GIFs are a mainstay of communication platforms on the Internet. They’re incredibly popular for showing funny mistakes, animals doing cute things and as reaction images. WhatsApp didn’t originally support GIFs at all, it only added support in 2017. In fact, there are still some restrictions on how you can send GIFs. So how can you send a top tier reaction GIF to your friends on WhatsApp?
On mobile there three ways you can send GIFs. Firstly, if you have an animated gif saved to your phone, you can just select it as you would any other image and send it directly.
The second way to send a GIF is by converting a video to a GIF. When you go to send a video, there’s an option in the top right-hand corner (on the screen where you can crop the length of your video) to send the video as it is or to convert it to a GIF.
The video to GIF conversion button
The final option is to use the GIPHY search function. WhatsApp has an integrated GIPHY search function so you can find and send GIFs without having to leave WhatsApp. The GIPHY integration comes with a few tabs of suggested tags and a search function, so you can find the GIF you want. To open GIPHY you can either tap the sticker icon in the far right of the chat bar or tap the “GIF” label in the bottom left when you browse photos saved on your mobile.
Use the sticker icon to get to the GIPHY function – on Android, this symbol is different, and custom keyboards can also change it.
In WhatsApp Web
In WhatsApp Web, you can only send GIFs via the GIPHY functionality. To access GIPHY, click on the smiley to the left of the chat bar and then click on the GIF icon in the bottom left.
Unfortunately, WhatsApp does not support linking animated GIFs. If you try to send a link to a GIF the link will send properly. In some cases, you may get an inline embedded image, but the preview won’t be animated.
In WhatsApp Web, you can’t upload custom GIFs from your computer. WhatsApp will convert an uploaded GIF to a static JPEG and show an alert by the caption bar saying “This file was changed from original. Learn more”. If you click “Learn more” a message will pop up saying that “Custom GIF animations are not currently supported.” There doesn’t seem to be a reason why this restriction is only applied to WhatsApp Web.
You can’t upload GIFs to WhatsApp web.

Although it took a few years, WhatsApp now allows users to search for and send GIFs from within the app. Here’s how to do it.
Open your WhatsApp chat with the person you want to send a GIF to, and tap the + icon in the bottom left. Next, select Photo & Video Library.
If the GIF you want to send is already saved on your phone, you can select it from here and skip the next step. You can also turn any videos you want to send into GIFs. Select the video you want to send from your phone and then, in the editor, tap the blue switch in the top right corner.
If you want to search for a GIF on the internet instead, tap the GIF button in the bottom left.
WhatsApp is using the Tenor GIF keyboard as its source, so there are millions of choices. Use the search bar at the top to enter what emotion, TV show, or other term you want to use.
Select the GIF you want to send and it’ll open in the editor. With the tools at the top, you can trim, crop, add emojis, add text, or draw over the top of the GIF. You can also add a caption.
Once you’re done, tap the Send icon to message the GIF to your friend.
If someone sends you a GIF, or you really like the one you’ve just sent, you can also save it for later. Tap and hold on any GIF in WhatsApp and tap the Star icon. It will now appear in the Starred tab when you search for a GIF.
Despite being an absolutely terrible image format, GIFs have taken over the world because they’re so fun to use. WhatsApp has finally fallen under their spell too.
When things get too quiet in a group chat, GIFs come to the rescue. Ranging from funny, to sweet, to downright cringy, they can be anything you want. Here’s how to send GIFs directly on WhatsApp, no third-party app needed.
The WhatsApp app on iPhone and Android comes with a built-in tool for searching, sending, and staring GIFs (backed by the superb GIPHY service). Everything happens from the keyboard view in the chat.
To get started, open the “WhatsApp” app on your phone and navigate to a chat. Here, tap on the Stickers icon at the end of the text box.
This will replace the keyboard with the stickers section. From here, tap on the “GIF” button found at the bottom to switch to the GIFs section.
You’ll see the trending GIFs. Swipe up to scroll through all trending GIFs, or swipe left or right to switch between different sections. On the right, you’ll find GIF collections based on topics (like Love, Sad, Haha, and more).
Let’s try searching for a GIF. Tap on the Search icon (represented by a magnifying glass) in the bottom-left corner.
This will open a full-screen search box. Search for a GIF here. It can be something specific, like a show or a movie, or it can be something general, like a mood or an emotion.
When you find the GIF that you want to send, tap on its thumbnail.
This will open WhatsApp’s media editor. You can trim the GIF, add a sticker, or even doodle over the animated image. When you’re done editing, tap on the Send button to share the GIF in the chat.
The GIF feature in WhatsApp also lets you favorite GIFs.
To favorite a GIF, all you have to do is star the image. When you’re in the chat, tap and hold on the GIF and then select the “Star” option.
Starred GIFs will show up in the Starred section in the GIF picker window.
To view recently used GIFs, tap on the “Recent” button found in top-left corner of the GIFs section.

