How to save share download and install custom photoshop actions

If you’ve taken the time to record an action in Photoshop, or you’ve edited an existing action, you’re going to want to save it, otherwise you run the risk if losing it if Photoshop decides to crash on you. Thankfully, Adobe has made it easy for us to save our actions, although there is one thing you need to be aware of. Photoshop does not allow us to save individual actions. We can only save action sets. So if you record or edit an action and want to save it (which of course you’ll want to do), you’ll need to select and save the entire action set. This is one of the main reasons why I suggested earlier that you should avoid placing your own actions inside any of the action sets that Photoshop comes with. Keep all of your actions inside your own action sets, which will make it easy to save them, load them, and keep them organized.

To save an action set, first select the set you want to save in the Actions palette. I have a couple of actions inside my “My Actions” set – the “Soft Glow” action we created in the previous section and the “Improved Photo Corners” action, which is a customized version of the original “Photo Corners” action that comes with Photoshop. I want to save this action set, so I’ll select it in the Actions palette:

How to save share download and install custom photoshop actions

With the action set selected, click on the menu icon in the top right corner of the Actions palette, or if you’re using Photoshop CS2 or earlier, click on the small right-pointing arrow. This brings up the Actions palette’s menu. Select Save Actions from the menu:

How to save share download and install custom photoshop actions

Photoshop will pop open the Save dialog box. Save your action set to a location on your computer where you’ll be able to easily access it later. I’ve created a folder on my Desktop named “Actions” and I’ll save the “My Actions” set into this folder. This will make it easy for me to find the action set later if I need to load it back into Photoshop. Make sure you save your action set with the extension “.atn” after the name if you want your actions to be playable on both a PC and a Mac. When you’re ready, click on the Save icon in the dialog box to save your actions:

How to save share download and install custom photoshop actions

Your actions are now saved! If Photoshop crashes at this point, your actions will be safe. Of course, if your computer crashes, you’ll probably lose Photoshop, your actions and everything else, so I would highly suggest backing up your actions on to a recordable CD or DVD, or on to an external hard drive just in case.

Resetting The Actions Palette To The Defaults

Now that we’ve saved our actions, let’s clear everything out of the Actions palette and reset it to just the Default Actions set. To do that, click once again on the menu icon in the top right corner of the Actions palette, or the small arrow if you’re using a version of Photoshop prior to CS3, and select Reset Actions from the menu:

Photoshop will pop up a warning box, as if often does, asking if you really want to replace the existing actions with the Default Actions set. Click OK to close the dialog box and rest your actions:

How to save share download and install custom photoshop actions

If we look in our Actions palette now, we can see that all of the action sets have disappeared. Only the Default Actions set remains:

Loading Actions Into Photoshop

Now that we’ve cleared out and cleaned up our Actions palette, let’s load the action set we saved a moment ago. Click on the menu icon (or the small right-pointing arrow) in the top right corner of the Actions palette to bring up the menu, then select Load Actions from the menu choices:

This brings up the Load dialog box. Navigate to where you saved your action set on your computer, select the action set, then click on the Load button in the dialog box. My action set was saved to a folder named “Actions” on my Desktop, so that’s where I’ll navigate to. I’ll click on the “My Actions” set, then I’ll click Load:

How to save share download and install custom photoshop actions

And now, if we look once again in the Actions palette, we can see that the “My Actions” set has been successfully loaded back in to Photoshop:

How to save share download and install custom photoshop actions

Notice how the action set appears already twirled open in the Actions palette. That’s because it was twirled open when I saved it. Action sets will appear either opened or closed after being loaded in to the Actions palette depending on how they appeared when they were saved.

How to save share download and install custom photoshop actions

Photoshop actions are extremely useful tools. They’re especially helpful if you’ve learned a bit of the program, but not enough to take on complicated edits yet. Actions can also seriously streamline your editing workflow and save you time.

Here, we’ll go over how to download Photoshop actions once you buy them, how to install them, and how to use them.

What Are Photoshop Actions?

Photoshop actions are one-click sequences that allow you to automatically make complex edits in seconds. Their code is prewritten to carry out a specific set of edits, so all you have to do is press the little “play” button. They aren’t extensions or add-ons, which also enhance what you can do with the program, but in different ways.

