Are you someone that has switched to Google Chrome because of how quick and compact of a browser it is? I know that this is one of the reasons that I prefer to use it, and a big reason for my liking Chrome is the simplicity of the interface. But the gray bar underneath the address bar, also referred to as the bookmark bar, is one thing that you can eliminate if you are not using it.

Learning how to hide the bookmarks bar in Chrome will also show you how to access the settings menu in the browser, which includes a number of other settings that might be useful. For example, if your browser is lagging or acting strangely, you might want to try disabling hardware acceleration to see if that helps.

To show more bookmarks at once, you can show icons only on the Chrome bookmarks bar. Here’s how you can do it.

Like with any web browser, the Google Chrome browser supports bookmarking webpages. Whenever you find an interesting webpage or if you have a website(s) that you frequently visit, you can quickly bookmark it in Chrome. Once bookmarked, the site is added to your bookmarks bar. The good thing about the Chrome bookmarks is that it gives you a fair bit of customization when it comes to organizing bookmarks.

When you bookmark a webpage in Chrome, the browser automatically grabs the page title and its icon. Chrome then uses this information to save the bookmark. This helps us quickly identify the bookmark among other bookmarks.

If you don’t need the webpage title, you can remove it and show icons only on the Chrome bookmarks bar. Showing icons only will fit more bookmarks on the bookmarks bar and even makes it easy to access them. For example, when you are bookmarking Facebook or Twitter, you generally don’t need the page title because the website icons are plenty recognizable.

In this quick guide, let see how you can show icons only on the Chrome bookmarks bar.

Steps to show icons only on Chrome bookmarks bar

  1. Open the Chrome browser.
  2. Go to the webpage you want to bookmark.
  3. Click on the “Star” icon in the address bar.
  4. Delete everything in the “Name” field.
  5. Select “Bookmarks bar” from the dropdown menu.
  6. Click the “Done” button.

Detailed steps

1. First, open the Google Chrome browser. You can either double-click on the desktop shortcut, click on the chrome icon on the taskbar, or you can search for “Chrome” in the Start menu.

2. After opening the Chrome browser, go to the webpage you want to bookmark. In my case, I want to bookmark the Twitter homepage. So, I opened the Twitter homepage.

3. Once you are on the webpage you want to bookmark, click on the “Star” icon in the address bar. This action will bookmark the site and shows additional options.

4. In the additional options, delete everything in the “Name” field. This will ensure that the bookmark is saved without the webpage name but with an icon only.

5. Since we want to add the bookmark to the bookmark bar, select “Bookmark bar” from the dropdown menu. Next, click on the “Done button.”

How to show (or hide) the google chrome bookmarks bar

That is all. As soon as you click on the Done button, the bookmark is added to the bookmarks bar. Since we did not add any title, Chrome will show the icon only on the bookmarks bar.

If you cannot see the bookmarks bar in Chrome, you can enable it by selecting the “Menu → Bookmarks → Show bookmarks bar” option.

Do keep in mind that if a website or webpage has no icon (favicon), Chrome will show the generic globe icon as the website icon in the bookmarks bar.

Chrome’s bookmarks live in a bar just below the URL bar. You can choose to show or hide it with the Ctrl+Shift+B keyboard shortcut. The bookmarks bar cannot show all bookmarks and they have to be tucked into a menu where you can scroll through them. It’s either that, or you can open the Bookmarks’ Manager and access them from there. Other browsers do it a bit differently; they add the bookmarks as a side panel. If you’d like to get a Chrome bookmarks side panel, you can get it with an extension called Bookmark Sidebar.

Chrome bookmarks side panel

Install Bookmark Sidebar from the Chrome Web Store. Once installed, it will walk you through a brief set up which you don’t want to ignore. The last step lets you choose how the bookmarks side panel will appear. You can have it appear when you mouse over the selected side of your browser, when you click the extension’s icon, when you right-click your browser’s side, or when you left-click it.

How to show (or hide) the google chrome bookmarks bar

After that, your selected action will bring up the bookmarks side panel. You’ll find that it is very smooth to open, quick to dismiss, and easy to navigate through.

As for its appearance, if you go to the extension’s options, you will find there is tons to customize with respect to the appearance. You can also have your bookmarks appear on the new tab page however, you will need to enable this from the extension’s options.

How to show (or hide) the google chrome bookmarks bar

The bookmarks panel that Bookmark Sidebar adds lets you rearrange bookmarks and move folders up/down. It also has a search bar that you can use to search the bookmarks, and a button that lets you sort them alphabetically, most frequently used, and recently used. It can also be navigated with just your keyboard.

It’s hard to imagine Google adding anything better than what Bookmark Sidebar does. It looks good, is more customizable than most aspects of Chrome, and has practical features for managing bookmarks.

Bookmark Sidebar also has a premium version which gives you access to experimental features and more customization options. With the premium version, you can change the width of the panel, you can check your bookmarks for broken links which is great if you’re looking to clean them up, and even create your own Stylesheet. The premium version is available at three different price points, all of which give you the same features. The different price points are basically just choices to make it more affordable.
