How to watch live tv on your apple tv

If you want to watch live TV on your Apple TV—cable or antenna—it’s relatively easy to set up and get going.

The great thing about streaming set-top boxes is that almost everything you need for watching content is available in one place…except for live television. You can download a network’s respective app to watch a live stream of their channel, but you usually need a cable subscription in order to do that, which negates the whole point of cord cutting in the first place.

Thanks to the Apple TV and an app called Channels, however, you can get Live TV—complete with a cable-esque episode guide—right in the same interface as all your streaming apps.

What You Need

For this process, you’ll need an HDHomerun (a device we’ve covered before in the past) along with a TV antenna (for free over-the-air TV from networks like NBC, ABC, CBS, etc.) or your cable box (which will offer you many more channels like ESPN, TBS, and so on).

Of course, you can watch live TV without the HDHomerun—using your antenna or cable provider—but it requires constantly switching between inputs on your TV every time you want to watch television. If you want to hook it into the Apple TV, you’ll need the HDHomerun.

The HDHomerun is an external TV tuner that connects to your home network. From there, you can watch live television from any device in your house, so long as it’s connected to the network and the device has an app that can pick up live TV from a tuner.

How to watch live tv on your apple tv

There are three versions of the HDHomerun: the Connect ($110), Extend ($180), and Prime ($135). The Prime supports cable boxes (and only cable boxes), while the other two are designed for over-the-air TV antennae.

The Connect and Extend are very similar, except the Connect model requires an 802.11ac router in order to watch live TV over Wi-Fi, while the Extend only requires an 802.11n router. Most newer routers today use 802.11ac anyway, so feel free to go with the Connect if your router supports 802.11ac. It’s cheaper than the Extend, which is nice (although the Extend comes with a newer, fanless design).

Step One: Hook Up Your HDHomerun

To install the HDHomerun, you’ll need the device, its power cord, an ethernet cable (included), and a TV antenna or cable box. I’m using the Mohu Leaf antenna for this guide.

NOTE: If you have cable, you’ll almost certainly need to contact your cable provider and have them install a CableCARD in your HDHomerun as well, since the vast majority of cable channels are encrypted.

Once you have everything you need, just plug the HDHomerun into power, connect the TV antenna or cable box to the device’s coaxial jack, and use the ethernet cable to connect the HDHomerun to an empty ethernet port on your router. From there, the device will automatically boot up and be ready to go.

Step Two: Install the Channels App

Next, install the Channels app on your Apple TV. You can also download it to your iPhone or iPad. The Apple TV version costs $25 ($15 for the iOS version), which makes it one of the most expensive apps in the App Store. But considering the app also gives you a cable-like TV guide on the screen, the cost is definitely worth it.

How to watch live tv on your apple tv

After downloading and installing the app on your Apple TV, open it up and it will automatically recognize your HDHomerun on your network. You can confirm this by selecting “Settings” at the top.

How to watch live tv on your apple tv

From there, your HDHomerun tuner will appear on the screen, along with a list of channels that your antenna grabbed.

How to Use the Channels App

Overall, the Channels app is pretty basic, but that’s a good thing. At the top, you can either choose “On Now” or “Guide”. “On Now” will show you what’s playing on television right now and display it all with large thumbnails (pictured further above).

Choosing “Guide” will give you a familiar interface where you can browse what’s on TV now, as well as see what’s airing later on.

How to watch live tv on your apple tv

When you select something to watch, you’ll be taken to that channel immediately. You’ll also see a scrub bar at the bottom that tells you what the TV show is, as well as what’s airing afterward off to the right.

How to watch live tv on your apple tv

Channels lets you pause and rewind live television, and there’s even a DVR function that lets you record whatever you want so that you can watch it later. However, the DVR feature is currently still in beta, and costs $8 per month.

Remember that the HDHomerun works with any device, as long as you can get an app for it that lets you watch live TV through a tuner. That means you can use it with not just Channels, but VLC, Kodi, and even HDHomerun’s own app that you can get for Windows or Mac.

How to watch live tv on your apple tv

We recently purchased a home and decided that we were going to cut cable entirely. This was a pretty big deal (mostly for me) since I luvs watching me some meaningless dribble from time-to-time. The wife didn’t really mind as long as she could still watch The Bachelor. So it was decided: no cable television, and we would solely rely on what we could find on Hulu or any other subscription service.

Then we started to realize that not all shows are online, and even the ones that are wouldn’t be available until days later when the network would upload the show to a streaming service. And, well, that just wouldn’t do. So off I went on a crusade to figure out how to get FREE over-the-air (a.k.a. O.T.A. smh tmi? idk idc…) television.

Being an admitted Apple fanboy, I really wanted to get the live television to work through the newest Apple TV (4th Generation). Since the newest Apple TV allows apps to be installed, the hunt for a solution to free TV on the Apple TV started there.