You can use actions for anything from setting up frequency separation in the retouching stage to giving your photos an entirely different look with intricate color grading. Actions basically allow you access to the skill set of a Photoshop expert, even if you’re not quite there yet.

Like Lightroom presets, they can serve as a starting point. You might have to tweak them or dial settings back, but they can still save you a lot of time getting the look you’re after.

How Do I Download Photoshop Actions?

You can download Photoshop actions from multiple places. Photographers will often sell them, some will offer them for free. A quick Google search will produce a trove of options from reputable sources. Adobe, for example, has free Photoshop actions you can mess around with if you’re just learning that produce some amazing effects, like this one from Nuwan Panditha.

Once you’ve found the action you want to try, simply download it and unzip the files from the ZIP folder onto your computer.

Installing Photoshop Actions

You can install the action you just downloaded in one of two ways:

  • Open the file folder via your computer’s file finder (Finder for Mac, Explorer for Windows) and click the action file, which will have the “.atn” extension.
  • Open the file from Photoshop.

To open the file with your computer, you just need to navigate to the ATN file and double-click it. That should automatically open Photoshop and load the action. After that, you can choose a photo to apply your action to and run it. You can also click and drag the ATN file into Photoshop once it’s open, and it will load in the Actions panel.

Note: If you choose to do this, the action might disappear once you restart your computer and have to be reinstalled.

Opening the action in Photoshop is slightly more complicated, but your actions will still be there if your computer restarts.

To do that, save your actions on your computer somewhere easy to find. Then, open Photoshop and go to the Actions panel.

How to save share download and install custom photoshop actionsThis image shows some actions already installed.

If you don’t see the Actions panel, go to “Window” in the top menu, then click “Actions” in the dropdown. This will open the Actions panel.

How to save share download and install custom photoshop actions

Click the menu button (four small horizontal lines) in the top-right corner of the Actions panel. You’ll get a dropdown menu.

How to save share download and install custom photoshop actions

Select “Load Actions.”

How to save share download and install custom photoshop actions

Find the saved action file on your computer (ending in “.atn”) and select the file. Look through your download folder carefully. Often, there will be additional files there meant to help you with running or tweaking your action, especially if they’re offered for free as a learning tool. You might find a simple text file with instructions, a link to a tutorial video, or both.

Once you find the ATN file, click “Open” to load your actions into the Actions panel. You’ll now be able to see the name of your action in the list.

Once the actions load, they’ll stick around unless you delete the original folder on your computer where you have the action file saved.

Running Your Photoshop Action

Now that your action is installed, you can choose a photo to run it on and do some experimenting.

Open a photo or file you’d like to work in on Photoshop. Then, select the layer you want to apply the action to. Often, this will be your initial background layer.

How to save share download and install custom photoshop actions

You can also make a copy of your background layer and apply the action there for a non-destructive edit.

Next, select your action in the Actions panel.

How to save share download and install custom photoshop actions

Click the little triangular play button in the bottom row of the Actions panel to run the action.

Photoshop should then immediately apply the effect of your action to your image. There may be a few seconds of loading time if the action is particularly complicated or your computer has low memory or processing power.

Once the action runs, you’ll be able to see its layers and get an idea of what editing techniques the creator used. They may add notes like “Replace Me” to signal that a certain layer can be replaced with an image or “Edit This” to let you know a layer can be tweaked to change the overall effect.

And that’s it! As you become more experienced with Photoshop, you’ll be able to recognize and adjust the parameters of your actions, or even create them yourself. Have fun experimenting!

This brings up the Load dialog box. Navigate to where you saved your action set on your computer, select the action set, then click on the Load button in the dialog box. And now, if we look once again in the Actions palette, we can see that the “My Actions” set has been successfully loaded back in to Photoshop:

What Is a Photoshop Action?

How to save share download and install custom photoshop actions

A Photoshop action is a “recorded” command that you can use later to perform tasks in the popular editing software. Using actions can help you tap into creative techniques, cutting edge post-processing styles and beautiful effects.

