How to update your xbox one controller’s firmware without an xbox one

Simple question. I am not 100% sure, but under Settings- system- there is an option now to update the controller firmware. So, I talked to an Ambassador, and they told me, when Titanfall comes out, the controller update will be needed. He/She may be wrong, as I don’t know where ambassadors get their information. However, the MAJOR problem remains. At some point, we are going to have to update our XBOX One Controllers, and we cannot do it if Microsoft did not supply the cable which is required. I do understand its a simple micro USB cable, probably $5, but this has the potential to bottleneck a lot of people who do not have the cable.

Now, my XBOX day one edition did not come with any micro USB cable, and I do not know if any later editions did or did not. I think a cable comes with the charge kit, but I am not buying an overpriced charge kit.

If it comes down to where people cannot use their controllers without a firmware update, simply because Microsoft was cheap on not putting the cable in the XBOX One package, it may make a few people upset. Microsoft needs to implement a free micro-USB cable program or something. At some point, we are going to HAVE to update these controllers, even if right now, its just for the headset. I remember there was a similar program with the 360 and transfer kit.

Official Support told me to go out and buy a cable.

Well actually I have 4 different USB/Micro USB cable and none of them fit. in fact I came to forums in hope of finding an answer myself. surely not expected to buy the play and charge just for the cable. in my case all 4 of my cables were exact same size and all 4 of them were too large on the micro end for the controller. so it is a valid question I still don’t have an answer too. actually now I think about it the wife found 2 on her own. so that makes 6 of these I have in my house that are all identical and none fit. whats the deal anybody? Tnx in advance for any help..

Hi there notyourbrodude you will likely have to purchase a charge and play kit from gamestop or see if xbox has one you can purchase or like previously mentioned look on ebay. That ambassador is correct the controller update does coincide with titanfall as well as lets you use third party headsets with your controller.

Most all current cell phones and tablets come with micro USB cords for power and charging. Of course apple products are a different story. Anyways. You can just buy a micro USB cord from Target, Walmart, Radio Shack, etc. for pretty cheap.

What I have read, the controller update for Titanfall is done by, just sync the controller to Xbox one(over air). This only updates the right stick on the controller, and this update was put out, before Titanfall open beta. You need an cable to update the controller, to used the Headset Adapter, and if you buy the adapter, it’s comes with an small cable. An Micro USB cable is used for many things now, Phone, Kindle, etc..

Thank you Willapus, as that explanation may make the most sense. I have been playing the Titanfall beta, and if it was already needed, then I don’t need to worry.

I am not sure people have noticed that there are different kinds of these micro USB cables. The first person who responded, seemed a bit arrogant about the cable issue. I have 2 micro USB cables, and neither of them fit the port on the controller. One end is obviously standard USB 4 pin, but the other end seems to be manufacturer specific. And no, I don’t own any i(apple) products, whatever you meant by isheep.

There is also a Sticky that was put up in the Dashboard Preview Forum, about the fact that cables are not able to properly carry the data to update the controller, so you are taking a chance at buying one that is not from Microsoft.

” Our developers are investigating the reports of controllers failing to update their firmware when connected with various types of micro-USB cables. Here are some troubleshooting steps that they recommend in the meantime to see if your cable will work:

1. Remove the batteries from your controller.

2. Plug the controller into your console via your micro-USB cable.

a) If the controller lights up you should be good to go.

b) If the controller’s light is initially off but pressing the controller’s Xbox button powers it on and you are able to navigate with it, then there is a problem with the data connection of your micro-USB cable (or possibly the connection on the controller itself).

c) If the controller cannot be turned on by pressing the nexus then the controller is not receiving power via the micro-USB cable.

Unlike Sony’s DualSense controller for the PS5, you have the ability to update your Xbox wireless controller using your Windows 10 PC, and how to do it isn’t really a challenging process. Though, it may seem that way if you’re not entirely sure how to go about it.

Luckily, we can walk you through all the steps to update your Xbox wireless controller using your PC. The process involves downloading an app from Microsoft to complete everything, though that should be expected. Microsoft does own Windows as well as Xbox. So it shouldn’t be surprising that it wants to make updating controllers possible without the use of the console.

Especially when you consider that a lot of people who play games on PC use the Xbox wireless controller to play those games. Here’s how to get everything going.

Basically, to fix issues. Since the controller is compatible with a wide variety of platforms, from Xbox, to Windows, to Android, to iOS, to Steam and more, sometimes little problems may arise that need to be addressed. And these updates help with that.

To update your Xbox Controller using a Windows 10 PC, you must first download and install the Xbox accessories app from the Windows Store. Then:

  1. Connect your Controller to the PC via USB, wireless adapter, or Bluetooth
  2. A wired USB connection, however, is the best and safest way to go
  3. Open the Xbox accessories app
  4. Press the ellipsis (…) button on the app to view the Controller’s status
  5. Check the app to see if you need a Controller firmware update
  6. Click on “Update now” to begin updating the Controller
  7. Remember not to use the Controller until the update is completed

For PC gamers with Xbox One controllers, it can be easy to overlook the ability to update the controller’s firmware. Firmware updates can help improve the controller’s performance, but Windows 10 has no built-in mechanism to let you know one is available. This technique will also come in handy for Xbox owners who want to check for controller firmware updates while away from their console.

