by sewing them together by hand. Again, allow time for any glue to dry.
Finally, turn the wings over to the front side to attach the straps your fairy can use to hold the wings on. They will go around her arms, just like she’s wearing a backpack. Attach the top of the straps on each side, where the middle strip of fabric meets each wing—you can use glue, pins, or sew them in place.
Have her stand in front of you and drape the wings across her back. Pin each strap so that it wraps around each shoulder and attaches under the arm, like a backpack strap. Make sure it’s tight enough to stay on while she moves, but not too tight to be uncomfortable. Also check that the wings each hang evenly and aren’t too low or high.
Have her take the wings off once they’re pinned, and either sew or glue the straps in place.
Make sure you leave enough time for all the glue to dry.
Now you’ve given your magic fairy her wings! Have her try them on and wear them around the house to make sure they are secure. Then get ready for Halloween night, or a fun-filled day of pretend play.
