Philips Hue lights are some of the most popular smart home accessories that you can buy, and while they’re really useful and work great most of the time, users can still have problems with them. Here are five common Philips Hue problems and how to fix them.
There are a lot of options out on the market when it comes to smart lighting, and it seems all of the smart home companies want to get in on the action. However, Philips Hue has been the gold standard for a while, and if you’re thinking about getting some smart lights, it’s likely that Philips Hue is the brand you’re going for.
With Philips Hue, you can control your lights from your smartphone, as well as change the colors of the bulbs. You can even set alarms and timers, as well as create a schedule for your lights to automatically turn on and off. You can also set up geofencing so that your lights automatically turn on when you get home and turn off when you leave the house.
However, no product is complete with its occasional problems, and the Philips Hue system has some unique problems of its own that are fairly common to come across.
Here are five common Philips Hue problems and how to fix them.
Bridge Already Paired Error
After you set up your Philips Hue system, you’ll still need to pair the Hue Bridge with HomeKit in order to use Siri. However, if you go to pair it up, you might get a pop that says something along the lines of “Another user already paired the HomeKit enabled bridge. Please ask the user to share his/her HomeKit settings in order for you to start using Siri voice control.”
You likely know this is an error because no one else has paired the Bridge with their iPhone. The good news is that there’s an easy fix.
Simply open up the Settings app on our iPhone tap on Privacy and then select HomeKit. From there, select Reset HomeKit Configuration and then tap Reset Configuration to confirm.
From there, go back into the Philips Hue app and pair the Bridge with HomeKit. It should work that time around. Unfortunately, you’ll have to re-pair your other HomeKit products again.
Siri Not Working
Sometimes after you set up HomeKit, Siri will just stop working randomly.
If you go into the Philips Hue app and then navigate to Settings > Siri Voice Control, you’ll notice that your Bridge disconnected from HomeKit and that you need to re-pair it. This is a bit different than the problem above, since you won’t get the pop-up when attempting to pair it again.
This was happening to me and I learned the hard way that if you remove the Hue Bridge from within another HomeKit-enabled app, it will completely unpair the Bridge from HomeKit and you’ll need to re-pair it.
“iCloud Data Sync in Progress”
Another issue that you might have with Philips Hue when you go to set it up with HomeKit is that you’ll get a message that says “iCloud Data sync in progress,” telling you to try again in a few minutes, but trying it again gives you the same message.
The only way to really fix this is to sign out of your iCloud account by going into Settings > iCloud and selecting Sign Out at the bottom and then sign back in. It will delete your iCloud info, but it’s pretty easy to get back once you sign back in.
Lights Marked as Unreachable
If you go into the Philips Hue app and you notice that some of your Hue bulbs are marked as “unreachable,” it could be because of a couple of things.
First, if your lights are controlled by a light switch on the wall, make sure that the switch is on. It’s likely that you already know this, but sometimes you can mistakingly flip the switch off and not even realize it.
Also make sure that your Hue Bridge is close enough to all of your lights that they can get a signal from the Bridge. However, since Hue bulbs can receive signals from one another, your Bridge doesn’t have to be close to every bulb, but if you have a Hue bulb that’s further away than the others and it’s not getting a signal, that’s likely your problem.
This isn’t necessarily a “problem” per se, but it’s perhaps a big reason why some users may not have bought into Philips Hue yet.
Hue bulbs are expensive. The starter kit alone is $200, and only comes with three color bulbs. However, there are ways that you can save a bit of money and ease your way into the Hue ecosystem.
For example, Philips makes a white-only starter kit for $80 that comes with the Bridge and two Hue White bulbs, which can be good enough for your living room or bedroom. From there, you can add more Hue White bulbs to your setup for just $15 per bulb, which is really cheap for connected smart bulbs.

It’s not the best-looking app by any means, and if anything, it’s kind of ugly, but it’s really simple to use. I found it to be the best management app for my Philips Hue lights by far.
You can turn on and off individual lights or group them together and control them that way. You can also easily dim lights by sliding horizontally across the light bar that highlights the bulb or group. Plus, tapping on a light or a group will bring up the color selector.
Smart bulbs are supposed to give you that advanced control over your lighting without consuming as much power. Many brands claim that their smart blubs consume up to 75 percent less energy as compared to our traditional bulbs. Then you might ask why does not everyone buy these bulbs.