To check for firmware updates, you’ll need to install the Xbox Accessories app. Open the Microsoft Store, search for the app’s name and click “Get” to commence the download. Launch the app once it’s installed.

How to update your xbox one controller’s firmware without an xbox one

Make sure your controller is connected to your PC. Any connection method will work – USB, wireless adapter, or Bluetooth for modern Xbox controller hardware revisions. However, it is worth remembering that firmware updates could brick your controller if the process goes awry. For this reason, it may be safer to eliminate the risk of a wireless dropout and use a USB cable.

How to update your xbox one controller’s firmware without an xbox one

Once your controller’s connected, press the “…” button on the Xbox Accessories app homescreen. This allows you to view the status of your controller, including its battery level and current firmware version. You can also “buzz” the controller to force a pulse from its rumble motors.

How to update your xbox one controller’s firmware without an xbox one

If a firmware update is available, you’ll see details about it on the top-left of the screen. Click the button to begin the update process, following the instructions carefully. Don’t use the controller while it updates. After the process is complete, you’ll be dropped back to the status screen, which should show the new firmware version.

How to update your xbox one controller’s firmware without an xbox one

If you already have the latest firmware, you can still press the “Firmware version” button and “update” again. It’s unclear why you’d need to do this, although it may be a potential troubleshooting option in the event your controller appears to be malfunctioning.

That’s it all, although we wish it was a simpler process. Having Xbox Accessories as a separate, optional app alongside the pre-installed Xbox app is strange to say the least. Ideally, Windows 10 should offer built-in driver-level support for updating Xbox controllers. Since the app is an optional download that you have to go looking for, it’s probable that many PC gamers are using controllers with outdated firmware – simply due to a lack of awareness that newer versions are available.

You can use an Xbox One without a controller but you won’t necessarily get all of the functionality out of it. You can control elements of your console, chat and share updates with an app, connect a standalone mouse and keyboard or use a third-party adapter to connect a mouse and keyboard.

How to update your xbox one controller’s firmware without an xbox one

You won’t be able to play many games and certainly not the faster or twitchier games unless you use that adapter. Neither the app nor mouse and keyboard option is ideal but can work after a fashion. The adapter is the best option but is also expensive. If you don’t have your controller, it breaks and you’re waiting for a replacement to arrive or something else, you can Xbox One without a controller with one of these solutions.

Use the Xbox app

The Xbox app has been around for a few years and is a viable way to control your Xbox One. You can chat with friends, look for groups in games, update your activity feed, watch videos and promos of games, buy games to remotely for your Xbox and use it as a media controller for watching movies or TV.

The app and your Xbox will need to be on the same WiFi network but should find each other without a problem if they are.

Using the app to play games is much more limited. You can play basic games as the app can use the keyboard to control but it takes some getting used to and is nowhere near as exact as an Xbox controller.

The app is available for Android and iPhone and works okay on each. The app does have a tendency to crash and error though so is far from perfect. It works better as an addition to an Xbox controller rather than a replacement for it.

Once you’ve downloaded and signed into the Xbox app on a mobile device, simply click the three bar tab at the bottom. Next, select the Xbox you’re wanting to connect to (be sure that your mobile device and the Xbox on are on the same wifi network otherwise you won’t see your console).

Now, you can select the option to access the Xbox remote.

How to update your xbox one controller’s firmware without an xbox one

If done properly your screen will look like this:

How to update your xbox one controller’s firmware without an xbox one

While it may take some getting used to, it’s definitely an Xbox controller. You’ll likely have to play around with the functions for a bit to get used to it though.

Use a mouse and keyboard with Xbox One

PC gamers and Xbox One gamers are often prevented from playing the same matches as mouse and keyboard can give PC players an advantage. So what if you could use a mouse and keyboard with an Xbox One? You can after a fashion.

You can use a USB mouse and keyboard to navigate your Xbox One already. There is mouse support built into the console and keyboard shortcuts already configured. Only some games are compatible with this form of control though.

This page on the Xbox One support website tells you exactly what you currently can and cannot do with a mouse and keyboard on Xbox One. The page does not tell you which games currently support mouse and keyboard but I know Fortnite and War Thunder do as I tested them.

Use a third party dongle with Xbox One

How to update your xbox one controller’s firmware without an xbox one

There are a couple of good third-party dongles that let you connect and use a mouse and keyboard to an Xbox One. They include the XIM Apex and IOGEAR KeyMander. Both of these dongles translate mouse and keyboard input into the Xbox for use in games. This is the only viable way I know of right now to use an Xbox One without a controller to play games.

They aren’t cheap though. Both adapters are $99.99 and don’t include the mouse or keyboard.

These dongles connect to your Xbox via USB and the mouse and keyboard connect to the dongle. The dongle translates input from the mouse and keyboard into native Xbox language so it can be used for all of the control schemes you would typically use in a game. You can also create specific profiles so you can use your favorite shortcut keys or mouse buttons for specific commands within a game.