What are GIFs?
As you may already know, GIF (pronounced “jiff” or “gif”) stand for “Graphic Interchange Format”. They are essentially animated images. They have gained popularity thanks to the ability to express an idea, meme or joke in a few seconds. GIFs are generally less than 6 seconds long, don’t have sound and continuously repeat themselves. They’re not exactly videos as their more similar to jpeg or png files (image files). If anything, they’re more like flipbooks.
Due to their recent popularity on social media, Whatsapp has joined in with other social platforms that are now allowing their users to send GIFs.
How to send GIFs through Whatsapp
In order to send GIFs via WhatsApp, the first thing you do is download the latest version of this application. If you have the mobile configured to update automatically, you will surely already have it. If this is not the case, you can go to the Apple Store or the Android Play Store and update WhatsApp.
The version you need is at least v2.16.293. Once you have it downloaded and installed you can start sending GIFs by WhatsApp by following these steps:

2. Now, go to the chat where you wish to share a GIF.

4. Now, emojis will be displayed. Look at the very bottom. At the right side of the emoji icon you will find the GIF icon. 5. Tap on it to see all gifs.
6. You will see many GIFs. You can also search for other GIFs by pressing the search icon on the bottom of the keyboard.

8. Tap on the send button.

Another way to use GIFs is by simple searching for them on google and downloading them into your gallery. However, nowadays, GIFs have become so popular that new phone models are even including them into their system’s keyboard. This allows users to find and use GIFs in any social platform, making it easier than ever to use.

There are other apps you can use, and you can also use your own content to create GIFs. If you ever wanted to turn your friend into a GIF, this is your chance. Let’s discover all your options when it comes to sending GIFs on WhatsApp.
How to Create Your Own GIFs on WhatsApp
Creating GIFs on WhatsApp using your own content is easier than you think. To create a GIF, just open the contact you want to send the GIF to and choose a video. To turn that video into a GIF, you’ll need to shorten it. To do that, slide the edges of the videos until you see the GIF option appear.
Right below the GIF you’ll see how long your GIF is. At the top-right you can also add emojis, text, and even draw on your GIF. If you ever want to remove anything you added, merely tap on the back arrow. To send, simply tap on the arrow.
How to Find GIFs Integrated in WhatsApp
If you’d rather stick to the GIFs that WhatsApp has to offer, you can do that, too. To the left of the text box, you’re going to see a happy face. Tap on that, and at the bottom you will see the GIF option.
At first you’ll only see random GIFs, but if you want to find a specific GIF, tap on the search option at the bottom. Once you type in the keywords, you’ll see a large variety of your preferred GIFs. To see a preview of your GIF, just tap on it, and to send, tap on the arrow on the bottom-right.
Must-Have GIF Apps for WhatsApp
Giphy just had to be at the top of the GIF app list. It appears to be the most popular GIF app out there. It has such an extensive amount of options that you won’t know where to start.
You can either use the search bar or go through the various tabs such as Trending, Reactions, Actions, Emotions, MEMES, TV, Movies, Music, Animals, and more.
Another app you can try is Gif Free – All GIFs. It’s not nearly as popular as Giphy, but it does have a lot of great GIFs to offer. The GIFS are divided into categories and then into sub-categories.
For example, let’s say you’re looking for animal GIFs, when you go into that category, you’ll have to choose what kind of animal. You’ll need to choose between Frog, Hamster, Horse, Fish, Elephant, etc. Once you’ve selected your GIF, the app offers the share button right below the GIF.
You can directly share to WhatsApp, Messenger, Facebook, Snapchat, or download it.
GIFs are one of the most commonly used features to express how you feel without having to type so much. Thanks to the above tips, you’ll always be able to find and send the best GIF for your mood, even if you have to make it yourself. Where do you get your GIFs from? Leave a comment and share your thoughts.
