Mac gamers are real. If you work in one of the creative industries, there’s a good chance you have a beast of a Mac that’s more than capable of playing modern games—although not at maxed out settings. The real barrier is trying to play anything not in the Civilization series with a trackpad. To play other games, you’ll need to set up a controller. Got a DualShock 4 controller for your PlayStation? Good news: It’ll work on your Mac, too.

If you’re serious about gaming, you’re probably best off installing Windows through Boot Camp and using your PS4 controller in Windows. But if, like me, you just occasionally want to run around the rooftops of historic buildings or overthrow unspecified foreign governments, there’s no point dedicated 50 GBs of SSD space to it.

Pair Your Controller Wirelessly or Plug It In

When it comes to connecting a PS4 controller to your Mac, you have two options: use a USB Micro cable, or connect wirelessly over Bluetooth. The USB option is simple: you just plug the controller in and it will work. Bluetooth, however, takes a few extra steps.

First, turn off the controller if it’s already on. If it’s on and paired with a PlayStation 4, hold down the “PlayStation” button and then select the “Log Out of PS4” or “Enter Rest Mode” option in the menu that appears on your TV. The controller will turn off.

On your Mac, go to System Preferences > Bluetooth and make sure Bluetooth is turned on. Then, grab your DualShock controller and hold down the PS and Share buttons until the light starts flashing blue.

How to use the playstation 4’s dualshock 4 controller on a mac

Wait a few moments and Wireless Controller will appear in the list of Bluetooth Devices on your Mac. Click Pair and the two will connect.

How to Map Your Controller’s Buttons for Gaming

Once you’ve got the controller connected, you can configure it to work with your games.

Plenty of games available through Steam come with controller support. If you’re more interested in retro games, the emulator OpenEmu has built in controller support as well. For anything else, you’re probably going to need to set things up manually.

There are a few different options available, but I use the free and open-source Enjoyable. With it, you can assign each button or analog stick to any key press or mouse movement you want.

Download, install, and run the app. Each game you want to use the controller with needs a separate mappings profile. Press Command+N on your keyboard to create a new profile and name it after the game or emulator you want to play. Each profile saves automatically.

How to use the playstation 4’s dualshock 4 controller on a mac

To switch between profiles, you can just click on the menu bar icon and select the profile you want to use.

How to use the playstation 4’s dualshock 4 controller on a mac

Each button and analog stick axis has to be assigned individually. With Enjoyable open, press the button you want to configure on the PS4 controller. The app will select the right option from the list (for example, the X button on the controller is Button 2 in the menu). Press the key you want to map that button to in the right pane. Now, when you press that button, your Mac will register it as that keypress.

Repeat this process for the rest of the buttons. Note, the L2 and R2 buttons are actually registered as joysticks: L2 is Axis 5 and R2 is Axis 6. A half press on either is the Low axis while a full press is the High. This means you can assign two different key presses to the shoulder buttons if you want to. If not, make sure both axes are assigned the same key.

For the analog sticks, things can be a little confusing. The axes are:

  • Axis 1 Low: Left analog stick left.
  • Axis 1 High: Left analog stick right.
  • Axis 2 Low: Left analog stick up.
  • Axis 2 High: Left analog stick down.
  • Axis 3 Low: Right analog stick left.
  • Axis 3 High: Right analog stick right.
  • Axis 4 Low: Right analog stick up.
  • Axis 4 High: Right analog stick down.

Select the axis you want to configure and either assign them a directional button or a mouse movement.

How to use the playstation 4’s dualshock 4 controller on a mac

Once you’ve assigned every button, you’re ready to start gaming.

With a ton of great games available on for Mac, there’s never been a better time to start gaming on your favorite Apple computer. If you’re like me though, control games with your keyboard and mouse don’t feel very natural — I prefer a good controller.

While there are a few great controllers out there, if you have a DualShock 4 from your PlayStation 4, you can pair it with your Mac no problem! Here’s how you connect a PlayStation DualShock 4 controller to your Mac.

