How to make scanning big pictures easy with (freeware) microsoft ice

Scanning pics is a big enough pain, but oversize images can be a nightmare. Today, we’ll look at some tips at scanning huge images with smaller scanners, and how a bit of Microsoft freeware can make the process much easier.

You won’t see any Photoshop or even GIMP in our how-to today. HTG readers suggested this very excellent freeware, and it’ll make your life a lot easier if you ever find you have to get digital images of any of your oversize prints, posters, or photographs. We’ll cover a wealth of tips and advice for making the process easier, as well as covering making images with the free software. And, for those readers that are very experienced at scanning, tell us in the comments sections about your own tips and tricks to get great images out of your favorite brand of scanner.

Making Scanning Large Images Less Difficult

Large pictures, like this poster, are obviously too big to scan with this smaller size flatbed scanner. It’s actually quite easy to scan something this large in pieces and then put them together. Let’s start with some tips on getting a good scan.

Most flatbed scanners have a raised lip around the glass. When you’re scanning large images, this can help you get more accurate scans—simply butt the edges of your oversize photo or poster to the square sides to ensure you’re scanning your multiple pieces without twisting or warping the image too much.

Don’t worry if you can’t get it perfect, as a little bit of image geek trickery later will solve all of your problems. Just get it more or less flush against the edges, and when you can, get two sides flush, not just one.

As you scan, you’ll have to run the parts of your oversize image off the scanner, but flip it to keep at least one edge butted up against the side of the lip on the side of the scanner bed. Be redundant as you scan! Scanning some overlap area will be helpful later when we’re stitching our image together.

Nearly every scanner comes with some kind of cover, and make sure you use it. Scanners read light better when there’s better contrast, and this cover will block out excess light. If you can’t scan with the cover down (maybe you’re scanning a 3-Dimensional object or a book) try turning out the lights to darken the surrounding area to improve the image quality.

It can be difficult to scan multiple pieces and keep them in place, flush against the edges, on the scanner bed. In cases like these, clear scotch tape comes in handy to hold the back of the poster image in place as the cover rests on top of it.

Depending on your operating system and scanner, you may have more or fewer options when scanning. It can potentially give you a fuller value range to set brightness, color, and contrast options up in your scanner driver before scanning, so familiarize yourself with them and get your image closer to the result you want before you do any image editing in Photoshop or GIMP. While these programs have better, tighter controls over the image than the scanner drivers, radical changes to your scan file will be effectively squeezing and eliminating parts of your image—the result may be loss of detail or resolution. Although, depending on your needs, this may be acceptable.

Keep in mind when scanning poster-sized graphics, that huge graphics aren’t usually meant to be viewed up close and personal, so lower resolutions of 150 to 250 dpi are perfectly acceptable. If you’re used to working with 300 dpi and higher resolutions, this may come as a shock—but when graphics are meant to be viewed at distances of six feet or more, the increased pixel depth is often just a waste of hard disk space.

One final caveat when scanning images: do not save your scans as lossy JPG files! PNG and TIFF are non-lossy image files, and are the best suited to scanners. If you need to brush up on your image knowledge, you can read about the difference between JPG, PNG, and GIF.

Finishing Up In Seconds With Microsoft ICE

If you’ve never used ICE (Image Composite Editor) you’re in for a treat, as it’s image software at its best, as in not only easy, but free! Microsoft ICE is Windows only, as you might have guessed.

ICE was effectively created to create image panoramas, similar to the one we made last week with Photoshop. In fact, the program was an excellent suggestion by several HTG readers. Today, we’ll be using it to piece together our scans. Get started by navigating to File > New Panorama.

This image is shaped sort of like a panorama, but ICE has no trouble piecing together images that aren’t entirely horizontal or need to be stitched together vertically and horizontally. So basically, just throw all of your images into ICE, and watch it work.

And that’s all there is to it. ICE bangs out a downright impressive job of stitching the scanned images together in a few short seconds. From there, you can crop, rotate, and finally export your image in a number of different formats, including PNG, TIFF, and JPG. Seriously, freeware programs are rarely this delightful and easy to use—give it a shot if you have any need to scan oversize images.