The answer is they can be quite expensive. People are reluctant to pay such an amount even though it will save them money in the form of an electricity bill. Not to mention the increased utility you get while using these bulbs.
Common Philips Hue Light Problems Troubleshooting
Philips makes very reliable products with a lasting life span. Their customer base is extremely satisfied overall but some customers have faced issues. From setting up the hue lights to getting them connected to the hue bridge. Here is a list of some common problems you might face and also their solutions.
1. Hue Bridge not found
A hue bridge acts like a central hub through which you can control your lighting. It gives you the ability to remotely access your lights. Philips includes a hue bridge along with their package but you might need to buy one separately if you didn’t get one. Some people are experiencing issues with the hue bridge not showing on the mobile app.
To fix this make sure the Hue bridge is connected to a stable internet connection. You can connect it to your internet device through ethernet. Another fix is that make sure you and the hue bridge are connected to the same network. If this does not work then try restarting the Hue device you can do so by unplugging the power for sixty seconds and then replugging it. After it has restarted it should start showing up on your Hue app.
2. App Can’t Connect To Bulbs
Another common problem is that people often find a bulb that they have already paired with the hue bridge unreachable. You’re not able to turn it on or off anymore.
It is pretty easy to fix this issue, the most probable cause is that the hue bridge is out of range. Meaning that someone moved the hue bridge after you had paired your bulb. If the hue bridge is out of the effective range then it cannot connect to the bulbs anymore. This is why it shows the bulb as unreachable. Make sure that your hue bridge is within the range of the bulb and that should sort out this issue.
3. You Are Not Able To Add New Bulbs
After buying new smart bulbs people often have difficulty setting them up. They are not able to get the new bulbs added to the Hue app. Here are some possible fixes you can try.
Make sure power is connected to the Philips hue bulb, they only work when they are receiving a stable flow of power. You can also add the bulbs manually through the Hue app. For this, you will have to add the serial number of the bulb into the app. You can find the serial number on the base of the bulb. When you enter the six-digit serial number into the app, it will connect to the bulb manually and it will start showing up in the app.
4. Bridge Already Paired Error
It is a pretty common issue that people face when they try the hue bridge to connect to the Siri home kit. You receive the error that another user has already paired with the home kit. Here is how you can solve this.
The best way to solve this issue is by resetting the home kit reconfiguration in your settings. However, this might mean that you would have to re-pair any other device you have connected to the home kit which might prove to be a headache. But doing this fixed the problem for most customers so make sure to give it a try.
All these are pretty common Philips Hue Light Problems which you can now resolve by following the mentioned fixes. Reset a Philips Hue bulb
If you’re dealing with a single Philips Hue bulb or standalone lamp, and you want to reset this on its own, you need to go through the Hue app for Android or iOS — which is most likely how you set up the bulb in the first place.
From the main screen of the app, tap the menu button (three dots, top right), and choose Light setup. Select the “i” icon next to the bulb or light you want to reset, then tap Delete. The device gets forgotten by the app, and is ready to be added again or used in a completely different system.
If you’re not using the Hue Bridge and Hue app, check inside the app you are using. For example, Hue bulbs can be removed from an Echo Plus and reset by tapping on Devices in the Alexa app; choose the room group, then the bulb, then the settings cog (top-right), then the trash icon (top-right again).
Bulbs can also be reset if you have an official Philips Hue Dimmer Switch at home. With the light in question powered on, hold the Dimmer Switch close to it and hold down the On and Off buttons together for 10 seconds or so. When the light blinks and then stops blinking, the bulb is reset.
Reset a Philips Hue Bridge
For a more comprehensive reset, you can return your Hue Bridge to its factory settings – this will reset all the lamps and bulbs on your system at the same time. The Hue Bridge and any lights will then need to be set up again from scratch, the same way you did when you first bought them.
There’s not much to the process here: turn your Hue Bridge over and you should notice a Restore factory setting button. Hold this down for a few seconds and your entire system gets reset; you’re going to need a paperclip or some other small, thin object to poke down the hole next to the label.
Note that the official Philips Hue support documents only recommend resetting a system if you’re told to by a customer service advisor — it’s not something to do lightly. Depending on your setup, you may need to enter the serial numbers of your Hue bulbs to add them again after a reset.
Remember that resetting your Hue Bridge means all your lights and accessories are forgotten on the network. You’ll lose your preferences, light groupings, scenes, routines, widgets and so on. It really is a last-resort option.