Here’s how to use a PS4 controller on Steam

How to use the playstation 4’s dualshock 4 controller on a mac

If you already own a PS4, it’s well worth knowing how to use a PS4 controller on Steam too.

Back in 2018, Valve officially introduced support for the PS4’s DualShock 4 pad to Steam — and it’s actually impressively customizable.

Not only will it just plug and play with gamepad supported games (with a little bit of work), but you can make it so that the touchpad controls your mouse — quite a trip in Windows — or that camera movements are done by tilts of the gamepad.

  • How to transfer your PS4 saves to PS5
  • How to take screenshots on Steam
  • How to benchmark your graphics card

However, learning how to use a PS4 controller on Steam isn’t quite as simple as plugging in an Xbox One pad and jumping into your game of choice — especially if you want to use it wirelessly.

But we’re here to help, so here’s our guide for how to use a PS4 controller on Steam.

1. Connect your DualShock 4 controller

If you’re happy using it wired, just connect a microUSB lead from the pad to your PC and then proceed to Step 10.

2. Check your PC has Bluetooth

If you want to use your DualShock 4 controller wirelessly with Steam, there are a few additional steps. First of all, make sure your PC has Bluetooth. If it doesn’t, Sony sells an official DualShock 4 USB adapter, though it’s pretty hard to find nowadays. Fortunately, any old dongle that supports Bluetooth 2.0 and above should suffice.

3. Press the Start button, then Settings

In Windows, press the Start button, and then press Settings.

4. Press Devices

From the next set of options, select Devices.

5. Switch on Bluetooth, then Add Bluetooth device

Ensure Bluetooth is switched on, and then press Add Bluetooth or other device.

6. Select Bluetooth

Simply choose the top option on this menu.

7. Pair PS4 controller

Now take your PS4 DualShock 4 controller and hold down the PS button (the one between the two analogue sticks) and the Share button (the one above and to the right of the D pad). When the light bar on the controller starts flashing, it’s ready to be discovered by your computer.

8. Select Wireless Controller

Back on Windows, the PS4 pad will now show up in the list of devices ready to be paired. It’ll be called the very generic “Wireless Controller”, so when that shows up, click it.

9. Look for ‘Device ready’ message

If all goes well, you’ll see this. Success!

10. Go to Steam settings

Log into Steam. Press the Steam menu in the top-left hand corner, and then press Settings.

11. Select Controller in Steam

In the submenu that appears press Controller, and then General Controller Settings.

12. Tick PlayStation Configuration Support

Tick the box that says “PlayStation Configuration Support” to set it up for the final stage of the process.

13. Customize your PS4 controller for Steam

Your PS4 pad is now ready to use in Steam, but to really supercharge it, return to the previous menu and play around with both Big Picture Configuration and Desktop Configuration. This will let you customize your controller in some really interesting ways both in game and generally when using Steam.

In addition to remapping every button and adjusting the sensitivity of the thumbsticks, you can also take advantage of the controller’s unique touchpad and gyroscope in a myriad of ways.

Want the DualShock 4’s touchpad to behave like a mouse? Go for it. How about controlling the in-game camera by simply moving the controller? You can make that happen. If you like tweaking every possible parameter when setting up your controls for games, Steam’s DualShock 4 features could keep you busy for hours.

How to use the playstation 4’s dualshock 4 controller on a mac

The PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One are both on predictably slow starts, with few major titles slated to be released until later this year. That doesn’t change the fact that the DualShock 4, the PS4’s bundled controller, is one of the finest gamepads I’ve handled. It’s comfortable and solidly built and with analog sticks and triggers that feel just right. Unfortunately, you can only use it with the PlayStation 4 console. Well, officially.