Things Needed for Free Live TV on Apple TV

Channels ($15)

How to watch live tv on your apple tv

I came across this app on the Apple TV and thought this was the solution I had been hoping for. At a measly $15, I could buy the app one time and have free television for life! Wrong. This app is just the start, but it is an essential component to getting free tv on the Apple TV.

HDHomeRun Extend ($169)

What HDHomeRun has done is taken a normal television signal, be it cable television signal or O.T.A. signal, and broadcasts that signal over your home wifi. It’s pretty awesome. They have a few different versions, but the best solution I found for the Apple TV at least was the HDHomeRun Extend, which allows for two channels to be viewed (or recorded, more on that later) at a time on your wireless network. This includes the ability to watch television on not only your Apple TV, but also many other compatible devices including iPhones and iPads. Slick.

  • How to watch live tv on your apple tv
  • How to watch live tv on your apple tv

But alas, I still don’t have any free television coming into my house. Next up, the antenna.

ClearStream Antenna from Antennas Direct ($35-$100)

How to watch live tv on your apple tv

When looking for an antenna you’ll want to first visit this website (or similar sites) to see how far away you are from the nearest broadcast tower. In my case here in Las Vegas, I was about as far away from the towers as possible (being 30+ miles). I took my chances with a powered antenna from Walmart that allowed me to receive a few of the channels, but the quality was really choppy. I looked on Amazon and found this ClearStream antenna and it had rave reviews, so I purchased that one thinking it would solve all my troubles.

Nope, it didn’t. Turns out I ordered an antenna that only received UHF channels when half of the networks were broadcast on the VHF spectrum. Waa waa. Well, this is where I got smart. I actually picked up the phone and called the lovely people at Antennas Direct. The woman who answered the phone was incredibly helpful, looked up my address, and told me the exact antenna I needed to purchase. I recommend you do the same, here’s the number: 877-825-5572. I know, who calls people these days? I’m with you. But the experience was so pleasant and quick, it’s worth the countless hours you’ll spend trying to figure it out otherwise. She even told me where I could pick one up locally, which I did that same day from Best Buy. For my situation, the ClearStream™ 2V Long Range Indoor/Outdoor HDTV Antenna was the best solution.

Installing the antenna is probably going to be the trickiest part about all of this. You will have to install it somewhere with a pretty good line of sight towards the location of the broadcast towers. I installed mine in the attic. Most costly part was the time it took to do it, but it wasn’t hard to do. THEN you have to run a coaxial cable from the antenna to your HDHomeRun box. Luckily mine was pretty much directly below where I installed the antenna. I imagine running that cable could be the most annoying part for most people. Be creative. Maybe run the cable outside like the Satellite companies do then run it back into your house at the room you need it in. Just an idea. (Disclaimer: I’m not an electrician nor cable-runner guy. I have very little idea on how running that cable works logistically with laws and ordinances in ANY jurisdiction… so… good luck.)

Can I record Free O.T.A. Television on the Apple TV?

Well this is the next hurdle to solve. HDHomeRun is currently in an “early access” phase with their DVR component to the system, which if you order it now you get a discount on the device. I’m still waiting for that component to arrive, but once it does I’ll update how it works here. And I’ve already confirmed with the Channels App guys that the DVR will be supported with their app once it is out of this “early access” phase:

@neonbrand Yes we plan on it, see the FAQ on our website.

Cost of Free TV on Apple TV

But wait, how does “Free” TV actually cost money? Well as you can see above, you’re going to have to spend anywhere from $150 to $300 to get up and running with your “Free” broadcast television. But if I’m doing my math right, that’s the cost of approximately 2 months of DirecTV or Dish Network services, so after that you’re in the green! I’d say it definitely pays off.

Is there a monthly charge for Free TV on the Apple TV?

Now come on, I already tricked you once with saying it was free… This one is for reals. No monthly fee for this type of connection. There are definitely other ways to watch live television without (slingbox is an example), but we’re not talking about those here… ain’t nobody got time for that.

Once you buy the equipment listed here, you’ll be good to go into the foreseeable future. In summary, you’re shopping list:

  • Channels App
  • HDHomeRun Extend (available at Fry’s)
  • ClearStream antenna
  • About 5 hours of setup and configuration (it’s a great Saturday project)
  • You can watch live TV on your Apple TV by downloading a streaming app that supports it.
  • To watch live TV on an Apple TV, you’ll need to be using an Apple TV HD or Apple TV 4K model.
  • Some apps that allow you to watch live TV on an Apple TV device include Hulu, YouTube TV, and Sling.
  • Visit Business Insider’s homepage for more stories.

When the Apple TV first debuted, you couldn’t use it to watch live TV. But as the years have gone on, more and more apps have been released that give you the capability.

Nowadays, there are several apps that allow you to stream live TV. Here’s a guide to some of the most popular options.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Apple TV 4K (From $US179.99 at Best Buy)

How to watch live TV on an Apple TV

If you want to stream live TV, you can use a premium multi-channel service, or download apps for specific channels.

fuboTV

fuboTV is a streaming service best known for its sport channels.