Reconfigure your Philips Hue network
Whenever possible it’s best to try and avoid resetting your Philips Hue bulbs and the Philips Hue Bridge. Make sure you’ve explored all the other troubleshooting options available to do before deleting lights from the system or triggering the factory reset button on the Hue Bridge.
If you just want to reconfigure your bulbs or assign them to different rooms, for example, this can be easily done inside the Hue app. Tap through into a specific room, tap the menu button (three dots, top-right), and you can add new lights or rename the ones you’ve got.
Choose Edit room or move lights and the app lets you switch your lights around: bulbs and lamps can be added to or removed from the current room, and you can rename it too. If you’ve moved your Hue Go upstairs (or downstairs), this is the way to change your Hue setup without resetting anything.
The same goes for third-party apps and platforms, though you might need to check the official support documents for details. If you’ve added Philips Hue to a Google Home network, for instance, head into the Google Home app on your phone—tap through to a bulb, then tap the cog icon to unlink your Hue lights from the Google Home network.

Philips Hue lights are some of the best smart home lighting equipment out there, however like any piece of tech they are not without their faults.
Here, we will present some of the most common issues that you can come across while using Philips Hue lights and their solutions.
Please Note: The Philips Hue Starter Kit on Amazon comes with two bulbs and a bridge.
Issue #1 – The Hue Bridge Cannot Command Your Hue bulbs
It gets quite frustrating when your Philip Hue app is not allowing you to add lights. There are however a few steps you can take to solve this problem.
The lights on your bridge mean something, here they are:
- The first light means the bridge is receiving power.
- The second light means it is successfully connected to a network.
- The third light shows that your bridge has internet connectivity.
- The fourth light shows that the Hue app has control of the lights. If any of the light does not light, then you need to reconnect the bridge again.
Depending on which lights are not showing, you either have an issue with your power, internet connection or bulb communication.
To connect your Hue bridge to the Hue bulbs first ensure the bulbs are actually Hue bulbs. Hue bridge app can only find hue bulbs specifically and since other Philips products look just like the Hue bulbs check to make sure you are using the right ones.
Through the app, you can auto search or manual search for bulbs to add to the Hue Bridge. Sometimes the auto search function is inefficient so we recommend you use the manual search.
After finding the bulb on the app, you will need to insert the additional bulb(s) serial number and hit OK. You can add up to 50 to one bridge!
If the bulbs are still unreachable after a successful addition, check whether the bulbs are turned on. Also make sure the bulbs are near each other for them to receive signals from other bulbs and the Hue Bridge.
Issue #2 – Philips Hue Lights Unreachable
When you turn on one of the Philips Hue bulb without using the Philips Hue app or your Amazon Echo, there is a high chance that will cause connectivity issues. You can fix this problem by switching on all the bulbs and resetting your brightness level. If this fails to work:
a. Open the Philips Hue app,
b. Go to settings,
c. Tap on light setup
d. Search for the bulb/s that the app can’t control
e. Erase the bulb/s and add it again
If you are using the Amazon Echo, simply ask Alexa to turn off the lights and turn them back on.
Issue #3 – No Hue Connection
It’s almost impossible to avoid this kind of problem. If it happens, it is really likely that your lights have stopped communicating with the bridge.
You should check your internet connection by looking at light #4 on the Hue bridge and possibly restart your bridge. It also helps to manually turn the lights off and on again 🙂
Issue #4 – Flickering and Buzzing Bulbs
With flickering and buzzing bulbs the main culprit is usually a dimmer switch or a faulty bulb so you either need to check you dimmer switch for any defects or replace the bulb.
Issue #5 – Amazon Alexa and Philips Hue Connection Problems
If the Amazon Echo does not connect to your Philips Hue here is the solution:
a. Restart both the Philips Hue bridge and the Echo.
b. Disable and re-enable the Philips Hue skill using your Alexa app.
c. Use the Forget option in the Alexa app to disconnect your bridge from the Echo
and try to link them again.
Please Note: Make sure your Bridge and the Amazon Echo are connected to the same WiFi network. This is not necessary but it helps with the pairing.
Other Things To Consider
Ensure the group name assigned to your Philips Hue setup in the Alexa app is easily
understood by Alexa.
For example, if the group name is Tbler00m lights, rename it to table-room lights by opening the app on your smart phone and renaming it there. You can also create a better group name and add your device to the group.

Isn’t it brilliant being able to control your Hue lights with your voice? Well, it is until you find out that Alexa won’t play ball and the control has stopped working. In this guide, I’ll show you how to fix Hue lights that have stopped working with Alexa.
