How to upgrade your old minecraft maps for seamless transitions to new biomes

This Minecraft tutorial explains how to create different sized maps with screenshots and step-by-step instructions.

In Minecraft, you can create up to 5 different sizes of maps in the game. The bigger the map, the more of the terrain you can see. With larger maps, you can easily find your friends and see their movements when they join your world.

Let’s explore how to create the different sizes of maps in Minecraft.

Required Materials

In Minecraft, these are the required materials to upgrade your map to Level 4 which is the largest size:

Steps to Create Different Sized Maps

1. You need a Locator Map

First, you will need a locator map that is crafted using 8 paper and 1 compass. This type of map allows you to see the location of yourself and your friends that join your world. The map starts out as a Level 0 map which is the smallest sized map that you can craft in the game.

When you open this map, it should look something like this:

You can see yourself (the white dot) and the direction you are facing. We are currently facing down which is South on the map.

2. Upgrade the Map to Level 1

To upgrade the size of you map, you need to upgrade your map from Level 0 to Level 1. To do this, add the Level 0 map and 8 more paper to the 3×3 crafting grid.

The newly crafted map will now be upgraded to a Level 1 map which is larger than the previous. When you open this map, it won’t be completely filled in.

You will need to travel around in the world to fill in the detail.

3. Upgrade the Map to Level 2

To upgrade your map to an even larger size, you need to upgrade your map from Level 1 to Level 2. Add the Level 1 map and 8 more paper to the 3×3 crafting grid.

When you open this map, only a portion of the map will be filled in.

4. Upgrade the Map to Level 3

To upgrade your map to an even larger size, you need to upgrade your map from Level 2 to Level 3. To do so, add the Level 2 map and 8 more paper to the 3×3 crafting grid.

4. Upgrade the Map to Level 4

To upgrade your map to the largest size, you need to upgrade your map from Level 3 to Level 4. Add the Level 3 map and 8 more paper to the 3×3 crafting grid.

On the map, you are the white dot and the other colored dots are your friends that join your world. As the players travel around in the world, the player dots in the map will show their current location (so you can literally watch the players move around in the game on the map).

Congratulations, you just learned how to create different sized maps in Minecraft.

The Minecraft 1.17 Caves ; Cliffs update is just around the corner and, as with many Minecraft updates, this one is going to have an impact on your existing world.

Although, perhaps not to the extent that you may think.

Changes to Existing Worlds in Minecraft 1.17

As the name of the update suggests, Minecraft 1.17 will start to improve what you find underground, including the addition of new resources. Cave generation will be a little bit better.

You will also likely notice that mountains look a bit richer in appearance. Their height can vary drastically, and some will be able to generate up to Y = 256.

Existing worlds will be able to benefit from these features.

However, these features will only generate in chunks that have yet to be generated.

Any chunks that have been generated already will be stuck with the same features as the update you had installed when you first explored that chunk.

The new world generation won’t start to kick in until you start to explore a little bit further afield. However, the new world generation can be somewhat jarring.

This is because it works in a slightly different way than the previous world generation, and thus you may experience chunk errors.

What are Chunk Errors?

Chunk errors occur when you have chunks under the old world generation rules next to chunks with the new world generation rules. This means that you may suddenly find biomes that change in an unnatural way.

In this update, you may find that a huge mountain can appear out of nowhere with seemingly no warning. You may find that previously mined areas will look a little bit different if you are entering new territory.

None of this is going to be game-breaking. This update has been tested extensively already. It just may not be great for those that really care about the look of their current world.

Experiencing the New Features of Minecraft 1.17 on Current Worlds

The best way to experience the new Minecraft 1.17 update is to create a new world once the update launches.

The new world will follow the 1.17 rules for world generation. This means that you will be greeted with those beautiful mountains, and new underground biomes right away.

If you do not want to create a new world, then you will need to head out further into the world than you have ever been before in order to generate new chunks that follow the new world generation rules.

For some, this may be a rather long way.

What is Chunk Pruning?

If you have the Java Edition of Minecraft and enjoy modding, then you can also look into the idea of chunk pruning.

This can allow you to reset chunks in your current world. Once the chunks have been reset, you can explore them again.

Although, do make sure that you are careful with chunk pruning. You could end up resetting developed areas if you aren’t careful.

Other than this, there isn’t any special preparation that you need to do. The Minecraft 1.17 update will work with your current Minecraft world.

It is not going to have any impact on your current Minecraft building activity or your inventory.

Minecraft works just fine right out of the box, but tweaking and extending the game with mods can radically change the experience. Some mods are great for brand new players and seasoned veterans alike, while others are aimed squarely at breathing new life into the game after you have already seen everything that the basic game has to offer. With a never-ending spigot of mods from a tremendously talented and dedicated fan base, you can always find something new to do or see in Minecraft.

Whether you’re brand new to Minecraft, or you’re just new to modding, we’ve put together a list of the 15 best Minecraft mods that improve graphics or performance, add useful functionality, and open up brand new worlds to explore.

If you are brand new to Minecraft, we highly suggest checking out the basic game first to get a feel for it, and then add mods over time to make things easier, prettier, and finally to totally change up the entire experience.

The mods in our list work regardless of the platform you’re using, so you can safely grab them whether you’re playing on Windows, OS X/mac OS, or Linux. However, they only work with Minecraft: Java Edition.

If you’re playing a version of the game like Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition, or any console or mobile version, you have to buy skins, modpacks, and other content from the in-game store. Mods for the Java version of the game do not work with any other version.

How to upgrade your old minecraft maps for seamless transitions to new biomes

Installing Minecraft mods is pretty easy, especially with the help of Minecraft Forge, but mods aren’t always compatible with each other, and individual mods aren’t always compatible with the latest version of the game. If you want a seamless mod experience, consider checking out a curated Minecraft modpack like Regrowth or All The Mods, or a custom launcher like Feed the Beast or Technic.

A number of the improvements are around languages (locales) so to see them you will need to delete your old language files so that BentoBox can recreate them. If you have customized your files, do not do this otherwise you will lose all your customizations.

Other notable changes are the addition of a new event in the API: IslandNewIslandEvent . This is fired after the player is teleported to a new island. This can be used by addons to run code that needs to be run only after the player has arrived on their new island. One example is with Boxed, where achievements are cleared for the player.

World Machine was instrumental in creating the terrain for our Supersonic Sled demo. We needed a very large landscape and wanted something natural-looking but with enough control that we could place canyons and hills exactly where needed. World Machine handled all of that beautifully.

World machine gives us the power to create very realistic terrains in a short amount of time. . Its erosion filters are the best I have seen but also give a lot of control over the final look. i would recommend this to any development studio that needs very realistic terrains, quickly!

-Kenny Lammers, Technical Art Director, Microsoft Games Studio

World Machine works well with our proprietary terrain editor in that we can not only create height maps, but alphas for our terrain paint layers as well. This saves a bundle of time and with results that look more detailed and professional.