Overview of the Epson Scan Modes

Full Auto Mode lets you scan quickly and easily, without selecting any settings or previewing your image. This is the default mode in Epson Scan.

How to do it yourself or use a professional service

En español | Chances are you’ve thought about bringing your old paper photos into the digital age.

Great idea. After all, you likely have a lifetime of precious memories trapped in photo albums, shoeboxes or dusty frames.

Once digitized, these photographs will no longer fade over time; they can be automatically repaired with smart software (such as adding back color, removing redeye and stitching rips); photos can be organized and easily searched by keyword (on a computer, tablet, phone or online cloud site); and you can share them with friends and family over email and social media, or create fun projects like scrapbooks, slideshows, fridge magnets and more.

There are several ways to go about scanning old photos (or slides or negatives), but it boils down to two main options: Do it yourself (DIY) or use a professional service.

Here’s a look at both options. Regardless of the direction you go, be sure to first organize your paper photos before you digitize them, or you risk having a “digital mess,” too, advises Mollie Bartelt, cofounder of Pixologie, a photo management company.

“You can organize your paper photos by major categories like decades or people, and then suborganize them into sections, like family events,” she says. Bartelt recommends putting photos into piles or small boxes, divided by index cards and labeled with sticky notes.

If you prefer to digitize photos yourself, you can pick up an inexpensive flatbed scanner (from $69), if you don’t already own one.

You might also invest in a multifunction printer (as low as $49), which is usually an inkjet printer, scanner, photocopier and sometimes a fax machine, too — all in one unit.

When scanning the photos facedown, keep in mind the higher the dots per inch (DPI), the better the resolution will be. For example, 300 DPI is OK for photos, but 600 DPI is recommended to ensure you get all the details in your pictures. A resolution of 1,200 DPI is only necessary if you’re looking to enlarge a photo to a poster-sized print through a service (see below).

In Jan 2003 I bought VueScan for my Epson Perfection 1200. I used it a lot, more functions than the standard driver. Got new computers with new operating systems, forgot about VueScan. I got a new Epson scanner – old one doesn’t have Win10 drivers. I remembered VueScan. Found it, downloaded the trial version, and my old EPSON 1200 scanner WORKED again. Overview

The Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant (SaRA) uses advanced diagnostics to report known problems and details about your Microsoft Outlook configuration. Reported problems are linked to public-facing documentation (usually a Microsoft Knowledge Base article) for possible fixes. If you’re a Helpdesk professional, you can review customer reports that are generated in HTML format.

The SaRA scenario that is described in this article replaces the Outlook scanning functionality that was originally provided by the Office Configuration Analyzer Tool (OffCAT).

System requirements

The following operating systems are supported:

  • Windows 10
  • Windows 8 and Windows 8.1
  • Windows 7

The Outlook program in any of the following Office versions can be scanned:

  • Microsoft Office 365 (2016 or 2013, 32-bit or 64-bit)
  • Microsoft Office 2016 (32-bit or 64-bit; Click-to-Run or MSI installations)
  • Microsoft Office 2013 (32-bit or 64-bit; Click-to-Run or MSI installations)
  • Microsoft Office 2010 (32-bit or 64-bit)

If you are running Windows 7 (any edition), you must also have .NET Framework 4.5 installed. Windows 8 and later versions of Windows include at least .NET Framework 4.5.

How to scan an Outlook configuration for known issues

The Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant can resolve issues in many programs. To scan Outlook for known issues and create a detailed report of your Outlook configuration, follow these steps:

Select Advanced diagnostics, and then select Next.

Select Outlook, and then select Next.

When you are prompted to confirm that you are using the affected machine, select Yes, and then select Next.

After your account is validated in Office 365, the scan automatically begins.

The scan may take several minutes to run.

You see the following error message if your account is in Office 365 and SaRA cannot validate your credentials.

If you select Back to reenter your credentials, and you see this same error, select Back again, and then use the following sample credentials to mimic a non-Office 365 account:

Any non-Office 365 account will not be authenticated through the Office 365 service. In this case, SaRA gives you an option to continue. Select the Next button to continue.