Here’s how Photoshop describes it:

An action is a series of tasks that you play back on a single file or a batch of files—menu commands, panel options, tool actions, and so on. For example, you can create an action that changes the size of an image, applies an effect to the image, and then saves the file in the desired format.

Actions can include steps that let you perform tasks that cannot be recorded (for example, using a painting tool). Actions can also include modal controls that let you enter values in a dialog box while playing an action.

How To Use Photoshop Actions in Photoshop

How to save share download and install custom photoshop actionsTo correctly run and use Photoshop actions, first make sure your Actions palette is open and visible. If it is not visible, the go to “Window” and click on “Actions” from the dropdown menu. With the Actions palette open and Greater Than Gatsby actions already loaded, follow these easy steps.

  2. Navigate to the Bottom of the Actions palette.
  3. Find the button shaped like a triangle lying on its side.
  4. Click the “Play” button and wait for the action to complete.

How To Modify The Effect Of A Photoshop Action in Photoshop

How to save share download and install custom photoshop actionsAll images are different and in most cases the default settings for an action will need to be tweaked to achieve the perfect look for your photo. There are two main ways to modify or customize a Photoshop action once it has been applied.

The most common method for adjusting the effect of a Photoshop action is to adjust the opacity of the entire layer group. You can select a layer group by clicking the “folder” icon next to an already run action within the layer palette. Once the layer group is selected, you can adjust the opacity by adjusting the intensity of the effect up or down.

The more detailed method for adjusting the effect of an action is to adjust the individual layers within the layer group. This requires a deeper understanding of the different components within the layer group, but the method for adjusting the opacity remains the same. Simply select the individual layer from within the group and adjust the opacity as needed.

Note: Actions will always work better on RAW images, simply because there is more information and data to manipulate. When actions are applied to a JPEG image, the effect can sometimes be overpowering. When this happens, you can simply reduce the opacity of an action’s layer to calm the effect.

Learn how you can migrate presets, actions, plug-ins, preferences, and settings while upgrading to a new version of Photoshop or installing Photoshop on a different computer.

Presets are collections of items and values that are applied to artwork in Photoshop. You can save and load presets, or replace them with custom values at any time. Actions, brushes, and keyboard shortcuts are examples of presets. Photoshop comes with presets, but you can also create your own.

Settings are actual values that are currently loaded in Photoshop. They control various elements and tools in the application, such as your current brush and all its values.

Actions are series of tasks that you play back on a single file or a batch of files—menu commands, panel options, tool actions, and so on. For example, an action can change the size of an image, apply an effect to that image, and then saves the file in the desired format.

You can migrate your custom preset collections, as well as some Photoshop presets, from one version of Photoshop to another on the same computer. The presets you can migrate include:

  • Actions
  • Brushes
  • Black and White (Adjustment)
  • Channel Mixer (Adjustment)
  • Color Range
  • Color Swatches
  • Contours
  • Curves (Adjustment)
  • Custom Shapes
  • Doutone (Mono, Duo, Tri, Quad)
  • Exposure (Adjustment)
  • Gradients
  • HDR Toning (Adjustment)
  • Hue and Saturation (Adjustment)
  • Keyboard Shortcuts
  • Levels (Adjustment)
  • Lighting Effects
  • Lights (3D)
  • Materials (3D)
  • Menu Customization
  • Patterns
  • Render Settings (3D)
  • Repousse (3D)
  • Selective Color (Adjustment)
  • Styles
  • Tools
  • Volumes (3D)

Migrate presets while updating Photoshop

By default, when you update to the latest version of Photoshop using the Creative Cloud desktop app, your presets, settings, and preferences are migrated from the earlier version of Photoshop. Also, when you launch Photoshop for the first time, you’re prompted to migrate all available presets from the most recent version of Photoshop installed on your computer.

Presets can be migrated from the latest version installed before Photoshop, going back to Photoshop CS3. To migrate from multiple versions of Photoshop, migrate presets sequentially from one version of Photoshop at a time.

You can, however, choose not to migrate them by deselecting Advanced Options > Import previous settings and preferences on the confirmation screen that appears after you click Update in the Creative Cloud desktop app.