Users InhexSTER and electrobrains on the PCSX2 forums have been working in tandem on a program called DS4Tool that lets you connect your DualShock 4 to your PC. That means you can enjoy DualShock 4 goodness with classic, retro, last-gen, and cross-platform titles available on Steam, GOG.com, and other services. The library of titles you can play on the controller has opened up. InhexSTER adapted code from the DualShock 3 Scp Tool, an open-source driver for connecting the DualShock 3 controller to a PC (though we still recommend using MotioninJoy instead if you want to use the last-generation PlayStation gamepad), and he and electrobrains have been hacking away at it to fix bugs and improve performance.

The program is a wrapper that modifies the DualShock 4’s inputs into the XInput format Windows can register as an Xbox 360 controller. It’s surprisingly simple to set up and run, but since it’s an ongoing fan project you should be prepared for bugs or instability.

Step One: Install the Xbox 360 Wireless Controller Driver for Windows

Step Two: Download and Extract DS4Tool

How to use the playstation 4’s dualshock 4 controller on a mac

Step Three: Install the Virtual Bus Driver

Step Four: Connect Your DualShock 4

If you want to use Bluetooth, you need to put the DualShock 4 into pairing mode. First, if you have a PlayStation 4 and your controller is connected to it, turn off both the game console and controller. Then hold down the Share button and press the PlayStation button until the light bar flashes. Release the buttons and add the DualShock 4 to Windows like any Bluetooth device through the Add Device menu. It should show up as wireless controller.

How to use the playstation 4’s dualshock 4 controller on a mac

Step Five: Run DS4Tool

How to use the playstation 4’s dualshock 4 controller on a mac

Explore the DS4Tool software to figure out the best way to use it. You can enable the touchpad by holding the L2 and R2 buttons and pressing the touchpad. This lets you control the on-screen cursor (in this case, the mouse pointer) with the pad. Again, this is something you can’t do with the PlayStation 4. When the touchpad is enabled, L1 left clicks and L2 right clicks, and you can disable the touchpad by holding L1 and clicking the pad.

What if I Use a Mac?
There’s good news and bad news. The good news is connecting a DualShock 4 to your Mac is much, much simpler than connecting it to your PC. The bad news is compatibility is much, much more limited, and you’ll likely find yourself tweaking controls and trying to get it to work more than you would with a PC that thinks it’s an Xbox 360 controller. Simply plug the controller into a USB port and your Mac will detect it as a gamepad. If you want to use Bluetooth, hold down the Share button and press the PlayStation button on the gamepad until the light bar flashes, then pair it in your Mac’s Bluetooth menu. Be aware that the Bluetooth connection’s compatibility and reliability is lower than with the USB connection. After that, experiment to see which games work with the gamepad and what settings you need to tweak. A good starting point is to enter Steam’s Big Picture mode, select the Settings icon on the top right, and select the Controller button to play with how it works.

How to use the playstation 4’s dualshock 4 controller on a mac

Some PC gamers might smirk at the idea of using a controller to play their games rather than a mouse and keyboard, but we’d argue that there are a lot of games that work far better with this configuration.

If you’re looking to use a controller, then the PS4’s DualShock 4 is a great choice. Its button layout includes all the buttons that most controller-based PC games are made for, and you can even use its trackpad as a mouse input.

The only downside is that the controller’s audio jack isn’t currently supported, meaning you’ll have to plug your headphones directly into your computer if you want to use them.

  • Need a cheap controller? Here are the best DualShock 4 deals.

You don’t even need a PS4 to experience the DualShock 4 – all you need is the controller, a Windows PC and and a USB cable. You used to need to use specialist software to use the DualShock 4 on a PC, but Sony has now made it even easier to connect the DualShock 4 to your PC and get it running.

You can also use the PS4 controller wirelessly with your PC via Bluetooth. You’ll either need a PC that has Bluetooth built in (as many modern laptops do), or you can buy a separate Sony PlayStation 4 DualShock USB Wireless Adaptor dongle that plugs into your PC’s USB port. Sony produces an official version, but any Bluetooth adapter that supports Bluetooth 2 and above should work.