The scan is complete when you see We’re done collecting your Outlook configuration details.

Review your Outlook scan

Your scan report includes these separate tabs:

  • Issues found
  • Detailed View
  • Configuration Summary

Issues found

On the Issues found tab, you are provided a list of configuration issues that are detected during the scan.

Select an issue to expand it for a more detailed description. There is also a link to an article that contains steps for resolving the issue.

Detailed view

The information on the Detailed View tab is intended for advanced users, Helpdesk personnel, and IT administrators. This tab contains configuration information for diagnosing an Outlook issue from the client-side. This includes the following items:

  • User name
  • Computer hardware
  • Windows version
  • Office installation
  • Outlook profile
  • Registry and policies information
  • Event logs

The information is provided in a tree view. Select any node to expand or collapse it.

This scenario also collects important configuration information for Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Microsoft Word. To see this information, expand the Miscellaneous section in the tree view.

Configuration Summary

The information on the Configuration Summary tab is a snapshot of the configuration settings that are most frequently collected and analyzed.

Viewing scan results in a browser

To increase the viewing area for the scan results, select View results in my browser. This view displays the whole scan report, including all three tabs, in your default browser.

The Detailed View in your browser contains a search feature that is not found when you view this information in the SaRA window.

Sharing your scan results

After you review your scan results, select Next. The next screen provides an opportunity to see the log files that were saved on your computer (See all logs) or to view the log again (View log).

The scan file is ConfigurationDetails_.html. It’s located in the %localappdata%\saralogs\UploadLogs folder, for example, C:\users\ \AppData\Local\saralogs\UploadLogs.

Users who have an Office 365 account

If you sign in to SaRA by using an account in Office 365, you also see an option to send your files to Microsoft. This option is helpful if you are working with a Microsoft support engineer. Select Send to have your log files securely uploaded.

Select Don’t send if you don’t want to upload your log files. If you have to share your log files with someone, select See all logs to open the folder that contains all the logs that are created by SaRA.

If you select Send, only the .json file is uploaded to Microsoft.

Users who do not have an Office 365 account

If you sign in to SaRA by using an account that is not in Office 365, there is no option to send your files to Microsoft.

For example, if you have to share your log files with your Helpdesk, select See all logs to open the folder that contains all the logs that are created by SaRA.

You can copy the file from this folder to share with the person who is helping you to fix your Outlook issue.

There are many reasons people need to scan documents or photos into their computer. A couple common reasons include sending paperwork to someone across the country immediately, and the use of mail or other shipping methods are not fast enough. A person might be going paperless, but still want to keep important documents handy. They also may have printed photos that they want to transfer digitally to their phone or other devices.

While the methods vary slightly for different models of scanners, the following steps walk you through how to scan a document or photo into your computer.

How to scan a document

  1. Turn on the scanner.
  2. Locate the software for the scanner on your computer. If you don’t have the software that came with the scanner, most versions of Windows have a Windows Fax and Scan program installed, which works with most scanners.
  3. Count the number of pages you want to scan. If you are working with only one side of the page, we recommend using the flatbed, shown in the first picture below. If you are using either multiple pages or one page needing both sides scanned, you need a scanner with a feeder port, shown in the second picture below.

  1. When using the Windows Fax and Scan software, you need to verify at the bottom left of the computer screen that Scanner is selected, not Fax.
  2. Put the page(s) that needs to be scanned on the flatbed or in the feeder. Most scanners have directions on how to insert the paper, either face up or face down. Especially when using the feeder, make sure the paper is seated correctly so it is grabbed correctly.
  3. In the scanner software, click the New Scan or similar option.
  1. In the New Scan window, you’ll need to change any settings that might apply from the available options. For example, options may include Profile, Source, Paper size (if not letter size), Color format, File type, Resolution (DPI), Brightness, and Contrast. Change each of these depending on the type of document you are scanning.
  1. Once those options are changed, click Scan.