Migrate presets after installing/updating Photoshop

If you chose not to migrate your presets when you updated Photoshop, or if you faced issues while migrating presets, you can select Edit > Presets > Migrate Presets to migrate presets, settings, and preferences later in Photoshop. Photoshop looks for an older version of Photoshop on the same system and prompts you to migrate presets.

Export and import presets

You can bring your presets from one computer to another, or to an offline computer, by manually exporting them and then importing. The Export/Import Presets is not restricted to computers running Photoshop as part of Creative Cloud.

  4. Select the desired presets and move them to the Presets To Export column.
  5. Click Export Presets .
  6. Select the folder to export your presets to. Choose a folder you can use to transfer the files using a USB drive, network, or an online sharing service.
  7. Click OK .

TARGET COMPUTER: On the computer receiving the imported settings, do the following:

  1. Choose Edit > Presets > Export/Import Presets .
  2. Select Import Presets .
  3. Select the presets you want to import, or click Add All .
  4. If you saved your presets to a folder that is not the default, choose Select Import Folder , and select the appropriate folder.
  5. Click Import Presets .

Save and load presets

You can move actions and presets across different versions of Photoshop on same or different desktops by saving them and loading them into the target application.

SOURCE COMPUTER: On the computer that has the presets you want to migrate, do the following:

  1. Open Photoshop.
  2. Choose Edit > Presets > Presets Manager .
  3. Choose the desired option from the Preset Type drop-down menu. For example, choose Brushes .
  4. Select the desired presets. For example, select the brushes that you want to migrate.
  5. Click Save Set and then, click Save . For a set of Brushes, then Photoshop creates a . ABR file at the following location by default:
  • (Windows) C:\Users\ \AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop \Presets\Brushes
  • (macOS) Applications/Adobe Photoshop /Presets/Brushes

TARGET COMPUTER: On the computer receiving the imported settings, do the following:

  1. Choose Edit > Presets > Presets Manager.

What Is Adobe Photoshop?

Adobe Photoshop is post processing software designed for photographers (and graphic designers). Photoshop is well known for its ability for processing your photos.

Our premium and free actions for Photoshop will help you instantly add Instagram filter effects, creative, and artistic styles to your images. All it takes is one click, and the effect is instantly applied.

You then have the power to adjust the edits for your personal preference. Oh, and you can join our private Facebook group to join 4,957 other photographers to share, learn, and network!

What Are Photoshop Actions?

A Photoshop action is a file that contains pre-saved editing information. These saved photo edits can then be applied to your photos with one click.

After tweaking the edit, from the action, you can then save that editing information as a new Photoshop action! The possibilities are endless. Fulfilling your creative vision has never been easier with our free Photoshop actions.

What Are Photoshop Presets?

A Photoshop preset, like actions, contains saved processing data. The difference between a preset and action is where you apply within Photoshop. A Photoshop action is applied directly to your opened image in the PS interface. A Photoshop preset, on the other hand, is applied in a program called ACR.

ACR stands for “Adobe Camera Raw.” Which is required if you want to edit your RAW files. Within ACR, you can apply your Photoshop preset with one click. Again like with actions, you can tweak the edit for the best results.

The other difference between presets and actions are the tools themself. Adobe Camera Raw doesn’t have the same options as Photoshop and vice versa. Although some of them are similar, the method for applying the edits is different. It all depends on what you want for your specific style since both give unique tools for post processing.

All of our free Photoshop actions include presets that are similar to their counterparts. There might be slight differences in the end result due to the editing tools. Download an individual set of your choice until you find the perfect style for your photos. Or find different styles by getting the entire pack or bundle with our premium membership and save hundreds!

How to Install and Use Overlays in Photoshop

How to save share download and install custom photoshop actions

When you download a new set of Photoshop overlays to use in your images, you will no doubt be excited to get started. But if you’ve never used overlays before, it may seem like more of a challenge than you expected.

Where do you start? How do you use them? Here we’ll give an in-depth look into getting started with Photoshop overlays, and beyond.