I’ll run through the most common fixes, for the most common errors, which include all lights not working, or just one bulb in particular that will not play ball. Once you’ve finished, you’ll have everything working properly again.
Power cycle the Hue Bridge
First, it’s worth checking that your Philips Hue Bridge has an internet connection. All three lights at the top of the Bridge should be on. In order, they are the power button, network connection button and internet connection button. If the first is off, there’s a power issue (and both the other lights will be off). If the second light is off, then it means that you have a problem with the connection to your router, so check the cabling (this will also mean that the third light is off). Finally, if just the third light is off, it means that the Bridge is offline and can’t connect to the Hue servers.
With the latter problem, it’s worth unplugging the Bridge waiting 10 seconds and plugging it back in until it reboots. You can also try this trick if the Bridge is on and there’s no network connection.
Disable (and re-enable) the Alexa skill
Sometimes the Alexa Skill can lose its connection to the Hue, and the easiest way to fix it is to remove and re-add. To do this, go to the Alexa app, tap More, Skills & Games, then tap Search. Enter Hue, and then tap Disable Skill. Then tap Enable To Use to reconnect the Skill, and log back in to your Hue account.
Fix Alexa Group issues
Alexa is a little strange in how it brings in lights from your Hue account. It shows each bulb individually, but it also brings in the Hue Room groupings. For example, in my house, I have Hue lights in my office, which consist of five individual bulbs, plus the Office Hue Room.
I’ve had issues where the Hue Room is not in the same group as the individual bulbs, which has meant that Alexa will fail (at random) to control one or more bulbs. Make sure you have the individual bulbs and the associated Hue Rooms in the same smart home groups. My guide on how to create Alexa smart home groups explains how you go about this.
Fix unresponsive lights
If you have only one light that won’t respond, it could be the result of a couple of issues. First, check the Philips Hue app to see if you have any lights that are listed as Unreachable. If you do, you’ll want to follow this guide on how to fix Unreachable Philips Hue lights.
If this doesn’t fix your problem, or you don’t have any Unreachable lights, then one method that often addresses grouping problems is to simply remove the glitchy light and re-add it.
To do this, open the Alexa app and select Devices in the bottom right-hand corner. Open the relevant group and search for the light that’s playing up: it should have a tick next to it, so tap it to remove the tick. Hit Save, then select the group again, tap on the light so that the tick appears and hit Save again.
Try asking Alexa to turn on the group and your missing light should now be back in action.
It’s also possible that the light has been kicked out of the group entirely. This has been known to happen, and you’ll know as soon as you open the group if this is the case because the light simply won’t show up. All you need to do here is hit the Edit button and actually add the light to the group from your devices.
Be careful of third-party tools
Things can get messy when you end up with duplicate lights in your Alexa set up. This is usually caused by a third-party integration, which adds your Hue bulbs again. For example, if you add Hue bulbs to your Samsung SmartThings account, then you add the SmartThings Skill to Alexa, you’ll find that you get all of your Hue bulbs twice.
Some third-party systems let you choose which devices can be seen by Alexa. In fact, SmartThings used to allow this, but since the company has changed apps and created a new Alexa Skill, this feature has been removed. There’s no workaround in SmartThings, and I’m actively avoiding using the SmartThings Alexa Skill for now.
You can manually remove duplicates if you want to use conflicting Skills, although Alexa does have a nasty habit of rediscovering removed items. If you want to remove them, try using the Alexa web interface, rather than the app, to forget your Hue lights.

These are part of your breastfeeding journey, but having clear answers to your breastfeeding questions can help put your mind at rest.
If your baby won’t latch, your nipples are cracked or if you’re experiencing overall breastfeeding pain, you’re not alone, and here you’ll find some tips and techniques to help you through. 5 common breastfeeding issues
1. ‘My baby won’t latch’
Latching can take a little time, but be gentle on yourself: you’ve both got this. Trouble latching is one of the most common breastfeeding problems, and it can be one of the reasons that breastfeeding hurts at times.
If your baby won’t latch, there are several problems that could arise as a result, which is why it is important to ask for help if you and your baby are struggling to achieve a good latch. Clues that your baby may not be latching correctly may include the following:
- Your nipples hurt during feedings
- Your baby is only latching to your nipple
- Your baby’s lips are tucked in
- You hear clicking or loud sucking sounds
- Your baby feels frustrated after attempting to feed
- Overtime, your milk supply is decreasing, even though you feed often
- Your baby is losing weight
Here are a few breastfeeding tips to keep in mind to help encourage your baby to latch properly:
Create a calm environment. The key to a comfortable feeding session is to be calm and relaxed. Lay in your bed with pillows or sit in a comfortable chair.