Saving the document

  1. After all the pages are scanned, a screen pops up showing the scanned pages. Make sure all pages are showing on the screen. If not, you need to re-scan the document.
  2. If using the Windows Fax and Scan program, at the top middle of the screen, click Save as, or you can click File, then click Save as.
  3. In the pop-up window, choose the Save in location, then type in the desired file name. Then, change the Save as type to .jpg, .bmp, .gif, .tiff, or .png, depending on your preference. We recommend saving any photos as .jpg, and any documents as .tiff. Saving documents as a .tiff reduces their size, making it easier to send by e-mail and similar programs.
  4. Once you’ve made the selections, click Save.

Once you’ve saved your file as one of the file extensions above, you can use a third-party PDF program to save your file as a .pdf. For further help see: How do I save a scanned document as a PDF?

How to run a scan

  1. Download this tool and open it.
  2. Select the type of scan that you want to run and start the scan.
  3. Review the scan results displayed on screen. For detailed detection results, view the log at %SYSTEMROOT%\debug\msert.log.

To remove this tool, delete the executable file (msert.exe by default).

About Hugin:

If you like drawing on large sheet of paper but decided you can’t do it because you own only a small scanner, then this article about Hugin is for you.

What is Hugin? Hugin is a free/libre open-source software. With Hugin, you can assemble a mosaic of photographs into a complete immersive panorama, stitch any series of overlapping pictures and much more. I’m using Hugin since 2010. Hugin is a very technical tool with many options. The development team is doing big effort to simplify the process, and recent versions are really easier to use than the previous one, but still not really as intuitive as modern software: I still need my notes to get things done with it. But if you know your way and settings the tool is easy. Hugin can be really faster than doing the stitching manually and produce a perfect result. Convinced? Follow me.

Install Hugin:

On Ubuntu/Elementary/Linux Mint (Ctrl+C to copy line in your browser, Ctrl+Shift+V to paste on terminal. One line at a time).

On other Linux distro, Mac and Windows , check the download page of the project.

The process, step by step:

1. Here the problem start: I like drawing on A3 sized paper (29,7×42 centimeter / 11.69×16.53 inches), it’s double size than A4 and have more room for drawings details.

2. But I don’t have a A3 scanner at home : they are expensive and take a lot of room. I also have no idea where I could find a A3 scanner compatible with Linux. It’s only problems, so I have to find a solution with my A4 scanner. A4 scanner are cheap and nowaday bundled with many printers ‘all in one’ devices. Here under my old Canon Pixma MP560 all-in-one printer scanner with a A3 sheet in the A4 scan top part. I’m scanning my big A3 artwork documents this way in two time, flipping the artwork upside down on the little scanner.

3. I scan them with Xsane on Linux Mint 17.3. I like Xsane because if you remove all unecessary panels and keep only the main user interface, it can just scan and auto-save the picture in a target folder. This way, I get two PNG files in sRGB , A4 sized with 300ppi quality (selected in blue here).

4. Here is the two scanned documents. I often have white margin all around the artwork, I rarely draw on all the surface of the A3. Only a central part of it. This way I need only two scans to get the full artwork scanned with an overlapping area. It’s important to have overlaps. Hugin will use the informations in the overlapping area to match the document together and stich them perfectly.

5. Before feeding Hugin with our raw scans, we need to prepare them a bit. That’s why I’m rotating the second scan at 180° thanks to the editing functions of the image viewer Nomacs.

6. The preparation is all about filenaming and alignement. The filenames must follow and images must have similar orientation. Hugin does a good job only if the images are ready this way.

7. We can finally open Hugin. Maybe in your operating system’s menu, there is multiple entries for Hugin. Select the one named “Hugin Panorama creator” in this case then press the ‘Load images. ‘ button.

8. [1] Do a multiple selection to select your files ( holding Ctrl key ) then [2] press ‘Open’.

9. After the files are selected, you’ll see this unfriendly dialog prompting you for a ‘HFOV(v)’ number [1]. Don’t ask me what a ‘HFOV(v) number’ is, I have no idea. Just remember for this field to enter ’10’ degrees. This magic number come from an outdated official tutorial. You’ll be stuck at this dialog if you don’t remember it. Too bad a simple ‘scanner’ preset don’t exist here to make this step intuitive. When it’s done, Then press [2] ‘OK’.