How to save share download and install custom photoshop actions

Installing your overlays

Let’s start by figuring out how to get your overlays into Photoshop in the first place. Actually, there’s no need to install anything at all, unless you are utilizing actions to do the hard work for you (then you will need to install those actions). Overlays work by fitting over the image you are using to create a particular effect, and they are image files themselves. This means you can treat them like any other image file.

Just start by saving your overlays in a folder you can find easily, where you know you will remember putting them.

You bring your overlays into Photoshop every time you want to use them. This may sound complicated, but Summerana’s Photoshop overlays come with a Photoshop action set which helps to take all of the stress away.

First you have to install your Photoshop actions into the actions toolbar – don’t fret if you don’t know how, as we have already written a tutorial on this to help you out too! Once they are ready, you can follow the instructions in the actions to get everything imported.

Of course, if you want to do things yourself, there’s a way to bring in overlays without using an action to do it.

Bringing overlays into Photoshop

First, open the image that you want to use your overlay with. Now go to the file menu and choose open. Select your overlay here and open it up.

This will bring the overlay into a new tab. Now, click on the image and drag it. You will see that the top layer starts to move, and you can even pull it off the screen. Drag it across until your pointer hovers over your base image’s name in the Photoshop toolbar.

After a moment, Photoshop should switch to showing your base image. Your pointer will appear as a box with dotted edges, and a smaller pointer. Release your hold, and the overlay will drop into place.

Alternatively, you can also use the ‘place’ option in the file menu. In this technique, simply select the overlay from your list of files. When it appears on your image, you can press enter on your keyboard to drop it into place. You can also move it around first, and make it smaller or larger depending on your needs.

Adjusting your overlays

Now that you have your overlay sitting as a new layer on your base image, you probably can’t see your base image at all! It will be covered by your overlay because both are set to 100% opacity.

To change this, you can reduce the opacity of your layer in the layers panel and/or change the blending mode of that overlay. As you bring the percentage down or change the blending mode, you will see your base image showing through.

Create a new layer mask by clicking on the button that looks like a box with a circular hole in the middle. This will allow you to make adjustments to the overlay layer without permanently deleting any part of it, so it is definitely the recommended option!

A white box will appear next to the image in the layers panel. Click on this white box and make sure that your brush tool is set to black. Change the opacity and hardness of your brush as much as you like, and then paint directly onto your image where you don’t want the overlay to show through.

You can use this method to keep your overlay where you want it. For example, you can clear textures off faces and skin, or ensure a sky overlay is only visible where the sky should be.

Here is a video Grace Pamela put together to walk you through exactly how to upload and use your Photoshop overlays:

Using .PNG overlays

There has been a glitch in Photoshop as of the November 2017 update which means you can’t use a .png file as an embedded overlay. There’s an easy way to get around this, and if you ever have problems with placing overlays, you can try this method instead.

First, open your base image as always. Then use the ‘file’ menu and the ‘open’ option to select your image.

Now that your overlay is open in a separate tab, go to ‘image’ and then ‘image size’ and make it match the dimensions of your base image. Next, use ‘select all’ and ‘copy’ to grab a copy of your overlay.

Finally, go back to your base image and ‘paste’. It should appear as a new layer.

If this still doesn’t work, you might be using a corrupted overlay file (which usually means your internet was disrupted at some point during the downloading process) or a file format which is not supported by Photoshop.

Using overlays for effect

Now you know how to use them, let’s talk a little about why! Overlays can be used for all kinds of effects, like the following:

  • Making it seem like there was something on the lens, like raindrops or a lens flare
  • Adding a new aspect to the image, such as changing out a dull grey sky for a bright sunset or sunny day
  • Creating an effect in the foreground of the image, such as snowflakes, falling leaves, or petals
  • Adding people or animal overlays into the frame to create a composite image, or when it would be too dangerous or unrealistic to have the real thing on set

The great news is that if you want to try any of these techniques out, you can sort through hundreds of overlays available in Summerana’s library membership that fit these themes! There are even free overlays you can play with that are available in our Free Photography Resources section.

How to save share download and install custom photoshop actions

Overlays are so useful for changing the look, mood, and feel of your images, as well as creating scenes that you would never be able to capture in real life. Adding them to your repertoire can really up your game, and can give you a whole new world of styles to sell to your clients.