While it also carries local and basic cable networks, totalling more than 100 channels, its entry-level package boasts at least three to four times as many sports channels as its competitors.

The main sports channel that fuboTV is missing, however, is ESPN.

fuboTV starts at $US54.99 a month, which also includes 30 hours of DVR storage.

Hulu + Live TV

Hulu + Live TV has over 60 channels in its base package, along with a packed streaming library that includes original and syndicated shows and movies.

You can also add other premium channels, including HBO and Showtime, for a small price increase.

YouTube TV

YouTube TV has more channels than Hulu, but less than fubo.

With YouTube TV, you can have three streams going at once, while most competitors only allow two. You also get access to YouTube’s original content on its YouTube Red channel.

YouTube TV starts at $US49.99 a month.

Sling TV

Sling TV has the lowest-priced base package, but it consists mostly of basic cable offerings without local channels. The other main competitors include local channels. You can add local networks with a more expensive package, however.

AT&T TV Now

At the moment, AT&T TV Now is the priciest of the bunch. It’s developing a larger library of on-demand content, however, which may end up being larger than the others.

AT&T Now starts at $US65 a month, which includes HBO and more than 45 channels.

What to Know

  • Easiest way: Use a Lightning Digital AV Adapter with an HDMI cable to connect your iOS device to your TV.
  • Use Chromecast: Open a Chromecast-compatible app and select the cast button.
  • Other options: Stream with an Apple TV or use a DLNA-compatible app with a smart TV that supports DLNA.

This article explains four ways to enable streaming on your iPad or iPhone so you can see your device’s content on a television screen. Instructions include connecting your device to the TV using an Apple Lightning Digital AV Adapter with an HDMI cable, using Chromecast and Chromecast-compatible apps, streaming with your Apple TV, and using a DLNA-compatible app with a smart TV that supports DLNA.

Stream to the TV With Cables & Adapters

Possibly the easiest way to stream from iPad or iPhone is to connect a cable, but you can’t use just any cable. Because iOS devices use Apple’s proprietary Lightning connector, you need a special adapter.

Apple’s Lightning Digital AV Adapter (usually around $50 from Apple.com) is the first half of what you need to stream to your TV. The other half is an HDMI cable for connecting the adapter to the TV.

How to watch live tv on your apple tv

Once you switch the input on your TV to the HDMI port the cable is plugged into, you’ll see your iPad or iPhone on the TV. From there, you can stream apps, photos, videos, and more straight to your TV.

Use Chromecast to Stream With iPad or iPhone

Apple isn’t the only company that offers a streaming device for iPhone and iPad. There’s also the Chromecast from Google that’s similar but works wirelessly.

Chromecast works much differently than the adapter in that not everything on the screen can be streamed to the TV. Streaming is app-specific, meaning that you must have an app that supports Chromecast to see the content on the TV.

How to watch live tv on your apple tv

While there are lots of apps that support Chromecast, you’re limited in that you can’t stream your iPad or iPhone home screen, nor can you open just any app and stream the whole thing to your TV. You need extra software to make AirPlay work with Chromecast.

Make sure the Chromecast and iOS device are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

This is the easiest way to connect them together, though there are ways to use Chromecast without Wi-Fi.

Open a Chromecast-compatible app.

Some examples include Netflix, YouTube, Google Photos, and Hulu, but there are many others, including games, movie apps, sports apps, etc.

Select the cast button (a square merged with a Wi-Fi icon).

If asked, select the correct Chromecast from the list that you want to stream your iPad or iPhone to.

Stream With Apple TV

If you like to keep all your devices centered around the Apple brand, but you want to stream to the TV wirelessly, check out the Apple TV.

Apple’s set-top box can do lots of things: stream Netflix, HBO, or more; play games from the App Store; deliver music from Apple Music; and serve as a hub for HomeKit-compatible smart home devices. Of course, it also lets you stream content to the TV from your iPad or iPhone.

How to watch live tv on your apple tv

All iOS devices and the Apple TV support AirPlay, an Apple technology for wirelessly streaming audio and video between compatible devices. In this case, use AirPlay Mirroring, which lets you stream your device’s screen to your TV.

Make sure both the Apple TV and your iOS device are connected to the same Wi-Fi network, and then connect to the Apple TV through Control Center.

When you want to stop streaming from your iPhone or iPad, open Control Center, tap Apple TV, and then choose Stop Mirroring.

Stream iPad or iPhone to the TV Using DLNA

You don’t always need to buy extra hardware to stream your iPad or iPhone to your TV. If you’ve got a smart TV that supports DLNA, all you need is a compatible app.

Not all apps work the same way, but the specific instructions for using the app with your TV should be included in the app or on the developer’s website.

If your TV supports DLNA, install a compatible app on your iPhone or iPad, add content to it, and then use it to stream to a TV on the same Wi-Fi network as your iOS device.

Some protected content, such as videos from the iTunes Store, might not be playable using these apps because they don’t support DRM.