2021 edit: Franz, in the comment section of this article, reports that ‘5’ degrees is even more precise; and it makes sens after also reading the explanation of Zachary Vance, also in the comment section. Thank you both for the feedback!

10. Press the [1] ‘Align’ button, it should pop-up a console with computer output you don’t need to read (it will auto-close itself anyway). Just check your picture properly aligned after that within the control screen [2].

11. The last step, is to [1] Press the ‘Create Panorama. ‘ button, [2] switch the format to PNG , [3] Select the only option available and [4] press OK.

12. You’ll be prompted for saving two files. Just keep the default name and press OK. Then another console will pop-up with computer output, just wait it to finish, it will close itself. You should have a new dialog on screen indicating ‘Status Completed’.

13. Check your files on your file explorer: your autostiched version should be done. You can then close all windows of Hugin and delete the two original half-scan and the *.pto files created by Hugin.

14. A last step is just a little rotation with the image viewer Nomacs and saving.

15. It’s done : the two scanned parts of the picture were autostiched in a single picture thanks to Hugin. You can’t notice the area where the two scanned were merged, even if you zoom on the paper texture itself. It’s really perfect work.

A book scanner is any device used to digitize the pages of a book. Every book scanner has three parts. Cameras are used to capture images of each page. A controller triggers the cameras and saves the resulting photographs somewhere convenient. The scanner rig provides an ideal photographic environment while holding everything together.

Book scanners can be as simple as a cardboard box rig, a camera on a tripod, and your hand as the controller. Or they can have multiple moving parts with computer-controlled capture and high resolution cameras. Here is how a typical scanning rig comes together:

Lighting

Though some scanners rely on ambient room lighting, dedicated lighting is important to capture good scans. You want the lights to be strong and even. The lights must also be positioned to minimize glare and reflections.

Cameras

Each camera must be mounted securely and aligned to point directly at the center of the page it is scanning. If possible, you want two cameras so you can capture both pages at the same time.

Platen

The easiest way to avoid page curl in your images is to flatten the pages by pressing them against glass or acrylic. While there are some computer algorithms that can help dewarp the pages after capture, it is always more reliable to just capture flat pages in the first place.

The book lies at the center of any scanning rig. It is alternately pressed against the platen for scanning and then pulled away so that the page can be flipped.

Cradle

The cradle supports the back and spine of the book. While any contact with a book will cause wear and tear, a V-shaped cradle can minimize the wear that scanning can cause.

Most PC users use the built-in Windows Fax and Scan application to scan documents and pictures. Although Windows Fax and Scan gets the job done, it’s not as intuitive as programs offered by scanner manufacturers.

If you often use the Windows Fax and Scan program to scan documents and pictures, you might want to change the default scan settings. For instance, you might want to change the default output format to something PNG from the default JPEG. You might also want to alter the brightness and contrast levels.

In this guide, we will see how to change the default scan settings in Windows Fax and Scan application present in Windows 10.

Note that you can also change scan settings in the scanner app provided by your scanner manufacturer.

Here is how to change scan settings while using the default Windows Fax and Scan application.

Change scan settings

Step 1: Launch the Windows Fax and Scan program by typing the same in the Start/taskbar search field.

Step 2: At the bottom-left pane of Windows Fax and Scan window, select the Scan. Click the Tools menu and then click the Scan settings option.

Step 3: You might see two or more profiles. To change the default setting of a profile, select it, and then click the Edit button. To add a new profile, click the Add button and then select the settings.

Step 4: Your scanner will use the default profile unless you change the same. So, select the default profile from the list and then click the Edit button.

Step 5: You can select the color format, output file type, resolution, brightness, and contrast settings. After making the necessary changes, click the Save Profile button.

In addition to the built-in Windows Fax and Scanner application, you can also use the official Scan app available in the Windows 10 Store to scan documents and pictures, but the Scan app doesn’t offer many settings.