Cuddle your baby skin-to-skin. Place your baby on your bare chest between your breasts for relaxing skin-to-skin contact.
Don’t force the latch. Allow your baby to take the lead during nursing sessions. You will want to guide and support your newborn, but you certainly shouldn’t be forcing the latch.
Find a comfortable position. Sometimes the trick is knowing which positions work and which ones don’t. Explore the different breastfeeding positions that can help your baby to latch.
2. ‘My nipple hurts’
In the early days, it’s quite common to experience some tenderness on your nipples. But that doesn’t mean that you must bear the pain. Breastfeeding pain can be linked to multiple causes, from skin sensitivity to poor positioning. The following tips can help you manage the problem in the first few days:
Drain your milk. It is important that you fully drain your milk from your breasts during feedings. If you feel that you still have milk remaining, consider pumping to fully empty your breasts.
Getting into position. Ensure that your baby is latching properly during feeding sessions. Your entire nipple and most of your lower areola should be in your baby’s mouth.
If the pain persists, you should seek advice from your lactation consultant to quickly troubleshoot. Sometimes if problems persist too long, it can lead to breast problems such as lower milk supply or mastitis.
3. ‘My nipples are cracked’
Another common issue among mothers who choose to breastfeed is cracked nipples, often caused by a shallow latch. This is when your baby is not getting enough of the breast tissue in their mouth and sucks on your nipple instead, which can cause cracked or sore nipples. It should be dealt with promptly to avoid worsening the pain or causing infection.
Here are some of the best ways to soothe and protect your nipples so you’re able to comfortably breastfeed:
Place expressed breast milk on your nipples. That’s right, you can actually use your own breast milk to heal your cracked nipples. Simply apply a few drops of breast milk on your nipples and air dry.
Encourage milk flow before feeds. Applying warm compresses over the area and express some breast milk before you feed your baby will help stimulate milk flow.
Protect sore nipples with nipple protectors. And while you are healing your sore nipples, why not relieve some of the breast pain when breastfeeding with nipple protectors? These nipple shields can help to ease any nipple discomfort while nursing. Applying nipple cream after feeds also helps to soothe and moisturize the area.
Prevent chafing between feeds with breast shells. Protect your nipples from chafing on your clothes in between feeds with these breast shells. Simply wear them inside your bra to help prevent nipple irritation and to collect excess breast milk. You may also wish to consider using breast pads to keep your clothes stain-free from your breast milk.
Use a proper positioning technique. Often it is as simple as using a pillow to elevate your baby to your breast, or latching them in a different position to avoid sore or cracked nipples.
Try thermo pads before and after feeds. To soothe sore nipples use them cold after feeds.
Philips Hue has finally launched a new version of its application to control its various smart lighting solutions. The new app is better in practically everything thanks to a redesign that facilitates the control of the connected home and adds a series of new options with which some common problems are solved.

On more than one occasion we have told you about Philips Hue smart lighting products. Because they seem to us to be the best on the market, although the price is sometimes much higher than that of their direct rivals.
However, in the same way that we tell you that we like their products, we also recognize that the application needed some other changes. Because there were things that after so long did not quite add up, even less when compared to the Apple Home application or Google Home. And these are not perfect either, but visually they were easier to understand for the less advanced user.
Now the new Philips Hue app for iOS and Android attracts attention in the first place for its redesign. Version 4.0 looks much better and includes a series of new features that will especially appeal to those who have already advanced in terms of integrating this type of solution into their home and will facilitate the initiation of newcomers.
For starters, as you can see from the images, the user interface itself has been redesigned from the ground up. It is very similar to the Apple and Google applications as we said, so that everything is more visual and simple to control both the devices individually and by rooms or areas.
What’s more, in the new interface there is now a button enabled to edit all these areas and rooms in a much faster and easier way. Especially when making use of the settings for entertainment by being able to better control the position of the lights and their settings.
Another important novelty is that the use of the advantages offered by geolocation has been improved with something as simple as the detection of other users when the main user of the house leaves the place to avoid possible rules such as the automatic shutdown of all lights and other rules are not enforced.
