How to restart your apple watch

Most of the time, the Apple Watch is fast and responsive. But sometimes it might slow down because of software issues or a misbehaving app might freeze watchOS. In either case, a restart or force restart should resolve most issues.

How to Restart Your Apple Watch

To restart the Apple Watch, you’ll have to turn it off and on again, like your iPhone. Unfortunately, there isn’t a simple “Restart” button that you can press. Before you start, make sure that the Apple Watch is not on the charger.

Press and hold the Side button on your Apple Watch until you see the Power menu.

Here, swipe the “Power off” slider to the right of the screen with your finger.

How to restart your apple watch

Your Apple Watch will now turn off.

After the screen has turned blank for several seconds, press and hold the Side button again until you see the Apple logo on the screen. When your Apple Watch loads the home screen, it has been successfully rebooted.

How to Force Restart Your Apple Watch

If your Apple Watch isn’t responding, you can force restart it as a last resort. Don’t force restart the Apple Watch while you’re updating the software as it might brick or corrupt the operating system.

To force restart your Apple Watch, press and hold both the Side button and the Digital Crown together for at least 10 seconds.

When you see the Apple logo on the screen, release both buttons.

Once your Apple Watch fully reboots, it should (hopefully) start working correctly again.

Now that your device is up and running again, take a look at our list of Apple Watch tips and tricks to learn what else your smartwatch is capable of doing.

Apple Watch

Apple.

Apple.

Apple Watch

Apple Watch.

There are a number of things you can try if your Apple Watch stops responding for whatever reason. This article outlines your options.

How to restart your apple watch
The first and most straightforward solution is to reset your Apple Watch, which is basically a way of turning it off and on again. This is useful if, say, an app has crashed and a standard force quit doesn’t work, or if the live data transfer between your iPhone and Apple Watch seems inconsistent.

Note that you can’t restart an Apple Watch if it is charging, so undock it first before attempting the following steps.

How to Restart an Apple Watch

    1. Press and hold the side button until you see the Power Off slider on the screen.
    2. Drag the Power Off slider with your finger.
    3. Once your Apple Watch has turned off, press and hold the side button again until you see the Apple logo.
How to restart your apple watch

If that didn’t solve your issue, you can try a force restart on your Apple Watch. Note that this should only be used as a last resort. And whatever you do, don’t perform a force restart if your Apple Watch is in the middle of an OS update.

How to Hard Reset an Apple Watch

    1. Press and hold both the side button and Digital Crown for at least 10 seconds.
    2. Release both buttons when you see the Apple logo.

What to Do if You Forget Your Passcode

If you forget your Apple Watch passcode, you’ll need to erase the device and then restore from a backup. You can perform this action by launching the Watch app on your paired ‌iPhone‌: tap the My Watch tab if it’s not already selected, tap General -> Reset, then select Erase Apple Watch Content and Settings .

How to restart your apple watch
Alternatively, you can start the erase and restore process on your Apple Watch by connecting the device to its charger and following these steps.

Press and hold the side button until you see the Power Off screen.

Hard press the Power Off slider and then let go.

Tap Erase all content and settings.

  • You’ll be asked to set up your Apple Watch again when the process ends. When you do, be sure to restore from a backup.

If your Apple Watch stops responding to your iPhone, you can reboot it or you can turn the Bluetooth connection off and on. If that doesn’t work to reconnect your Watch, you might need to reset it, and then you’ll need to re-pair it.

To restart your Apple Watch, press and hold the side button until the sliders appear. Swipe the Power Off slider to the right, and wait for your Watch to go dark. Turn it back on by holding down the side button (just below the digital crown) until the Apple logo appears.

If that doesn’t work, try forcing your Apple Watch to restart by holding down the side button and the Digital crown for at least ten seconds until the Apple logo appears.

If neither of the above works, you’ll need to reset your Apple Watch. Press the Digital Crown to bring up your Watch’s app screen, then tap on the little gear icon for the Settings app. Once there, tap on General, then swipe down to Reset.

How to restart your apple watchTap on Erase All Content and Settings, enter your passcode, and then confirm the erase by hitting Continue.

Once it’s erased and reset, you’ll need to re-pair your Apple Watch with your iPhone. Making sure you have iOS 8.2 or later on your iPhone, open the Apple Watch App there and the get your Apple Watch onto your wrist. Here’s how Apple recommends you pair and set up your Watch:

Put Apple Watch on your wrist, then press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo. When prompted, position your iPhone so that Apple Watch appears in the camera viewfinder on the iPhone screen. Follow the instructions on iPhone and Apple Watch to finish setup. During setup, you’ll choose your language, watch orientation, and passcode.

Now you should have a clean Apple Watch, and you can restore from backup.