How to use the PS4 DualShock controller in Steam

Steam, the popular storefront and game launcher, has released a new update that allows you to use the PS4 DualShock controller on your PC when running the application.

Although the PS4 DualShock 4 support is in beta, it still makes it easy for you to plug in the controller and control your PC games. You can control the TV-friendly Big Picture Mode of Steam using the DualShock 4, and games will now show PS4 button prompts in game.

To use the PS4 DualShock controller on your PC in Steam, load up Steam and check for updates, then once the latest update has installed, plug in your DualShock 4 (or connect via Bluetooth) and you’ll be good to go!

To find out how to use a PS4 DualShock controller on your PC without using Steam, read on below.

How to use the PS4 controller on PC

How to use the playstation 4’s dualshock 4 controller on a mac

1. Download DS4Windows

While using the PS4 DualShock 4 controller on your PC is pretty simple, it’s not quite plug-and-play, as you’ll need to install an additional piece of software to get it working on your PC.

The software is called DS4Windows, and it makes connecting the PS4 controller to your PC incredibly simple. It basically fools your PC into thinking the connected DualShock 4 is an Xbox 360 controller, which is supported in Windows.

To get it from the DS4Windows website just click the Download Now button.

How to use the playstation 4’s dualshock 4 controller on a mac

2. Install DS4Windows

Locate the downloaded DS4Windows.zip file, right-click on it and select ‘Extract All…’

A window will appear asking you where you want to extract the files to. You can either choose to extract them to the folder to which you downloaded the zip file, or choose another folder.

Once the files have been extracted the destination folder will open, and you’ll see two files. One, DS4Updater.exe, is a program that will keep the DS4Windows program updated with the latest drivers, so it’s worth running this file if you encounter problems later.

Double-click the second file, DS4Windows.exe, to begin the setup procedure that will get the PS4 Dualshock Controller working on your PC.

3. Set up DS4Windows

When you launch DS4Windows for the first time you’ll be asked where you want your settings and profiles to be saved – we’d recommend using the default selection of ‘Appdata’.

A new window will open. Click ‘Install the DS4 Driver’ to enable you to use the PS4 DualShock controller in Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10.

If you have Windows 7 or older then you’ll need to click on ‘Install 360 Driver’ as well.

4. Connect the PS4 controller to your PC via USB

Now you’ll be able to connect your PS4 DualShock 4 controller to your PC. You can do this in two ways – either via a USB cable or via Bluetooth.

To connect the PS4 DualShock controller to your PC via a USB cable you just need a regular micro USB cable – the same one that comes with many modern smartphones.

Once you’ve plugged the cable into both the DualShock controller and your PC, Windows should detect it, and you’ll be ready to play PC games using the PS4 controller.

How to use the playstation 4’s dualshock 4 controller on a mac

5. Connect the PS4 controller to your PC via Bluetooth

One of the best things about using the PS4 DualShock 4 controller on your PC is that you can use it wirelessly, giving you far more flexibility when gaming.

The PS4 DualShock 4 controller uses Bluetooth, so you’ll need to make sure your PC or laptop has a Bluetooth receiver built in. If it doesn’t, you can buy a Bluetooth USB dongle such as the Tiny USB 2.0 Bluetooth Mini Wireless Adapter; not only is this small enough to be plugged unobtrusively into your PC, it’s also pretty cheap at just £2.99 (around US$4.55, AU$6.40).

How to use the playstation 4’s dualshock 4 controller on a mac

To connect the PS4 controller via Bluetooth, press and hold the central PS Button and the Share button for three seconds until the lightbar at the top of the controller begins to flash.

Next open up the Bluetooth settings on your PC. In Windows 10, click on the speech bubble icon in the Taskbar at the bottom-right corner of your screen. This opens up the Action Center – from there click ‘Bluetooth’ and then select ‘Wireless Controller’.

You may be asked to enter a pair code – if so type in 0000. The PS4 DualShock controller will now be connected wirelessly to your PC.
